Interior Presence

I never understood this...when we have 2 6'8 guys and 2 6'9 guys, and people say "we aren't that big"...how much bigger can you get? I mean my god it's not like some people are 8 ft tall lol. At the very most a player on another team can be 1-2 inches taller...is it really that big a deal? It's likely that our 6'8 and 6'9 players are more athletic and quick than say a 7'0 guy. I just don't see how we are still considered small with 6'8 and 6'9 players. It's not like other BE teams are signing 8 and 9 footers. They would be lucky to have a guy who is over 6'9. I mean the difference between someone who's 5'11 and 6'0 is 1 hair. So why would it be any different between like 6'9 and 6'10?

Not to mention that our guys always seem to turn out 1-2 inches shorter then they're suppossed to be.

But I do agree with most of our fans that "size" doesn't just mean a measurement from head to toe. It means what you bring to the game in terms of anticipation, positioning, and wingspan unless you can present a freakish situation like we did with CuJo, who scared the bejesus out of Notre Dame simply by showing up. I'll never forget that game.

Neither will Brey as Cujo had a career game that he never ever came close to before or after.

Concerning the wish that we had a guy over 6'10" or 6'11". I would suggest that by the spring of next year, we will
have a guy that height and he will be CO.

Remember that these are kids and are still growing.

Didn't Moe grow 2 inches last summer from 6'6 to 6'8.

Quite frankly I don't think Obekpa and Balamou are done growing. You can tell by their frames.

That happens at every school in the country

Well, remembering that the target is to win an NCAA Championship, then Iwould think Title Team Rosters is what we need to be comparing ourselves to - not simply "other D-1 teams".

2012: Kentucky: Anthony Davis 6'10 (per KY Roster)
2011: UCONN: Oriaki 6'9, Okandwu 7'0, Wolfe 7'1, Bradley 6'10
2010: Duke: Zoubek 7'1, Plumlee 6'10, Plumlee 6'10
2009: UNC: Deon Thompson 6'8, Tyler Zeller 7'0
2008: Kansas: Sasha Kaun 6'11, Cole Aldrich 6'11
2007: Florida: Joakim Noah 6'11, Al Horford 6'10
2006: Florida: Joakim Noah 6'11, Al Horford 6'10
2005: UNC: Sean May 6'8, Damion Grant 6'11
2004: UCONN: Emeka Okafor 6'10, Hilton Armstrong 6'11
2003: Syracuse: Craig Forth 7'0
2002: Maryland: Lonny Baxter 6'8, Chris Wilcox 6'10
2001: Duke: Carlos Boozer 6'9, Casey Sanders 6'11
2000: Michigan State: Mike Chappell 6'9, Aloysius Anagonye 6'8
1999: UCONN: Jake Voskuhl 6'11, souleymane Wane 6'11
1998: Kentucky: Nazr Mohammad 6'10, Jamal Magliore 6'10
1997: Arizona: AJ Bramlett 6'11, Donnell Harris 6'11
1996: Kentucky: Nazr Mohammad 6'10, Mark Pope 6'10
1995: UCLA: George Zidek 7'0, omm'A Givens 6'11, Ike Nwankwo 6'11

You CAN win a title with a short starting post, but it's rare - and there's almost always a skyscrper on the bench for those inevitable matchup problems were all you really need is BIG on the floor.

Steve Lavin knows this - so I don't think he's done with only 6'8 and 6'9 up front.

His record:

1997: Jelani McCoy 6'10, JR Henderson 6'8
1998: Jelani McCoy 6'10, Travis Reed 6'8
1999: 6'11 Dan Gadzuric, 6'11 Jerome Moiso
2000: 6'11 Dan Gadzuric, 6'11 Jerome Moiso
2001: 6'11 Dan Gadzuric, 6'10 John Hoffart
2002: 6'11 Dan Gadzuric, 6'10 John Hoffart
2003: 7'0 Ryan Hollins, 6'11 Michael Fey

FYI - of that group, McCoy, Henderson, Gadzuric, Moiso, and Hollis all made the NBA, Fey and Reed were both NBDL players. Reed went on to be a Euro STAR. Hoffart was a deep bench reserve, but did save at least two games just by being BIG (6'10 270) and SMART (3.9 GPA) when Gadzuric got into foul trouble and the particular matchups didn't allow the team to go "small". Lavs had been recruiting (for 2 years) former St. Anthony's center 7'0 Josh Moore - who was a real academic question mark, so as a hedge, Lav's also accepted Hoffart as a transfer fromthe Cal Poly San Louis Obispo Banana Slugs :) Good move, as Moore never did qualify (tho he did eventually make the Clippers roster!).....

I also do not think CO is finished growing. I think your looking @ 6 10 when seasonj starts. Time will tell.

Was the forward opposite Erickson smaller than 6'5" which I think was Slaughter's height? But I meant on the roster, not starters, as CRG talked about situational matchups that required length, even in reserve.

And the biggest player on the Bruin 1964 NC roster was?

You want to compare with a 48 year old roster????

Okay - in '64 the tallest was Vaugh Hoffman at 6'7. Doug McIntosh was also listed at 6'7, but he was a shade shorter than Hoffman. Starting Center Fred Slaughter was said to be 6'5jand was nearly 2 inches shorter than Vaughn and Doug. In the title game, due to the type of size mismatch I referenced above, Doug had to come of the bench and play 30 minutes, anchoring the first national title by controlling the boards with 11 rebounds. Slaugher was #35, Doug was #32, Vaughn #34.

Since colleges like to measure their players with sneakers on, and with new sneakers, Big Chris may well be 6'9 1/2 by November!! LMAO!!!! In seriousness, given his age, I can see him growing to 6'10 by his Soph year.

Size is a luxury to me. Give me Anthony Glover a guy who was always undersized but had the will to win any day of the week. And we are now a big team IMO. Teams who are lucky enough to have 6'11 or 7 footers normally are handcuffed because those guys have no skill and basically stink. Anthony Davis's don't grow on trees.

This is true. A few years ago, we all remember DeJuan Blair giving up 6 inches or so to Thabeet, but dominating him each time they played. Blair was certainly a strong guy, which helps, but the height disadvantage didn't affect his play. I think we're fine with our height, and glad that we have a few guys at that size to keep our opponents honest.

Agree Think around 65 our tallest starter was Sonny Dove and we were ranked as high as. that yr

Thanks, CRG- must be a minor masochistic phase as I was at NYU, pre-season #1 with Kramer, Hairston, McKenzie, Bennett, Boose, Patton and as of the day before the season minus their one true point guard, Neil O'Neill, ruled academically ineligible. They went on to lose 10 games including the NIT consolation to Army under Bob Knight. I think the Bruins fared somewhat better in '64.

One of the more underrated players - Happy Hairston. Can you imagine what he could earn TODAY with 11 year career averages of 15 pts and 10 1/2 rebounds a game? The amazing thing to me as a Lake fan, was that his 4 BEST rebounding seasons were his LAST 4 years - 13.1 rebs in his 8th year, 13.2 rebs in his 9th year, 13.5 in his 10th year, and 12. 8 in his 11th. And the MOST remarkable thing - those 8th and 9th seasons when he was getting 13.1 and 13.2, he was playing alongside Wilt Chamberlain, who was grabbing 19.2 and 18.6!!

Hap put ups 22.5 pts and 12.8 rebs for NYU that 1964 season....

Nice guy - his Foundation for KIds had their offices in the same building I worked in back in the mid 80s (the Watt Tower at 300 Grand Ave. in downtown LA...I was on the 20th floor, I think he was on the 26th. And Pat Haden was with the Law Firm on the 30th floor - so we'd talk sports for like 2 minutes in the elevator just about every day....Hap passed WAY too young at 58....

I remember that team. Weren't they ranked #2

Remember how well Villanova did when they had their four guard offense and the only inside player thay really had was Dante Cunningham at 6'8. Also, look how well Missouri did this past season with Kim English 6'6 210 as their power forward and Ricardo Ratliff 6'9 at Center. Then they had the three guards The Pressey brothers and Marcus Denmon. It comes down to talent and we have plenty of that now and with this coaching staff this could be a very dangerous team come March. If by chance we do luck out and get Chandler sky's the limit.

Hey, remember how well Boston did with that 6'9 215 lb center Bill Russell and 6'7 210 PF Baily Howell vs. teams like Philly and their 7'1 265 lb center Wilt Chamberlain and 6'9 240 lb PF Luke Jackson?
