Jakarr Sampson Decommits

Per teammate Mitch McGary's Twitter. Also former Brewster teammate Khalid McKaskill who is walk on at UCLA this year is asking if he likes UCLA.

Moose, so what is the tweet ?? As of yesterday he gave mixed messages to friends on the SJ campus. Also, if true, the one of the three that would have had a tough time cracking the starting lineup with Gathers next year. If this is actually the case the staff will want an official de-commit so they can lock up the Philly kid.

my bro @KarrSampson14 just decommited from St.Johns University and reopened his recruiting! Package deal?! #Brewster
I expect Turgeon to take advantage of the situation and try to do exactly that when Mitch comes down to UMD for an official soon.  But Amile really likes MD. We'll see if that twists and turns

Amile is a SF and McGarry is a PF. Where would that leave Kar in the rotation.....same scenario as SJ. Kar's problem is getting the grade wherever he ends up.

Everyone needs to relax a little, like usguard stated, there is a LOT of young talent here.,,,
I understand it's been a rough past few days, but let's keep things in perspective. It is a time for rebuilding, there are going to be bumps in the road. Let's get the season started and all will be well...

I'm actually curious where we will be sitting at the Garden this season as a lot of the section numbers have been changed with the renovations...

The problem is with the 2012 class is that if you recall last Fall names drop very quickly. In addition at this stage of the game most kids are down to 3, 4 or 5 schools so getting involved would be VERY late in the game. It's safe to say we put a lot of our eggs in Kyle's basket. When haven't been mentioned with Amile since Darrick committed. Opekpa we have been mentioned with but others seem to be on him heavier than us (SHU, Uconn, Prov). Joel James was mentioned once very briefly when Jevon decommitted. Jevon will NOT be considered again. Outside of that aren't many 2012 names we have been mentioned with.

No question someone will pop out of nowhere (ala Reinhardt). But there is no poo pooing its very late in the game. And the worst part is we are unsure where we stand with 3 players in Jakarr, Amir and Pelle so staff is kind of handcuffed.

Well said Moose.. If the 3 don't show up we are not looking great for 2012.

At least it wasn't Pelle...if that happens, it's really bad news. Garret looks like a good bet to stay he really loves it at St. John's.

Nate is saying on Twitter Mitch and Jakarr like Kentucky and his early guy says 'Cal gets it done'.

Yep, his problem is most big programs are going to have some competition in either the 3 or 4 slot. Karr's going to have to go with a program that's best for him and roll the dice. That being said, I feel SJ's style of play is a great fit for him. He made the right choice, but if he blinks, or doesn't link up with another very good "teaching" program, it could hurt his recruitment and where he winds up. Right now, he better hit the books hard.

He chose another full year at his old prep school. De-committing allows him to take trips and visit schools not originally on his list. The verbal by Gathers I think was a major factor as Gathers would eat Karr alive at the PF slot and Harkless is set at SF. So he made a move to better his playing options and was influenced by his old coach as soon as he stepped foot back at prep.

What makes you say " Gathers will eat Jakarr alive at the power forward spot" ??

I think he meant to say Gathers will eat him alive. (period) lol

In actuality, RG and JS would complement each other with their differing style of play. Some on the boards do not realize that these guys at most will play 30-34 min per game in an optimal situation, which may be with a so-so team. With top teams, a duo can still play 25-30 min/gm if they are versatile enough to play in a 2nd position for a while, which both players can do (albeit different ones - 3 or 5). The old grass is always greener phrase is in play now. I say JaKarr may discover SJ's is the best place for him because of the staff and the good group of young men he originally verballed with. The odds may not be great, but it's still possible.

Is it me or what .If I were the coach and a player made a committment. Then chose to de-committ because he could not play based on his grades,do not think I would want him after decommitting. Any school he was with he would have had the same problem. Was not SJU fault ,he should be a man of his word get the credit he needs and stay with the scool he chose. Othewise wish him luck but not at SJU.We have great wings would not break my heart if he leaves. Seems like garrett wants to play for us that great Pelle I do not know . If he chooses to decommitt put him in Jarkars category.

Would not be surprised if a player and/or parent is upset with the staff at SJU. From their point of view they did everything that was asked of them and did it superbly well (at least on paper) and now find themsleves sitting out what was to be their first semester in college.

Although it is undoubtedly the fault of the inscrutable NCAA it would appear that they were given questionable advice by those in whose hands they had placed themselves.

He's well within his right to de-commit, just like it's my right to think very poorly of him. Hopefully Gathers makes it here so I'll never have to waste another second thinking of Sampson.

You must be kidding right? He was not at prep school because he was an honor student holding an offer from Duke or UCLA. I think SJ did the best any school could have done. If he de-committed within a week it means he would have been the first to transfer next year. It could also be that his prep coach and friends told him to start over and get some free trips in the process. Without decom other coaches would have shyed away. He seemed to be a likable kid but he would have needed to bulk up to play BE ball and bigger players were going to be a challenge.
