Johnnies??

As most know, the reason why we were originally called the "Redmen" was because we wore red uniforms
Through the years, things changed (ie: Indian mascot, logo, etc)
When the decision was made to become PC, it was mandated that the word "red" be included in the new name
I don't understand why we couldn't have dropped the non PC references and remained the redmen in red uniforms
I will never say or buy anything that says "Red Storm" - one of the dumbest/worst nicknames ever created
And it took a big committee to come up with that crappy name .......... jeez!!!
I still call us the Redmen but will accept Johnnies as a reasonable alternative
Calling us the Johnnies sure beats calling us the Toilets

I just went to the NYT website and searched "Johnnies", all the way back to 1861, the first time we are mentioned using that word is 1994 in an article about a win over Pitt at Pitt bringing us above .500, coach was Mahoney, some players, Shawnelle Scott, Charles Minlend. James Scott, Sergio Luyk and Maurice Brown.

Going back to the turn of the century the first sports reference was to St. Johns College Annapolis and a bunch later to St. Johns Minnesota.

If you look back a few posts, you'll see I quoted the 1965 St. John's yearbook using the term "Johnnies" ... and it wasn't a term it was coining; it's been around for a long time.

(It's difficult to find local sports archives from the 1950s and earlier, but I did find a Brooklyn Eagle article from 1953 that referred to St. John's Prep as the Johnnies. So the name was being used by sportswriters at least as far back as then.)

That's settles it.

"Johnnies" has a history, a logic and what seems to be a majority vote from those among us who find it preferable to Red $*%@# (see - even the computer judges that term to be obscene).

Who and where are the makers and shakers who can bring this to the attention of the powers that be?

What are we - mice or men?

I always scream lets go Redmen redstorm is Harrys legacy Clev indians atl braves & florida state have set up indian settlements to keep their name but Harry failed to negoitate a deal to keep tadition alive
FL St set scholarships up

Ehh.. you still say "I like Ike" at election time.

You have to be old enough to relate to that one - Dwight David Eisenhower - leading World War II general and 1950s 2 term President - from my alma mater

I have kids 21/18 an I'm not sure they would know "I like Ike" or even "WWII" what the latter stands for.

Then again, I'm not so conve4rsant about prior generations.

thanks and all the best

PS I fully undertand the options onr nicknames - whatever works
I just wish they'd get a better mascot - this is NYC we should have the best - the head on the current one is, well,
"off with his head" says the Red Queen, Redstorm Queen...

I am not old enough to know Ike, but have been engrossed in reading books of historical significance, from 1850-1950 so far. Truman is an excellent read.

Eisenhower was a brilliant general, along with Patton, MacArthur, Marshall, and Bradley. Amazing men, whose courage and leadership made our lives so much better. We still feel their's (and the entire Greatest Generation's) contribution to our freedom today.
