He finished the season batting .305. I think he has enough at bats to challenge for Rookie of the Year.
He only played in 73 games with only 1 homer, 10 doubles, and no steals. Very solid B.A. and a good OBP around .345, but not near enough games.
Panik solved the Giants' second base problem after Scutero went down and other options were tried...They're in the playoffs. deGrom was a nine game winner who had no impact on a pennant race.
There are two sides to that, though. If deGrom was on a playoff team, he would have 15 wins. The kid was nearly an automatic quality start.
I will cheer for Panik like crazy, because I love St. John's and wish all of its alumni well. However, even if he hit .335, 73 game is just not enough to win that award minus absurd production like 25 homers 125 hits or 75 rbi....something that can stand against stats of guys that played a whole season. deGrom's ERA since Panik started was 1.77 with an 8-2 record. His ERA in that span was third best in the majors behind only Kershaw and Corey Kluber.
