Josh Roberts

How about we just enjoy this kid’s progression without comparing him to a guy WHO WAS HALF A FOOT TALLER and PLAYED IN THE LEAGUE FOR 15 YEARS.
Was going to compare him to Wilt Chamberlain but I guess that's off the table now, huh? :silly:
Josh will like that comparisons a lot better than my AC Green one :)

Don't laugh yourself to death but Roberts body frame and talents are very much like Bill Russell at a comparable time. As a college sophomore Russell was 6' 8" tall with a body very similar to Roberts. He couldn't make a shot greater than five feet. His total offensive game was putting in follow ups and taking teammates shots out of the air and guiding them into the hoop which was legal in 1954.
Of course he was a tremendous shot blocker, the greatest ever, and a great rebounder.
Who knows what heights Roberts can reach.

Russell pretty much averaged 20 points and 20 rebounds each of his three years in college. I love Roberts but it is (as you acknowledge) a bit laughable to compare him to one of the greatest players of all time.

Right now he reminds me of a stronger version of Tariq Owens. Hoping he has more Offensive upside than Tariq.
Kenneth Faried
That's exactly what I was thinking, weatherman. A poor man's Kenneth Faried. I only add "poor man's" because Faried led the nation in rebounds and was an All -American as a senior. If Roberts gets there it means that 10 years from now we'll be talking about how, "we need to find another Josh Roberts"

While we're throwing out names, and wishful thinking,
I'll throw out marcus camby.
Now all Robert's has to do is win the poy.
No problem.

The BE portion of the schedule begins on December 31st.

Let's agree that Will Chamberlin, Marcus Camby, Bill Russell, Leroy Ellis, Mitchell Robinson and Kenneth Faried are safe at least until then.

Some of y'all tickle me with these comparisons. Kinda like Kassoum Yakwe to Walter Berry and Bashir Ahmed to Larry Johnson. I know it's still quite early, but I also recall Greg Williams to Lavor Postell as well.

Let Roberts continue to grow as a player before we bestow him with comparisons. Hell! At least give him a chance to see what he brings in conference play.

Well Bill Russell played three seasons of D1 college basketball. His stats were pretty consistent averaging around 20 points and 20 rebounds a game each of his three years. In his last two seasons his San Francisco Don team went 57-1 (including 55 in a row) and won back to back national championships. Russell was the college player of the year in1956, The NCAA turnament MOP in 1955 and was one of the greatest college players ever. He then won an Olympic gold medal in 1956 before going onto the NBA to a legendary career and winning eleven chamionships in thirteen seasons.

While Russell's game developed over time it is unfair to compare anyone to Bill Russell. He is in a class by himself and is the greatest winner that the sport of basketball has ever produced.

That all said Josh Roberts has improved greatly and when comparing the 2019/2020 version of Josh Roberts to the 2018/2019 version of Josh Roberts there is tremendous growth there that makes me optimistic where he might be able to get to by the time his years at SJU are done.

Jared Allen

Not highly regarded in college at all. Developed slowly in the pros and now a potential all star

My comparison of Roberts to Russell was strictly based on body frame and style of play. There is not one in a million chance Roberts will match him in talent but that doesn't mean he can't become an all big east player by his senior year.

If you were to put Roberts in a time machine and send him back to the 50s, he would average 20/20 in college. But you can't and the Bill Russell comparison may be the most laughable ever on this board. The previous winner was the Yakwe/Walter Berry comp.

Frankly, they all are laughable. The guy has essentially played 8 D1 games. SOP though for the board to go overboard negatively or positively on almost anything.

Damn didnt realize some took comparisons so seriously. It’s mostly stylistic.

You don't necessarily have to take something seriously to have an opinion; I realize it is essentially bar talk and people should by all means compare away, I just find it silly.

Just having fun. For some of us at least, one of the best parts of sports is watching players develop and mature. Watching the evolution of Josh Roberts is one of the best things for this program right now and we are hopeful it will continue. No reason to get down on people or mock them for being enthusiastic about it. Enright was not saying he is Bill Russel. He was saying there was a similarity in build and style. I wasn't saying he is as good or skilled as Dennis Rodman. I was just wondering if maybe he could develop into that type of player. He's a hyper quick, springy athlete just like Rodman whose offense was almost entirely near the basket and about the same size if less physically mature. Rodman also had phenomenal hands and Roberts has been surprising in that area. Mentioning Russel or Rodman is about a high bar not a direct comparison obviously. Just fun and enthusiasm. Fan stuff...
