John McGriff Recent Workout Courtesy of Moose

Happy to see he is healthy. I could see him getting 5-10 minutes a game backing up Posh. Expect that his speed will make him a pest and an asset based on the way Coach MA wants to play.

Let’s not go overboard though. I don’t see him as much of a scorer. More of a high energy get the ball up the floor guy and disrupter on defense. Nothing wrong with that.
Were there really 424 better HS players than him?
Not sure but the other way to think about it is there are 5 positions. I'm sure it's more dominated by guards, but perhaps he was a top 100-200 point guard out of HS. Sounds better, I'll go with that !!

A word on HS rankings
So subjective!
When we see JMc play we will know :)

They say speed beats height, yes he can get posted up but the team will watch out for that by switching then again he might steal the ball from a 6 4;guard guess what I am saying it will work out fine

I guess we know why he didn't transfer like a lot of posters were expecting -- because he looks good enough to play at this level. Shame he wasn't healthy this season.
CMA wants quick and athletic players that understand his defensive schemes and have the fast hands and instincts to create havoc on defense and speed up the game. Since his attacking mode on defense causes a lot of turnovers, he wants players that can get down the court quickly and finish or find the open man on the break. I think McGriff will earn his minutes. What a great dilemma to have: finding minutes for quality players. I can't remember saying that in a long, long time.
Best defensive PG in BE history was this guy, and he was 5'9:

You don't have to be 6'4 to stop a PG from penetrating, or starting a half court set. And if teams want to hoist 25 footers all day over him then sign me up. Long jumpers lead to fast breaks. This team would feast on teams that did that.

Exactly why we performed well vs Creighton under CMA. It’s the teams like Butler that take the air out of the ball that do/will give us the toughest time. The teams with gunners can try to do so over our “short” guards but we will be off and running.

Was wondering the same thing I was 6-0 ft and dunked two handed So I saw him dunking off the drive and said WoW 5-9 I be inclined to think he is taller now

FWIW, SJU website lists him at 6'0. He doesn't look it, but everyone else's height seems to be accurately represented for the most part. His dunking with ease makes me think he has grown a bit.

Looked back at McGriff's recruitment just to refresh my memory. He was a 3-star guy on both 247 and ESPN with offers from Minnesota, Kansas State, VCU, UNLV, etc. That feels like a level of recruit that while being right in our wheelhouse isn't a lock with that list of fellow high-majors. What I'm saying is that usually we'd be hoping to win that recruiting battle. He's clearly got some game.

Dunn's got one more year. Unless we get lucky with an elite-level PG prospect in the next class or two, Posh with McGriff as a potential back-up (and who knows?) set us up very nicely at PG for the immediate future.

Looks like our depth will allow us to put pressure on the opponent. Hopefully, less of a drop off in substitution.

I'm not even sure he looked 5'9".

I happen to walk by him last July when I was visiting campus with my daughter.

I'm 5'6, and I'd feel confident to say he was 5'9", maybe 5'10" at best with seakers. No way was he 6'0.

Still young so maybe he grows a bit more too.

Posh Alexander seems like he's getting a generous height listing too.

Lol idk who started the 5’9 rumor, but he is a legit 6 ft. I’ve stood next to him a couple of times and I’m 5-11 almost 6 ft.

O'Connell was listed at 6'2" both at Maryland for lacrosse and this year for basketball. Seated and a picture hard to tell but I think he's 2-3 inches taller.
