Is Obekpa Next? No! He's staying!

We differ significantly. I'm not taking recruiting into account.
1. Wright
2. Cooley
3. Mack
4. McDermott
5. Thompson
6. Buzz
7. Willard
8. Lavin
9. Butler
10. Purnell

With all due respect SJUalum98, it is impossible to leave recruiting out when rating a college coaches performance. As the sharks would say, for that reason, Lavin would be third on my list (with the possibility of moving up with a big 2015 class)

Why are y'all saying Cooley isn't as good as lavin??? If lav had that prov team this year they win ten games. Cooley takes that team and wins a big east championship. Cooley is so much better

Exactly! What more does Cooley have to do to get some respect? Let's not forget, he lost Brandon Austin and Daniel Dingle in November. Everyone thought they were dead......except, he went on to win the Big East Tournament.

Guy is so much better than Lavin. Also a very hard-working recruiter.

Bullock, not Dingle. Dingle plays for UMass.

Yes, right......Rodney Bullock. Thanks!

It continues to amaze me how blind people can be to the abilities of Lavin as a coach. The 5 game losing streak was the most telling part of the season and of his abilities as a coach. The team cannot play effective defense, they cannot shoot, they do not rebound effectively, they have no plan on offense, the cannot even defend in bound plays under the basket...etc. all of the above were more than evident throughout the losing streak and throughout the season. If he was such a great recruiter.....how come we do not have one consistent shooter on the team ??? This team goes for minutes without being able to score in every game. Defense is a direct result of coaching...their defense is deplorable. Rebounding is learned through coaching.....an offenseive game plan is coached...not on this team. This team cannot even shoot foul shots....did anyone watch UConn and see how well they shoot foul shots ???? Their coach insisted they practiced foul shooting every day. If Lavin cannot recruit effectively, and no one can tell me he has ever recruited good shooters...if he cannot coach defense or offense....if he cannot make strategic changes during a game...why would anyone want him to continue ad coach ???

Not a Lavin fan, but the constant recitation of criticisms serves no purpose. Let's support him and the team this season. If he gets a solid 14 class & an outstanding 15 group and gets the team to the Dance this season, I can live with that. Short of that, I trust his performance will be judged fairly and critically. To me this is a critical year for Lav to demonstrate the program is on solid footing. To beat the dead horse daily is senseless.

Well said, Paul! If I knew how to place the "thumbs up" icons, I'd give you two of them for this post.

Agreed. He's not going anywhere so there's no reason to keep talking about it as that doesn't help the program at all. He's got his limitations for sure but he's also someone we should be rooting for with everything he has gone through.

And if you look at the numbers we were actually at the top of the big east in almost every defensive category other than rebounding. We held the best scoring team in the conference (Creighton) in the 60s twice so some of this is pure nonsense.

All those deficiencies and we finished tied for 3rd in the conference., wow!

Wow. I am, of course, with Mantle on this one. I only wish I had the charisma of Steve Lavin. He is truly amazing. There is actually a contingent that feel he is a poor coach, yet believe it is not possible to find anyone better. Now THAT, Mantle, is some STRONG kool aid!

No. It's that he is under contract and not going anywhere, so why wouldn't we root for someone to do well on the recruiting trail and have success as our coach instead of saying the same BS on every frikkin thread like you do. You are a cancer to this board and I hope Paul finally bans you. Happy Easter

you post as if that's an accomplishment

Mantle was spot-on...lavin's recruiting abilities are overrated on this board. Im behind the coach, but he should be gone if the team does not at least make the tournament this season.

Stupid me. I come here to read about Obekpa not leaving and it's turned into another Lavin pissing contest. How many pages do I have to go back to to read about the Obekpa news?

33. Give or take a few pages by the time you read this.

We currently have nine scholarship players for next year? Am I missing anyone?

Jordan
Harrison
Greene
Branch
Pointer
Balamou
Jones
De Larosa
Obekpa

I assume Joey D is not getting a scholly? Lipscomb either?
Even if they did it would be in name only, not like they were recruited kids. Would help them financially but wouldn't exactly raise our talent level.
