is this team really that much more improved

According to a very reliable source who was with the team across the pond , Branch is light years ahead of last year !!!!!!!!

This would be the best possible news for the team. If Branch somehow rises to a legit all-conference guard, this team becomes exponentially better. There will be a lot of question marks with this team. They will also need to gel and some guys will have to accept different and/or lesser roles. That stuff is never easy. Even with Max and Harrison, shooting will still probably be an area we aren't great in. There is really no low post threat. We are definitely not a sure thing, but I think we can be really good if things work out.

I'm splitting hairs but I think we have low post scorers in Sanchez and gift. They may not be back to the basket post up scorers but they can catch a feed at the block and go up strong, something Obekpa and Sampson werent great at last year. Those two will help our guards rack up more assists, especially Dlo who had a nack for finding moe and gift once he got in the lane his freshmen year.

If this team clicks on all cylinders, Lavin will look like a genius for redshirting GG, and providing lots of muscle, depth, and different looks up front. Those early first half whistles for foul #2, and second half for #3 won't be nearly as painful as the last couple of years with the depth we have.

Most athletic team in the country , 5 NBA players on the roster , 11/12 deep if we want to be , guard heavy , big bodies , experienced upper class man . We are a much more improved team , we will win at least 25 games , we will be a top 25 team all year , we will make a deep run in the tourney , we will beat Syracuse , we will make the nation respect us , we will bring back college basketball to the greatest city in the world .

5 Nba players? I'd say right now the only one who you can say will play in the NBA is Sampson. Who else? Sanchez has never played a Div 1 game how can you call him an NBA player because he scored 10 pts a game at Monroe? Jordan? He hasn't played a COLLEGE game yet. D ? Great college player but NBA? Who else?

Obekpa will get drafted and make a roster. He has a rare skill, and still has upside. Sampson should make a roster, too. D Lo is a long shot, unless he improves his range and consistency. NBA teams love athletes. They may accept a trade off if the player can flat out shoot the ball. That's not D Lo. he is a scorer of the type that played in the league 25 years ago. Never saw Rysheed other than on Youtube, so can't say. Pointer is likely to fall into the abyss-size wise a NBA 2 without the skills of a 2. Consider DJ. Less athletic than Dom but a better handle, more consistent, a better range and a more diverse skill set overall. I know I said the NBA scouts love athletes, but a 6/5 college swingman with limited range and moves does not fit the mold of NBA players. Sanchez? Let's watch him play division 1 first, but the logic says that if he had coveted NBA skills, he would be there already. Or maybe he is wiser than that, and really wanted to live the college experience and the desire to showcase his skills.

So 2 maybe 3-- saying 5 is being a homer.

Sheed ,CO, possibly Sanchez.Harrison if Whitehead pops for us he will be a future NBA player, possibly Branch and Dom.

Bingo. Sanchez has no realistic shot.

I really don't like talking about NBA potential, so thinking about responding to this kind of stuff, I wish I could retract it. The reason is, first off, these guys have a long way to go to in their college careers, and haven't even gotten a taste of the big dance, no less anything beyond college.

Rather than talk about their potential as prospective NBA players, let's just focus on this year. I'm not as high as some of you are, but I'll say this, and said it last year and the year before that, and even the year before that (Lavin's first year). I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of watching these guys even if they don't make the dance. I think that is within reach, and yea, they are a much deeper bunch, and the potential that Jordan and even Sanchez bring is exciting. Let's just leave it at that - go buy your tickets now, because we are going to see some very good games.

These must be great times if we are bemoaning the fact we may only have 3 players make the NBA. Not just drafted, but make the league. In Lavin's 4th year, one player had a few moments in the league, another could be a mainstay, and maybe three more after year 4 or 5. I'll take that any day.

Earl Watson came to an sju practice last year and said that Sanchez is an NBA player now obv his word doesn't mean anything but we will see . Jakar is obvious. Now Chris obekpa will def be an NBA player . Lets say he stays another 2 years after his soph season he has all that time plus this year to work on his offense . Obekpa's defense alone is going to have NBA scouts high on him and his defense will certainly get him into the NBA. I've seen Rasheed Jordan play in person in one of his games there is no doubt he is NBA player he has the size , athleticism , vision , break down ability to be an NBA guard . He has 4 years to work on his game and that's even if he stays that long . Sir Dom is a terrific defender and he had NBA athleticism and size . He can handle the ball if need be but is more of. Slasher . Is weakness is his jump shot but again he has two years left to work in his jump shot . There goes your 5 NBA player . Now besides Sanchez , I'm not saying everyone will come out in this outrageously deep draft but one day they will be pros and were gonna look back and say this 2013-2014 had 4-5 pros on the team .

Lol that is very true . I have watched sheed in person he will be a NBA player one day . Good points on Dom but if he can work on that jump shot in these next 2 years he has a shot . Regardless you are my fellow johnnie were gonna bring back college basketball back to New York . We are gonna be a must watch team , it's gonna be show time .

Sup fellas , it's funny how you guys kept telling me " stop saying we have 5 NBA players on the roster " Ron artest told the media today that we have 6 NBA players on the roster . Check it outhttp://zagsblog.com/articles/metta-world-peace-unsure-what-league-st-johns-is-in/
Now of course his word doesn't mean much but this is coming from an NBA player who has been in the league for 14 years and knows an NBA player when he sees one . Either way were going deep into the tourney this year.

The Syracuse game slogan can be win one for World Peace!

No, it just means you are slightly less crazy than Ron Artest :)

First of all, he said we have six "pros." He said nothing of the NBA players. Secondly, Ron Artest is not the guy you want to seconding your opiniongs. We do not have five or six or FOUR NBA players on this team. You are just being a homer.

Artest also had no clue at the time that Darryl Hill was on the team, so not sure how in tune he's been with the program.

In a Zags article, Melo said that Artest thought we played in the ACC lol...just to put that in perspective. Melo and Artest may attend the Cuse/SJU game by the way. Now THAT would look good to recruits!
