Jay Wright to retire. Kyle Neptune from Fordham likely to takeover

I was shocked when I saw this. I have no love for Villanova as a school or it’s fans but a ton of respect for Jay Wright and the coaching career he had at Villanova and the positive impact that he had on his players. He will be missed by the Big East. I hope Neptune can keep the program at a high level as they have been extremely important to the conference since it has been reformed.
I share Andrew's sentiments, and these from a Nova Fan post
A few quick takes:
1) I hope Coach Wright’s health is ok.
2) I almost can’t believe this
3) what a way to big league the shameless Coach K retirement tour

Wright probably didnt want to change with the game. He wasnt using the portal and probably hated the NIL stuff.

I am sure the portal and NIL makes these coaches have to grind even more and at 60, maybe he just didnt want to put the effort in anymore.

Hopefully, he will work for Fox Sports and stay with the Big East.

Calhoun - and it is not even close. What he did at Uconn under the circumstances of the Big East at that time.

Wright is #2 for me for how he's elevated Nova post-realignment. No knock on Wright, who is fantastic. But I think Calhoun, as much as I dislike him, did the best program building job in the history of college basketball.

Begrudgingly agree. I find the fifth coach spot in BE Coach Mt Rushmore difficult. Maybe that's why they always only have 4 heads. But if you go by total wins, NCAA Tourney appearances or Conference titles, then it's Louie. Besides the top 4 no BE coaches made more than 1 Final Four, or won more than 2 conference tourneys. The other two to consider would be Mike Brey and Jamie Dixon. While PJ has a final four the other three are about equal or better in every other metric, especially winning %. Dixon, Louie and Chris Mack are the only guys outside the top 4 to win more than 70% of their games.

It seems pretty obvious that this was not a spur of the moment or even recent decision by coach Wright. It has been known in the Nova Athletic Admin for some time. This line by the school's president kind of gives that away...

" After meeting with several exceptional candidates, we found all those attributes and more in Villanova’s new William B. Finneran Endowed Head Coach, Kyle Neptune."

Clearly they were looking for a while.

Looie based on the founding of the conference has to be in the top 5.

He didn't coach long in the conference, 2 years at Providence+10 at Louisville but Pitino would have to be near the top just in terms of productivity in those 10 years. Took PC to the Final 4 in just 2 years, took Louisville to 3 Final 4's and 2 while they were in the BE. 2 other Final 8's. And last 5 years in the conference: 08-09 (BE regular season and Tourney Champ #1 overall NCAA Seed), 09-2010-NCAA's, 10-11: BE Tourney Final, 11-12:BE Tourney Champ-Final 4, 2012-13:BE share of regular season, BE Tourney Title-3rd in 5 years, no. 1 overall NCAA seed and National Champ. I understand it was vacated but still that is a helluva run in a conference that included Jim Boeheim, Jim Cahoun, Mike Brey, Bob Huggins, Jamie Dixon, Jay Wright, Mick Cronin, JTIII.

When your program envies SJU in terms of facilities and success, and you take a team farther than Louie ever had with a fraction of a fraction of the talent.... that's why PJ deserves the spot over him.
He built a consistent Top 25 power from nothing.
Guys who inherit bottom tier programs and turn them around have to get more consideration.
No one touches Calhoun. Not even close.
And that's also why JT is no. 2.

Jay Wright's retirement press conference was a good listen. He has known he was retiring for awhile now. Came to the decision during the season and let the AD know before the Big East tournament. They tried to talk him out of it for awhile but couldnt.

Jay said he just lost his edge. He could not bring 100% everyday anymore and he cant coach like that.

If that’s the case you’d think the sooner they announced it the better it would have been. They lost a month or so of portal activity that Neptune could have been using. Of course maybe he already was.

We all could have seen this coming.
Once he gave up the suits it was a tell tale sign.

All kidding aside I wish him and his family the best first and foremost. If he ever gets the urge can't see it being 82 game NBA. We'll see but I think its the last we see him coaching. Ala Cowher.

It seems that Neptune is going to follow the same philosophy as Wright. And Wright didnt use the portal. So that might not have mattered.

He has an excellent recruiting class coming in and I am sure Neptune is re-recruiting them and all returnees.

I respect that. Going when you know its over if you can and your better off not being talked into staying. Continuing to go on usually means no matter how much you try, the effort, heart and desire isn't there and you and your team end of suffering. Too many stay on because of a sense of obligation or take on a job they don't really want or have turned down before because someone throws them an offer they can't refuse. And no matter how much they try, it doesn't work out.

Respected coach who built and ran a fantastic program.

I’m sure he is and I bet he does a good job. My point is waiting till now, assuming this was already planned, does no one any favors. Doesn’t make it easier on nova or Fordham. Not that nova cares about Fordham, but I’m sure Neptune does. The players at least.

Amase, must be a complicated situation when a legend like Wright is leaving. For sure, he wouldn't want players to know while they were still playing and my guess is administration asked him to delay announcement while they tried to change his mind. For good or bad, effect on Fordham probably the last thing on anyone's mind at Nova.

I imagine the stats I culled to get some background did not included the vacated wins etc.... Agree he has to be up there with Looie almost as much due to the Providence run as the Louisville days.
