Justin Simon enters NBA Draft

Simon will get looks because he’s an elite defender and he’s athletic as hell. That being said the new coach will have to convince Simon he can make him a better shooter so he can fill in that three and D role the NBA covets.

I would expect our new coach to try to talk Justin into staying, but regardless of his final decision, he was a very valuable member of our team the last two years. Yes, he has offensive limitations, but was BE defensive player of the year for crying out loud and we sure don't beat Marquette or Hall without him. Plus he was just a great kid who always represented us well and never stopped playing his hardest even when it appeared he was one of the only ones doing so in the last few games.
He is entitled to pursue his dream and I wish him the best.

We all know damn well what causes it. Because half of you fans LIVE for this.
Pretty sure Mullin's poor record and nonexistent recruiting caused this.

Great kid and a super athlete, very quick with great hands .
Truly hope the new coach convinces him that he can remake Justin into a more complete basketball player whom the NBA might have an interest in.
Justin is on schedule to graduate this year. Is one additional year of playing in college going to really improve his draft status? I doubt it. So he is graduating and has decided not to use his last year of eligibility by taking graduate courses. That is all this is. Since he has a year left of eligibility, evidently you have to declare for the draft. He is doing what most college students do when they graduate and don't continue on for advance degrees, he is looking for a job.

Instead of bashing his decision, lets try something novel and wish him luck. He has his degree and represented us well.
Considering he doesn't actually have a draft status at this time, I'd say staying another year can definitely help. Staying in the gym, working on his shot and ball handling in the off season could do wonders for his senior year and his professional outlook.

Wow, that was quick!

Looks like Justin has already signed with an agent and is, therefore, gone.

Is that still the rule?
I thought that he could sign with an agent and if not drafted, could return to play out his college career?

Wow, I didn't see this one coming. I was expecting him to transfer.

I think the odds he'd get drafted are extremely low, so believe that means he could still come back if he goes undrafted. Of course, he might just opt for overseas.

Only if he was invited to the combine which he won’t be. He’s done now. His mind was made up before today.

Yes, my bad, new rules say the agent doesn't automatically result in forfeiture of eligibility.

Maybe he is doing this until he sees what is going on with SJU basketball. I think a good coach could improve Simon's game. He has the hustle and determination, but just is not good enough for the NBA. Maybe one year of college with the right coach will help his shot. Dom Pointer improved his game by a lot in his last year and improved his chances.

Maybe he let's this play out and this way, as it looks like his decision is from a position of strength rather than being backed into a corner. I hate what happens to a lot of these kids when coaches leave, especially seniors who have little option to transfer.

Is this true, can't return? Wow, definitely have to question this decision.

This was in the works. You don’t just sign with an agent that quickly. He’s heard presentations from several agencies and probably agreed before today. Trimble Simon and Clark all lived together so this was known and discussed by many fans through texts/pms/Facebook.

Justin Simon's father Ken said his son was going to test waters initially, but with Chris Mullin gone, made decision to go pro easy. Could've seen him coming back if Mullin was here.

Yeah it was made up to come back while going through the draft process. Obviously things change. No one wants to be part of a rebuild in their final season. Transferring was not something he was exploring either.

Is the combine on an invite basis only?
Because I think the rule says he has to ‘go through the combine’ and if not drafted can return to ‘school’.

Hate to see him go, but wish him the best. Not sure why he wouldn't have been better off waiting to see who new coach is and their plans for him before making a final decision. Maybe felt that leaving with the defensive player of the year honor fresh was better for him than coming back under uncertain circumstances.

Exactly, I don't understand the bashing. Some people on here are clueless. What he's essentially saying is he's going pro. What do you want him to say "I'm leaving the school to go to Europe?" That is essentially the case, but you've always got to put your name in the draft just in case.

Combine is invite only. I believe last year there were 69 invites. 7-9 of those invites are back this year so there will be about 60 new ones extended. Seniors will get the nod it’s close over those with eligibility remaining.

Simon’s college career is done. He won’t get an invite to the combine. There is a fraction of hope for Ponds if we hired a stud but I doubt he’s still taking classes.
