Josiah Turner - PG - SMU

Stupid rule. Let kids transfer whenever they want. If they were truly student athletes this wouldn't be an issue, because undergrads transfer whenever the heck they want.

FWIW for anyone who's a fan of college basketball that's ridiculous. Then again I'm old enough to cheer for the schools over the players.

Not sure what the age remark has to do with anything. Players have found a loophole in recent years. Never happened back in the good old days your used to. And now players I think are abusing this loophole. IMO NCAA opened Pandoras box when they started these exemptions. Now either they straighten the rules, go back to not allowing it, or open the gates. You can loosely tie in how coaches can come and go as they please but then you will say players should choose a college and not a coach but all ppl know that's a crock

Prior planning if Harrison decides to leave after next season?

I am president of the 3'Angelo fan club, but he doesn't have have the athletic ability to make the jump early as a combo guard. He looked incredibly slow against Pitt to end the year. If he leaves before his senior year, that will be a mistake.

I don't think that Lavin looking at Turner and Wood has anything to do with how long he thinks Harrison will be around. Carson is a point guard and Wood is currently a 2013 sg/sf. We only have four guards on the roster.

I'd really like to see Lav add this type of a talent, athough I think Turner will have some trouble dislodging Branch from the starting spot for 2013-2014.

Coming to a practice floor near you?

Per Zags, Turner has teamed up with current johnnies in the past, and is the reason for him considering

As a high school senior Rivals listed Turner as being 6'3" and 175 poinds.

Rivals ranked Turner as the #2 Point guard and #11 player in the class of 2011.

Rivals indicated that he selected Arizona over such heavyweight basketball schools as Kansas, Yukon, Louisville, UCLA, Oklahoma and Oregon.

.... pretty impressive stuff.

Back to Josiah Turner. He finished his senior year of high school at QEA feeding Sir Dominic Pointer the ball.... so there may be a reason for a mutual interest.

I know the stories are that he's trouble. But he's the 3nd top rated HS guard to bolt on Sean Miller in 2 years (Momo left after last season, as did Jordan Brand All America frosh Daniel Bejarano), and there was much discussion that if Turner didn't leave, soph PG Jordin Mayes WOULD have (and may still) - so maybe there's more to it than problems with the KIDs.....

He transferred from four high schools in four years, having at least one bad relationship with a coach. He was suspended by Miller two times.

We are courting a power center who has problems, but he's dramatically worth it. He an impact guy.

We are also looking at all sorts of transfer kids and there is a strong correlation between transferring and being unhappy and then continuing to be unhappy so one transfers again--- and the beat goes on !

Michael Chandler can be a difference maker, so that shot is worth taking. Let's hope that he is an isolated event.

When your list of hopefuls is riddled with checkered transfers, and borderline qualifiers, do you become a school that depends on rejects to have a successful program.

Is our basketball program in danger of becoming a school for unhappy boys . Are we, candidly speaking, turning in that direction to achieve a seemingly successful recruiting season but really one without substance and strength.

I think that we can do much better than that by toughing it out the conventional way. In the long run our reputation plus our coach will make us a huge success.

"school for unhappy boys?" I smell an analysis rooted in social darwinism in which the lesser party in an unequal power relationship somehow has stigmatizing flaws attributed to them.

I am torn on Josiah. I think a year ago signing him is a no brainer. I have to wonder how signing him now will affect the chemistry of this team. Branch is also a highly touted PG, though slightly less so than Turner was. How do you manage to keep everyone in the system right now on board? Neither of them is going to want to play 20 minutes a game and I can't picture trying to run the two of them and sitting Harrison who was our leading scorer last year. I like the idea of talent but I am not sure how i feel about how that talent mixes with what we already have, and I don't really want to lose any of the kids that we have. Does anyone see how this would work for us?

The key is Lavin's ability to get guys to buy into the team concept. Last year he signed a bunch of small forwards who apparently didn't mind sharing the position. There's no reason he can't do that on an ongoing basis. There were some pretty awesome yukon teams that had, and often started, two points.

Do you doubt that in most cases, especially at the college level, players that transfer were happy at their prior school ?

You may disagree with the appelation, but really aren't they unhappy !  Isn't making the ,Final Four", survival of the fittest ?

Always have the sense that Lavs recruits defensive length and effort first and then everything else is second.

I don't discredit that at all, and I remember some good 'nova teams running a 3 guard/2 forwards type lineup. Just wasn't sure how this would work/look for us?
Turner
Branch
Harrison
Sampson
???Sanchez/Chandler(assuming he's here)/Garret/Pointer/???

It would almost seem anticlimatic to get bigs and then go small with a three guard line up.

I'm kinda torn on him for another reason. It has more to do with his situation in high school and Arizona. If Turner has his head in the right place, then he can be very valuable. I had the chance to watch him in high school and he is a pretty, solid player. I don't want a situation to arise where his head isn't screwed on properly and he becomes a problem.

Maybe, he feels this is his last opportunity and makes the best of it. We could easily put Harrison, Branch, and Turner or Greene on the floor and not lose anything. I wouldn't be surprised to see the staff garner commitments from Nolan, Wood, and/or Turner and then focus on the 2014 class. I hear we're in very good shape with Jermaine Lawrence (2013 class).

i agree.....turner when focused can be a major contributor!!! but i have a feeling lav is just waiting on chandler.....wood and turner i can see giving verbals this coming weekend.....i really would not be surprised to see savon on campus real soon as well!!! i know chiles loves hm

The other thing we need to keep in mind is that Coach is still potentially fighting the misunderstandings about his health that drove some of our targets away back in the winter. He may be taking a few more chances now that he won't need to next year when he's back on the sidelines and the concerns about his health subside. We all know that Coach can recruit with anyone, he just needs the playing field to be back in balance.

By the way, I'm not downplaying the seriousness of cancer, but all indications as we know are that he is now cancer free.

How do you know Chiles loves him?

I find that odd because I KNOW its exactly the opposite.

Keep in mind that Turner wouldn't step on the court till 2013. I'm not one who believes this, but plenty of our fans think D'angelo could be a pro after his sophomore or junior season. So between the possibility of guys leaving for the nba, or transfers (which will happen, they happen to everyone), tomorrow is never guaranteed if you know what I mean.

We were the exception last year in that we had such a ridiculously short bench we got used to the notion that starters play 30+ minutes. Nothing wrong with Branch, Harrison, and Turner all playing 25 minutes two years from now if they are all still here.
