Is There One Recruit?

Let's face it. If the Big East was a cruise ship, we are in steerage. Villanove is in the Royal Suite, and X, Creighton and Butler are in Junior Suites. You need at least a high deck ocean view balcony to make the dance. At best, even with budding stars in the back court, we will end the season in an inside cabin. Next year, maybe Clark and Simon get us a porthole so we can get a view of the ocean. So we are looking at 2018-2019 to make a push to for March Madness.

Best case scenario is a very strong back court: juniors Lovett and Ponds, and seniors Simon and Ellison. More likely, if you read the tea leaves, it's Ponds, Simon, Ellison and maybe Luther Muhammad. The problem is I'm still not seeing a NCAA quality front court.

So the question I have is there any one recruit that we actually have a good chance at that will make an immediate, and significant impact beginning in 2018? Seems like it has to be a C or PF that can rebound, defend a pf or center, and score. There will be few freshman in any season that can fit the bill. Any thoughts out there?

Would think your prognosis is correct & 2018-2019 could possibly be the NCAA push year. I also agree with our guards being the core of the team. Besides Clark & Owens, serviceable guys on interior, the need to add to that is glaring. I guess landing Naz Reid18 would help, but doubt he would have an immediate big impact. Also, it is certainly not a lock they get him. I guess Matt will have to go transfer or Juco route for big bodies.

So you're going to ignore the 7'2 top 50 recruit Zach Brown?

Also, we may need to look at a future without ponds. His Instagram post and videos are showing a kid who is getting frustrated.

I'll believe Brown when I see him here.

Greg McDermott has played the transfer game with great results. Three of Creighton's starters are transfers. May be the way we have to go to get to where we want to be.

Examples of these posts? Not saying you are reading it wrong; just want to see it for myself.

You referring to this with a "Trust the Process ? " with a question mark ?

Maybe just a joke... kinda hard to read into one liners IMO.

I love Shamorie but I am not sure what he has to complain about. Not many programs where he would be getting the playing time and exposure he is here and winning big as a freshman.

Glad he removed it. Now maybe some of you guys will think twice too. But he is probably more mature at 18 than most of us...

if any recruit/player seems to have an attitude that needs adjusting , i suggest a guy who is now a huge fan of us on twitter....oh and btw the way also a johnnie warrior who went through some very tough times here but never gave up on himself and US. His name....D'Angelo Harrison..btw 3rd all time scorer at SJU

On page 2 of this thread, and the only name offered, and in an iffy sense, is Naz Reid. That means we need to get involved with some talented bigs, and do so in a hurry. I haven't seen Naz play except on highlight reels, but I think he puts us over the top if, and only if, Zach Brown makes it here and can be a major factor by his sophomore year.

When you see the top teams, you start to realize how far away we really are. I couldn't even keep up with who was scoring against us in the Xavier game. They just kept rolling out players that we couldn't defend. So we are left with hoping Lovett and Ponds are together in year 4 of the rebuild (iffy), needing Zach Brown to be eligible and very good (very iffy), and then Naz and Luther signing (no small feat). I'm getting depressed thinking about it. Someone needs to bring good news about a few transfers we are in line for, or some other solution.

Kid is probably frustrated and who could blame him. He doesn't like losing and I'm glad he doesnt. Unfortunately, people like us hang on every word these teenagers say to try to decipher tea leaves. This underscores why I wouldn't pay much credence to the rumors about lovett leaving. As I've posted before, things change day-to-day with these kids. Let's enjoy the season and root the team on. Kudos to the staff for planning for contingencies. What will be will be in the off-season. I suspect decisions will be influenced, at least in part, by success of team this year and future prospects next year.

Kid is 6'0 150 pounds, love him....hope he stays but if he's unhappy and wants to bolt, where is he going? Overseas? NBA d league? Cmon

I would think we should be able to sign a quality big man or two in the transfer market. Assuming ponds and lovett come back, Owens continues to improve, and Clark and Simon are solid, I think we're one solid big away from being very competitive. Finding a solid fifth year transfer big will be key.

THATS WHAT WE PAY THE STAFF THE BIG BUCKS FOR so far eye for talent eludes them

That IS what the staff is paid for but your statement is off base. This team has talent, and much more talent than last year. The game by game swings of the fan base is crazy. Last week, Williams and Owens were great finds. Now we have no talent.

This is an incremental process and while we are antsy and see only small steps forward, we are moving forward. A loss of Lovett would be a setback. But, I have confidence in this staff that given time we will emerge from our decades-long nightmare and be competitive on a regular basis again. It ain't easy, and we see that. It is highly competitive for players. But our staff has found good talent under very difficult circumstances. Bigs are important and hopefully that is the focus of recruiting efforts now. Some of the young guys (Freud in particular) will be better as the years go on, but they need time. Yakwe is the one guy I can't figure, as he has regressed. He is raw but athletic. He would be much better to be channeling his efforts to rebounding ad real defense (not just blocks).

The fan base needs to settle down and understand that the rebuild is a process and will take time. It may be that we will never return to the days where we make the tourney most of 20 straight years. It is a different era. But, given time and patience (I know), a consistently competitive program can emerge.

Yes well, ask a stupid question get a stupid answer.

Is there one player who can come in and immediately turn around the direction of a program that's been in the toilet since 2002? Gosh, well no there isn't. There's barely a player in the country who can do that for a program in the country and if there were he'd be going to Kentucky or DooK or Kansas. And even those programs like Kentucky and DooK and Kansas that regularly land top recruits land them in two and threes a year. That's why they're successful: because they have a pipeline of quality players comprising a balanced roster of skilled under and upper classmen. Whereas we have two pretty good freshmen and a roster that was otherwise cobbled together at the last minute, most of whom have a variety of flaws rather than skills. There's no cure for that except time.

Sorry if that makes you depressed. Maybe go lie down on the couch and sob for a couple of years, I promise I'll wake you.
