is this team really that much more improved

Malik's final eight team was also pretty good. I have lost a lot of my memory. Who else was on that team?

Billy Singleton, Jason Buchanan, Chuck Sproling, and Rob Werdann (along with Malik of course) were the starters.

I was with the Torch back then and went to the tourney. The most memorable game of all was the way they picked apart Ohio St.'s press. Big reason was Werdann's passing was so good that game. He put on a clinic for passing big men.

I think they beat Maryland in the tournament as well. Was that the same year?

They beat Northern Illinois in the first round and Texas in the second round. I remember watching the first round game during lunch while in high school.

Some of the key players were Jayson Williams & Matt Brust in year one; Boo Harvey, Billy Singleton and Rob Werdan in season two, if Jayson Williams hadn't gone done with an injury after 13 games this team could have done much more damage. In year three it was Jason Buchanan, Werdann and Singleton, year four it was Buchanan, Shawnelle Scott and Chuky Sprolling.

In one of those early round games (I think round 2), Chuck Sproling could not miss. He was something like 4-4 from 3-pt range, and hit another 2 or 3 shots with his toe on the line. That was his shining moment in a Redman uniform.

They beat Northern (or Southern) Illinois and Texas first two rounds in Dayton, Ohio. They beat Ohio State in Pontiac in the sweet 16 game, and then lost to Duke in the next game.

You are confusing Maryland game in 1999 with the Artest/Barkley team.

This s the most talent and experience we have had since 1986.

Do you think that this team has more talent than the 1998-99 team (Ron Artest, Reggie Jessie, Lavor Postell, Tyrone Grant, Bootsy Thornton and Erick Barkley)?

If I may-- NO.

I agree the Artest team was more talented, Ron, Lavor, Erick all played meaningful time in the NBA..Barkley was the best SJU guard since Mark Jackson and, no one has come close since,or now.

This team would have to get to the Elite 8 to equal the Artest team.. That's a stretch right now.

Exactly what I was thinking. That team hammered Indiana, and Maryland in the tourney and was a basket or two away from the Final 4. Ronnie, Postell, Bootsy, Barkley very talented

Much more than talent alone, that Artest team played the best team ball of any SJU team perhaps since and including the final four team. The chemistry and ball movement was tremendous. much better than the sum of their parts/.

Loved that team! My favorite team since I've been a Johnnies fan. I was around and vividly remember the '84-'85 Final Four team, but there is was just something about that '98-'99 team.

I became a fan of St. John's that year when we lost to duke in OT, although I didn't see the game. The first time I ever saw them play was the elite 8 game vs Ohio state. I was 9 years old and became hooked for life, off a loss! The name Scoonie Pen has forever been burned into my memory.

Just curious, anyone know how high we climed in the poles that year?

Might have been. When you start going back that far, all the games kind of run together. Plus, I was only 8 years old at the time, but I remember that team pretty well.

You may disagree, and , you have a good case. These guys have not done a thing yet but you might agree that, while that team produced one all league pro, this team has as many as four players who have great potential to play pro ball for a living. Also, it's a very good bet that Jordan will be as good as Eric in Eric's only year and Orlando is a more experienced, bigger Tyrone. We're really loaded this year. If Hooper can shoot in traffic and with our brand new muscle and inside game we can be a top team. At the very least, I can hope so; but, all the stars are now aligned for a super team. Barring injuries we will be back in business this season.

Slight correction, oldfan. Every kid on the roster has the potential to play pro ball somewhere. There are 5 potential NBA players on the roster. Orlando (based on rumor---I haven't seen him play yet), Jakarr, CO, Rysheed and Sir'Dom (imo).

I know the mystery and some quotes add to the Sanchez hype, but I don't think he has a chance to play in the NBA outside of summer ball. He's a little bit of a plodder and he will be 25. He also doesn't really have a true position. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge Sanchez fan and I think he'll really help this team, but the NBA draft is all about length, athleticism, and potential.

I believe the '98-'99 team was as high as #7 in the polls.

EDIT: The highest ranking was #8, per the AP poll. But I thought they were as high as #7. Maybe, they were ranked #7 in the Coaches' Poll.

I tend to agree with you, although the Mullin years were all incredible. The photo on my Avatar, with Billy Goodwin sitting on the rim, enjoying one of the greatest parties even seen on the hardwoods at MSG as fans flooded the court was an incredible moment. But that 98-99 team was so damned unselfish. Grant would get the ball in the lane, have complete license to shoot, and instead dish it to Bootsy for an uncontested layup as he drew in the defense. Awesome team to watch.

You could be on to something about this team having more pro talent.
But Orlando isn't Tyrone. He might be better, but they're different players. The inside game isn't going to be strength. Primo plays as a face up swingman almost. Jakarr is a mid range jump shooter, or tip in threat, but not a post presence. And Chris O hasn't shown us much on the offensive end.

Our guards need to carry the load offensively. Not surprisngly, that's the norm in the college game. And I think D'angelo, Branch, and Jordan can do that.

Unselfish and fundamentally sound for the most part. They could rebound and had a plethora of guys who could handle the ball.

Very, fun to watch.

94-95
Felipe Lopez
Zendon Hamilton
James Scott
Charles Minlend
Rowan Barrett
Roshwon McLeod

That's a lot of talent too.

No point guard though. Plus, Hamilton was more of an oversized 4, then a true 5, IMO.

I always said that, if Lopez and Hamilton got to play with Erick Barkley, we would have gone to the Final Four. But, the years just didn't line up (Barkley prepped for what was Felipe and Zendon's senior year, but that year also is what likely made Barkley so ready to step in as a freshman).

Remember being on a plane with Felipe when he was in high school. I thought he was going to be the next Jordan.
