Jarell Martin, PF

My feelings are that it's a three-team race between Louisville, UCLA and St. John's..

So glad to see Baylor out of con$ideration. I believe they were on his first list.

Jarell is a big body. Would be a huge get for us. I can just imagine a front court of Obekpa, Martin/Sanchez and Sampson. We'd tear it up.

I'd like to think it could come down to those 3 schools you've mentioned, and we come out on top. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be at all surprised, if those were the final 3 schools when it all shakes out. I just have a hunch Alabama and/or LSU will make the cut in the spring. Grant seems to be revving it up down in Tuscaloosa, as he's in the "thick of it" with Anthony Barber and Troy Williams. LSU is the "home" school and has a new coaching staff, so that might lend some credence to their reasoning for nabbing Martin.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't count out our staff ending up on Martin's short list once spring rolls around. If we can get an unofficial or official visit (preferably, an official), then I'd really feel good about potentially landing Martin. Regardless, you have to have a dog in the fight, in order to have a chance. Currently, we seem to be in fairly, decent shape.

The Zags article with Jarell's coach shows that the kid seems to be enamoured with big market exposure. I know LSU has a good shot as any at landing him just seems like possibly Jarell wants to venture outside of Louisiana for college. Plus he'll have a lot on his shoulders in that conference going up against Kentucky with not much help. Gathers bolted the area too. But yeah, Bama has good prospects for him to play with.

This Martin and Lawrence recruiting run is going to be interesting. Glad Lavin can lock in and not have to spread himself thin chasing 7-8 kids this time around. He's dangerous when he has that much focus.

Bingo! This is what I'm banking on.

Per Rivals (premium article).... Martin has trimmed his list down to seven schools, and he'll (supposedly) sign in the spring.

LSU, Alabama, Louisville, Oklahoma State, St. John's, Texas A&M and UCLA.

"He decided to wait until the spring in order to give himself time to thoroughly evaluate the schools on his list and watch them play this season," Jones told Rivals.com. "This is such a big decision that he didn't want to rush into it. He wants to be able to take his time and also enjoy the recruiting process."

I don't know how others on the board feel but I think that this is a huge year for Lavin and Co. in terms of future recruiting. This is Lavins first year with a full roster of all his recruits. If he has another player like Harrison, Sampson or Sanchez make the jump to the NBA after this year I think the recruits really start flowing in. Of course, if this were to happen, it also probably means that we had a very successful year and advanced pretty far into March. Even though we are still young, I think this year is key. Especially with Dunlap leaving. That being said, I think we have as much talent as any other team in Big East.

On the court I agree. Need to make dance, no excuses otherwise. '13 is not a big recruiting year because we could arguably lose just 1 guy (Gift).

And it seems our top targets (Lawrence and Martin) want to wait until the spring. Lav has proven he can nab guys in the spring, so it puts huge emphasis on how we play. Plus its laying the groundwork for '14 which is a much more important class IMO.

Agreed Moose, I was refering to Martin and Lawrence and the fact that they wanted to wait until the Spring.

Martin Lawrence.........would great to get this comedic talent at SJ!

I'm guessing these are Martin's five officials, considering players are only able to take 5 visits. I'd love to nab this kid.

2013 F Jarell Martin will take officials 'as of now' to #stjbb, UCLA, Alabama, Okla. State & Texas A&M, his coach Jeff Jones tells @SNY

UCLA should be our only competition for this kid.

He still has hometown LSU on his list. I wouldn't count out the local school. I'm sure he's been there quite a few times, so no need to take an official to LSU.

As a fan of both schools, would be thrilled if that those are his two final choices. I'd remind that he'll be a freshman for the 2014 season - and UCLA for that season (as it stands now) will have Josh Smith (McD All American), Travis Wear (McD All American), David Wear (McD All American) as Seniors at the 4/5 for that season, as well as Tony Parker (McD All American), and Kyle Anderson (McD All American) as Sophs also ini the mix at the 4 for that season. Smith and Anderson MAY be gone, but it's in no way a "sure thing". In terms of available playing time, I'd think SJU would have the better shot....

Don't discount Boone Pickens University.

@ECoastBias: #stjbb RT @DaveTelep: Jarell Martin tomorrow at 130. Press conference at Madison Prep. Betting on LSU. Okla St, A&M, Alabama, St. John's

Call me a pessimist but I don't expect to see him committing to SJU tomorrow.

If it was sometime in the spring, yes. But this early and I don't think he took his official here.

Bummer.

Full court press on Lawrence now.

More than likely, he's headed to LSU, if he's deciding tomorrow. Trust me, I would love to get him, but I'm not sweating it.

This staff has shown me enough to where they'll land quality players. I also wouldn't doubt to see more names pop up on our radar. I still feel confident that we'll nab Jordan and/or Lawrence when it's said and done.
