Johnnies??

Last year I commented on our new chant of the last few years (Lets Go Johnnies) & I was surprised to see how many people actually prefer it instead of something like lets go St. John's (I know Red Storm will never fly & I am ok with that). But below is exactly why I just can't stand the "Johnnies" chant.

http://www.gojohnnies.com/

It's an actual Division 3 school. I just hate the idea that we use a name that is the "real name" of another school. Yes, I know that we have been referred to as the "Johnnies" for years as a secondary name but to me that has always been the same as the Yankees being called the Bombers, Amazins for the Mets, Gang Green for the Jets, Big Blue for the Giants. You never hear fans ever chanting these secondary names for those teams. Why not just chant lets go St. John's, I can't imagine that anyone has an issue with that. I know most people are going to reply that they like "Johnnies" or prefer it but I think it's one of the worst chants, maybe 2nd to the Bonnies of of St. Bonaventure. I cringe when that chant starts, there...I've vented.

I always scream lets go Redmen redstorm is Harrys legacy Clev indians atl braves & florida state have set up indian settlements to keep their name but Harry failed to negoitate a deal to keep tadition alive

On gameday I walk around my house saying Lets Go Johnnies-- hours before the game even starts--- my son thinks I'm crazy....and my girlfriend won't watch the games with me.

Huh? I hear the lets go Johnnies chant at almost every game.....what's wrong with it?

Nothing, if you want to be taken for a D3 school. OK, that's a stretch but it's only been the last few years that we've chanted that at the games, not sure where it came from

If you listen to coach Lav talk, he refers to his team as the Johnnies all the time.

That chant has been around for a long time. The further we get into the Red Storm era, the more and more diminished the "Let's go REdmen" chant becomes. The Lets Go Johnnies chant was around during Norm's tenure, the only problem was that no one was at the games and there wasn't anything to cheer about.

And agreed, Coach Lavin refers to the team as the Johnnies on a consistent basis.

Yep, the old school Mullin era chant was ....Lets go Redmen- clap, clap, clap, clap clap........(5) claps

I know, as does Mullin in his promo, but it is recent, I think it was Norm's last year when I first heard it. I still don't see what's wrong with "St. John's"? Would you rather be the St. John's Red Storm or the St. John's Johnnies (if the school ever changed the name again). If most people are ok with being the Johnnies then so be it. To me We Are St. John's...not We Are St. John's Johnnies, that is unless you live in Minnesota.

I miss flag boy

YES! and counting how many times he could run in circles with that ginormous SJU flag. One of the more exciting activities during a timeout break. Classic

I have always hated the name Johnnies. I prefer Red Storm, over anything else, including that dull old Redmen.
I always cheer them on by saying either "Let's go St. John's!", or "Let's go Red Storm!"

Really don't think there's any chance whatsoever that we'd be taken for a D3 school because we're being called the Johnnies. To think that's the case is ... well, it's bizarre. Sportswriters & commentators have been calling us that for as long as I can remember -- before either Lavin or Roberts ever heard of St. John's -- and I've never be the least bit uncomfortable with it. As for Redmen being used less frequently by fans, it's no mystery: older fans are dying off, and newer fans have no problem with Red Storm; it's the name they've grown up hearing.

I know, I said in one of my posts that getting taken for the D3 school is not likely to happen. The writers and commentators have also called the Yankees & Mets Bombers & Amazins, but you don't hear that chanted. I guess I have to accept the fact that I am in the minority here. To me it's a sissy type chant & I will never say it, but I can accept that I am stuck with hearing that.

LETS GO ST. JOHNS!!!! ; )

LETS GO ST. JOHNS!!!! ; )

Just checked the 1965 St. John's yearbook (I was a frosh at the time): Johnnies was used in describing the team's exploits. For example, from a recap of our memorable 79-77 win over Miami (when Rick Barry scored 39 points): "Bobby Mac then put the Johnnies ahead with a foul shot").

The only time I questioned the name Johnnies was a few years back when someone here suggested we nickname CA "the Loo." The idea of the Johnnies playing in the Loo just didn't sound right.
