Ideal Starting Lineup

It's not who starts the game....it's who finishes. God's Gift started, yes. But he ended up only playing 8minutes. Lavin really only played 7 players yesterday, and I have no problem with some other guys getting some minutes here and there.

The News said Gift started to match up with Stainback, but we came out in a 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone for most of the half. Anybody think Jordan would have been as effective at the point of that zone as Sampson, and much more of an option at the offensive end than Gift?

And why did Lavin wait so long to get Jordan into the game?

They jumped out to a huge lead, why are you questioning that aspect of the game? Everything else is fair game, but you can't knock the starting lineup when we enjoyed our best start of the season.

Even DLo said in postgame quotes that they should have gotten out to a bigger advantage. I'm simply stating that Jordan would have been as effective in the top of the zone as Karr and much more effective on the offensive end. And why did Lavin put in Jordan after Branch?

Wouldn't be shocked if something happened with Jordan. Too bad our 'beat' writers never ask challenging questions.

Forget Jordan! What happened with Obekpa? Where is the NBA level Sanchez? What has happened to the ROY? WTF is up with the Balamou activation? Why doesn't Lavin buy bifocal eyeglasses? Why is Tony Chiles eating future recruits? Why can't Whitesell use a hair gel? These are the challenging questions!!!

I agree with the OP.

D Lo

Obekpa
Sampson
Sanchez

let a unit gel. Too many rotations, and we're throwing in guys who are no threat. I, like many, are baffled by the Balamou thing

Starting 5.

Branch
Harrison
Dom
Sampson
Obekpa

There, I said it.
That should have been the starting lineup from day 1. Start an actual PG, SG, SF, PF, and C. Its a novel idea, but maybe start the game with everyone playing the position they actually belong at. After that, Sanchez and Jordan should each get the equivalent of starters mins, 20+, but come off the bench initially.
Give Greene the rest of the mins, and use GG less than 5min a night. The end.

Starting 5

Jordan
Harrison
Greene
Sanchez
Obekpa

I would also play 8 deep. Sampson Dom and Branch. Sampson and Sanchez would be interchangeable. But I like his agressiveness for the "Second unit" . With Branch or Jordan on the floor at all times. Gods Gift and Felix would play in blowouts or if we had alot of foul trouble.

The starting lineup is tricky. Although I will say w certainty Gift or Balamou should not be in it. Jorden, DLO, Dom or Greene, Sampson, Sanchez or CO.

To me, more important than the starting lineup is the distribution of minutes. That said, in no way do I endorse changing the starting lineup each game or starting second periods with same initial group. Branch, v. Xavier having three assists, but only five minutes of play, makes no sense. He deserves a decent and consistent amount of time. Staff's distribution of time, fouls aside, seems impulse driven, not reflective of the best combinations to help us succeed.

Sounds simple enough in most programs! Impulse driven is a good description of what Lavin has been doing and I suspect there are some medication issues that have unbalanced his thinking. It may sound stupid but he has not been on an even keel this season. How, on God's earth, can one explain the starting of Hooper or Balamou (his activation) and the benching of his guards? How do you explain Obekpa becoming more like God's Gift? Sampson playing like a moron auditioning for the NBA, etc.
WTF is going on here??? LOL!

Think of it this way. In my opinion, Harrison has proved he deserves to start. Sampson earned it from last season. That's it. After that Jordan is coming on strong and with his immense talent should be a starter. Sanchez? At times he looks like the real deal, and at other times the next coming of Justin Burrell. Pointer? Sometimes he looks amazing, others amazingly non-productive. Obekpa? Blocking 4 shots per game when you only get 5 rebounds, zero assists, and no points doesn't earn you starter's minutes. Greene? If it weren't for Jordan, he is playing for the most part like he is healthier than last year, but should get bumped in favor of Jordan. GG? His game has receded faster than his hairline. Max/Marco? perhaps if we are playing horse. Branch? If Jordan weren't here, he'd be the starting point, and a solid one at that - but he doesn't do enough to push him into the starting lineup with Jordan on the floor.

In essence we have three proven starters, and everyone else should be working their butts off to prove themselves. They haven't so this is why we have a musical chairs starting lineup

if obekpa played longer, he'd have more rebounds. I agree about sanchez. i like the way Jordan attacks and agree with DLo and Sampson, although sometimes Sampson disappears.

Same lineup I had, this is the best line up to start with IMO. Sampson should be fine at the three, it should help with rebounding, and Jordan and Harrison are great on the floor together.r

Actually, I think that we should send Obekpa to Dennis Rodman's rebounding camp in North Korea. They need taller campers then their chubby little leader, but maybe something would rub off. With such limited offensive production, Obekpa needs to bring a blue collar mentality to sweeping and attacking the boards on both ends. Since he shouldn't be involved as an offensive option at this point if he focused on positioning for rebounds on offense, he could be a terror. On defense, I'd be okay with 1/3 less blocks and 9-10 rebounds a game, but so would everyone else. For now Sanchez should start, and probably Pointer also, but unless those guys earn it, we aren't going very far this year.

Please up my kharma. It's shameless but I really deserve better.

This is a bobreesque post. Maybe we could all do with some self-medicating. Would make the games more watchable and the posts more sensical.

Watching the games from Denver is cost prohibitive.

@NYPost_Brazille: St. John's could utilize same starting 5 for Georgetown, but Steve Lavin not certain. #sjubb

I just knew it was a mistake to play in Europe over the summer and not Asia because if we had a longer flight we'd have this roster figured out by now

It is comical at this point :) , I will pay any amount of money to sit in on one of our practices. Don't we scrimmage against each other? The game is not the greatest time to be sorting out lineups, it should be done in practice.

Guess this is why Lav never wears a tie.
