Johnnies??

Lavin clearly hates "Redstorm". I don't think I've ever heard him say it actually. And I think in turn, the athletic department has been taking a cue from coach, more and more of the promotional material, press releases, tweets etc say "johnnies", than ever before.

I'm ok with it, because it really has been a secondary nickname for a long time.
But it's never really been a chant till recently. I do find the chant a little weird.... But honestly if people are actually at the games and making noise, we've come a long way! Lol

And Redstorm is growing on people. That coupled with the use of letters as our logo, and coach referring to the team as the johnnies.... There's really no storm in Redstorm anymore. We're just a team that wears red basically.

Ehh.. you still say "I like Ike" at election time.

Way before my time pilgrim

I miss flag boy

YES! and counting how many times he could run in circles with that ginormous SJU flag. One of the more exciting activities during a timeout break. Classic

the heavyset flagboy doing laps gasping for air was like a curly shuffle getting the fans into the game!
bring back Flounder asap.........

My 2 cents:

1. Keep "Let's Go Johnnies" chant- who cares that another small school has that name.

2. Bring back flag boy! Seton Hall uses a flag boy.. ..

3. Get rid of our mascot- sorry very lame. Don't need one.

4. Get some more band members. Need another 7 members..

5. Get the lacrosse team to sit in the student section to rile up the crowd at every home game.

Peace out

Johnnies is ok, but Redmen is still where it's at. We won't change back, but the truth remains.

Have them lead the tee shirt toss...Might be better than the Stout mobile

I don't mind Let's Go Johnnies at all.

I would also like them to do WE ARE...ST. JOHN'S, alternating between the two student sections on each baseline. Hopefully, the rest of the arena would join in.

They will always be the REDMEN to me. I will NOT buy any of the crap that says Red Storm on it. This politically correct BS is just stupid. If the NCAA was actually interested in stopping racial stereotypes in college sports,,they would address the Notre Dame situation. As an "Irish American" I am offended by, not only the demeaning leprichaun, but also the "fighting Irish" tag which demeans us as unintelligent and violent. That having been said, the NCAA must stop Notre Dame's belittling of my heritage.

So...are you for PC or against it? (Insert smiley)

My heart and mind was resolute in the first half of the post while my tongue was firmly in my cheek in the second half. I hope you recognized the NCAA hypocrisy I intended to expose.

Just as a reminder, the "We are .. St. John's" chant is a victory chant, almost always reserved for the closing moments when victory is assured.

It can also be used when you are completely wiping the floor with your opponent and they call a timeout.

It is NOT a rallying cry.

It's more like "We ARE ST. JOHN'S" with the unsaid words "We kicked your butt.."

Don't think you'd get very far, but maybe you can picket Notre Dame about doing away with using the Irish image. Then again, as you undoubtedly know, most Irish Americans love this image, so I don't think you'd get very far.

Yes, we all know the Irish, like just about every other immigrant group, were subject to discrimination (by other European immigrant groups, no less), but unlike Native Americans, the Irish were never the target of an official government-sponsored policy of genocide -- one which, sadly, was very successful. Big difference, one not even remotely worthy of comparisons. And with regard to demeaning stereotypical images of Native Americans, it's not a matter of PC; it's a matter of decency and respect -- things in keeping with the mission of a Catholic university.

I did. I was just messing with you. My smileys aren't working.

I'm old but I think Let's go Johnnies is fine. I buy the Red Storm stuff when it's available and have no problem with the retirement of the Redmen name even though I was involved with that once upon a time. Hey, let's win some games and people can call us anything they want to call us.
I was delighted when I heard the crowd at the Garden chanting "Let's go Johnnies" at the SH game. The spirit of the StJ fans seems really to be on the way back. That's good news for everyone.

As far back as I can remember the sporwriters always referred to our teams as the Johnnies. I don't remember a Johnnie cheer, but the papers always called them Redmen or Johnnies............It has been going on forever.

There are a couple of hundred thousand Irish in graves in Louisiana who would disagree with you.

Ehh.. you still say "I like Ike" at election time.

You have to be old enough to relate to that one - Dwight David Eisenhower - leading World War II general and 1950s 2 term President - from my alma mater

I have kids 21/18 an I'm not sure they would know "I like Ike" or even "WWII" what the latter stands for.

Then again, I'm not so conve4rsant about prior generations.

thanks and all the best

PS I fully undertand the options onr nicknames - whatever works
I just wish they'd get a better mascot - this is NYC we should have the best - the head on the current one is, well,
"off with his head" says the Red Queen, Redstorm Queen...

I just went to the NYT website and searched "Johnnies", all the way back to 1861, the first time we are mentioned using that word is 1994 in an article about a win over Pitt at Pitt bringing us above .500, coach was Mahoney, some players, Shawnelle Scott, Charles Minlend. James Scott, Sergio Luyk and Maurice Brown.

Going back to the turn of the century the first sports reference was to St. Johns College Annapolis and a bunch later to St. Johns Minnesota.

I can't even get myself to say "Red Storm."

It is so contrived, artificial and unimaginative that it belongs on a stack of also-rans in a naming contest for an energy drink.

I don't like it.

Redmen is preferred but Johnnies has a nice ring to it and flows naturally out of the university's name.

Go Johnnies!
