Jakarr Sampson has signed a partially guaranteed three-year deal for league minimum with Philadelphia per source. #sjubb

Congratulations Jakarr that is a big time accomplishment!

I guess most of us were wrong that he wouldn't make it. Congrats to jakarr.

Fantastic news for both Jakaar and the program, this can only help with recruiting going forward for Coach Lavin having continue to get players into the league.
Go Jakaar , go SJU.

Kid believed in himself and his ability and was in the right situation. He looked good at times
in summer league and has been rewarded. Good for Lavin and good for St. John's.
Congratulations Jakarr.

I mean this in the least offensive way possible to both him and his most ardent supporters, but for anyone who followed him in summer league, was he one of the better performers, or is this another part of the 76ers' master plan to tank? They've been doing it for two years now. I'd much prefer that he played great, or that they see a ton of potential, but I really don't trust the Sixers at all.

All that aside, it's great news for him -- and for Lavin, who can now sell another pro to a high school kid. I thought he'd end up in the middle of nowhere, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong so far.

Also, I had no clue that the NBA had partially guaranteed contracts. . .

I going out on a limb here, but I believe Philadelphia ignored all of Marillac's scouting reports regarding Sampson on redmen.com

Thrilled for Jakarr. Not sold on the fact that this is going to be such a positive for our program. See Jordan and others, who may not be anywhere near ready, using this as another reason to bolt way to soon.

Good point. I think Jordan is gone regardless of what happens, but Obekpa might be convinced to finish out his eligibility, so this might influence him to bolt.

I do think Lavin can show this to the 2015 Sampson and get some mileage out of it, though.

Why? Cause they share a last name? Lol, they play two completely different positions, so I do not see how he can persuade Brandon with that.

Great news for Jakarr. He's a huge talent and by all accounts a great kid. Thrilled for him, but just reinforces my opinion that we will be hard pressed to fill the scoring void he's leaving tnis season.

My guess is there is a very small amount of guaranteed money. It is probably a routine deal given to those invited to camp. If he makes the team, they have him locked up on the cheap. If not, they cut him at an insignificant financial loss. Remember, teams were not exactly vying for his services. They have no reason to commit three years to an undrafted guy who has not taken an NBA shot.

I will be shocked if he is on the opening night roster. Shocked.

"If I can get an undersized PF with limited SF skills into the league, I can get a SG with decent height and great scoring ability there in one season, especially with Briscoe breaking down defenses for you and Diallo to kick misses back out for you."

I would have to agree with you that this deal does not guarantee him a roster spot, but I'd also think that you don't spend money on a guy unless you intend you keep him on a d-League roster if he doesn't make the team. He still has long odds ahead of him, but even if the 76ers guaranteed only 100K, this would at least offset the loss of tuition for the next two years. I thought he was our most reliable shooter 15 feet and in last year, and could have been our top scorer this upcoming season with modest improvement. His putback slam at CA last season was one of the most electrifying moments in an otherwise disappointing campaign. Good luck to him - I really hope he makes it.

The coach of the 76ers' Orlando summer league team is close friends with LeBron James, as per this tweet:

LeBron James ‏@KingJames
S/O my great friend @LloydPierceLP coaching for Philly in summer league. He's really good and is climbing that ladder. #LaFamilia

I have to believe that relationship played at least some role in all of this. In any event, if Jakarr is guaranteed, say, 20% of this year's salary, then that's about $100k to prove himself. He could very well end up with squat. But if he was hellbent on leaving anyway, it's better than straight to D league pay. But for the Rysheed Jordan's or Obekpa's who don't have a LeBron James in their corner, I hope this doesn't set a precedent.
