Jarell Martin, PF

Martin supposedly will not sign during the early period.... It also seems Kansas and Arizona were eliminated based on this particular piece.

Madison Prep’s Jarell Martin has made a meteoric rise through the ranks of boys basketball recruits in the class of 2013.

The 6-foot-9½ senior-to-be has been busy attending camps, tournaments and showcases this summer, pushing his stock even higher. Martin is now rated the nation’s No. 13 prospect by Rivals.com. Louisiana’s top 2013 prospect has also taken stock of his recruiting status and has narrowed his list of colleges to eight finalists. The list includes LSU, along with national heavyweights like UCLA, Texas A&M and Louisville. Martin had more than 60 scholarship offers.

Though he plans to make up to five recruiting trips this fall, Martin said he does not plan to sign during the NCAA’s early season period in November.

Very nice article and he seems to be the perfect recruit for the program.
What a front line we could have.
I will continue to dream.

I agree! We could have a very, solid front line. The thing is you have to hope he sticks around for a couple seasons. I like to hear schools like Kansas and Arizona not making the cut.

UCLA, Louisville, and the hometown team (LSU) are the schools that concerns me. I know Tulane is also a team from Martin's home state, but I'll be shocked if he were to choose the Green Wave.

Hopefully, Lavin and the staff can get this one done.

Per Rivals....

Martin strong for USA Blue 2013

Team USA Blue 2013 didn't get started until Sautrday but picked up a pair of wins to finish the day undefeated. The standout performer for Reggie Theus' squad on Saturday was Louisiana big man Jarell Martin. The five-star power forward went for 13 points early in the day before coming up with a big 20-point performance in his squad's OT win over Latin America. Martin consistently kept plays alive in the paint and made efficient use of his possessions, converting 12 of 19 field goal attempts and averaging 10 free-throw attempts per game.

Are we still in the conversation with him? He's absolutely blowing up in the rankings

We are amongst his top 8 schools.

This is coming from Ron Briscoe.... He once use to be a recruiting analyst for HoopScoop several years ago. I don't recall Arizona being mentioned any longer (nor recall Baylor being listed) with Martin, per the article from last week.

This is supposedly his top 5 schools:

XOFan, XOFan_SEC 2013 6-8 F Jarrell Martin Madison Prep Baton Rouge, LA top 5 schools are LSU, Alabama, Louisville, Arizona, and Baylor,

It also seems like Damian Jones listed the Johnnies. Remember, we were once being mentioned with Jones back in January. Jones had a solid summer.

XOFan, XOFan_SEC 2013 6-10 PF Damian Jones Scotlandville HS Baton Rouge, LA top 5 schools are LSU, Florida, Alabama, Oklahoma, & St. Johns

By the way, folks.... Remember this name: Happy belated 14yrs old birthday to 2016 6-1 2G Seventh Woods of SC. He's one of the best up an coming HS basketball players in the nation

Per Rivals (premium article).... Martin has trimmed his list down to seven schools, and he'll (supposedly) sign in the spring.

LSU, Alabama, Louisville, Oklahoma State, St. John's, Texas A&M and UCLA.

"He decided to wait until the spring in order to give himself time to thoroughly evaluate the schools on his list and watch them play this season," Jones told Rivals.com. "This is such a big decision that he didn't want to rush into it. He wants to be able to take his time and also enjoy the recruiting process."

I like his list. I think we can fare well with that bunch. All good schools of course, but I think the fact that we're there alone speaks well. I think we'll make the short list this spring unless we land Jermaine Lawrence earlier.

My feelings are that it's a three-team race between Louisville, UCLA and St. John's..

So glad to see Baylor out of con$ideration. I believe they were on his first list.

Jarell is a big body. Would be a huge get for us. I can just imagine a front court of Obekpa, Martin/Sanchez and Sampson. We'd tear it up.

I think its going to be tough to get Bama and LSU out of consideration.

I'd like to think it could come down to those 3 schools you've mentioned, and we come out on top. Quite frankly, I wouldn't be at all surprised, if those were the final 3 schools when it all shakes out. I just have a hunch Alabama and/or LSU will make the cut in the spring. Grant seems to be revving it up down in Tuscaloosa, as he's in the "thick of it" with Anthony Barber and Troy Williams. LSU is the "home" school and has a new coaching staff, so that might lend some credence to their reasoning for nabbing Martin.

Nevertheless, I wouldn't count out our staff ending up on Martin's short list once spring rolls around. If we can get an unofficial or official visit (preferably, an official), then I'd really feel good about potentially landing Martin. Regardless, you have to have a dog in the fight, in order to have a chance. Currently, we seem to be in fairly, decent shape.

If immediate PT is an issue, then UCLA has a problem with 2013 bigs. Josh Smith, David Wear, and Travis Wear are back as seniors for 2014, and Tony Parker will be back as a Sophmore. All four are former McD AAs. Add to that Zags report that Kyle Anderson is also getting run at the 4 in practice, and it's a pretty deep rotation already. Minutes open up big-time the following year. I don't see them getting someone quite as highly ranked as Martin in the 2013 class. Tho, in retrospect, Tony Parker signed on with all those guys (plus Anthony Stover) with TWO years in front of him - but that was the Shabazz/Kyle factor, and that kinda "convergence" happens rarely.

Per Zags.... Nothing particularly new to this piece (other than the announcement of the remaining schools).

Jarell Martin, a 6-foot-9, 223-pound combo forward from Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep, has cut his list to seven schools and will decide in the spring.

“He cut his list down a little bit,” his high school coach, Jeff Jones, told SNY.tv.

“He’s going to decide in the spring. No visits are set so far.”

The news was first reported by Rivals.com.
Martin cut Kansas, Arizona and Tulane from his list and is now considering Alabama, Louisville, LSU, Oklahoma State, St. John’s, Texas A & M and UCLA.

I don't know how others on the board feel but I think that this is a huge year for Lavin and Co. in terms of future recruiting. This is Lavins first year with a full roster of all his recruits. If he has another player like Harrison, Sampson or Sanchez make the jump to the NBA after this year I think the recruits really start flowing in. Of course, if this were to happen, it also probably means that we had a very successful year and advanced pretty far into March. Even though we are still young, I think this year is key. Especially with Dunlap leaving. That being said, I think we have as much talent as any other team in Big East.

On the court I agree. Need to make dance, no excuses otherwise. '13 is not a big recruiting year because we could arguably lose just 1 guy (Gift).

And it seems our top targets (Lawrence and Martin) want to wait until the spring. Lav has proven he can nab guys in the spring, so it puts huge emphasis on how we play. Plus its laying the groundwork for '14 which is a much more important class IMO.
