Jordan Sighting

I really never paid much attention to APR. How long would a penalty be for? Does it kick in immediately? If very few here are expecting the tournament, I guess a ban doesn't affect us?
But don't you also lose schollies? That would certainly affect us.

I think we could lose two for a couple years and not actually be too affected. Say we land Ahmed, Ponds, and Yakwe. Those guys plus Sima, Mussini, LoVett, Ellison, Williams, Alibegovic, and Owens are 10. Jones can transfer without penalty after next season. Have no clue what is up with Felix.

Remember UConn was banned from post season play in 2012 for APR problems. I am not suggesting "doom" but hopefully the new staff will keep the issue front and center going forward and improve our score. Majority of kids last season did graduate, but Jordan's departure certainly is not a positive. Obekpa finishing semester would also help I believe.

well I won't lose any sleep if we are banned for next year only :)

Not to be negative, the problem is the next scores would be revealed in late May of 16 & any penalties would kick in for 16-17 season.

"Currently, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in NCAA championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships."

There is a very stupid charade that college athletics is comprised of student athletes. IT very often is not. Throw blame where you may, but it should probably be placed at the bottom of a ticket invoice.

I am telling you right now, because I have seen it, if you are a coach and you want your athletes to be in class, they will be there, you want them in a 2-hour study hall every night during the week, they will be there. Coaches have COMPLETE control over this, no question about it. If they want to truly enforce it or not is up to them. Sometimes an "honor code" is not going to get the job done.

This is exactly why the NBA needs to get rid of that stupid rule where you have to be out of high school for at least 1 year before entering the draft. If a kid knows he is going to the draft, why would he care about academics after basketball season is over? How many classes do you think Okafor or Kentucky's entire team attended once basketball ended?

The NCAA wants these kids to attend college for one year so they can make money off of them, and then they punish the schools for academics that aren't up to par. What did they expect to happen?

Most of these high level athletes use college as an NBA minor league system. They will bolt when the $ comes calling and I can't blame them. Once an athlete knows he is going to get drafted, why should he finish the semester, especially if he hates academics. This is a stupid system and colleges shouldn't get penalized.

You seem to be aware of something I am not, and Redmannorth, who is pretty dialed in to SJU as well. Does SJU have babysitters (for lack of a better term) that make sure bball players are going to class? Don't they receive interim progress reports from professors for basketball players? I thought these controls were in place, but you may know better.

We had what - 6 guys who graduated on time despite carry the two semester load of D1 basketball? then we had two guys who had threatened to leave before and had made up their minds during the spring semester that they weren't coming back, and as such, didn't put any work into academics. Both were eligible after fall semester so they did enough work then. I do agree that had our bench have any depth whatsoever, Lavin would have booted both of them long ago, but it's hard to fault Lavin on the way Obekpa and Jordan played their semesters after the basketball season ended in March.

At least in Jordan's case, he had made up his mind very early in the semester and maybe prior, that this would be his last year at SJU. So he went to class dogged by a babysitter in order to stay out of the doghouse, but punted the rest of the work. By the time he decided to come back and play under Mullin, the ship had sailed (or sunk). Fault Lavin for a lot of stuff and I'd likely agree 100%, but Jordan brought this all on himself, and there was very little LAvin could do about it.

Sheed recently tweeted that he will be entering the D league draft and is now in Florida to train.

Aaaaand he just tweeted this:
