Hurley Brothers

:sob:
Ewwww, the Hurley brothers.

If we are going to spend that kind of money again, go for Ben Howland. The team will be good next year even with so-so talent. But I am pretty confident he will get some players here too.

Don't want Ben Howland

Could you please explain why ?
The guy had great success at all 3 division 1 teams he coached.

This may help. In addition to being another west coast guy, his style of play is considered boring by many fans. I think he is an excellent coach but has no personality.

From 2008—the Bruins last Final Four appearance—through 2012, at least 11 players left the UCLA program. After 2008, UCLA did not advance past the first weekend of the NCAA tourney, and did not qualify for the tournament in 2010 and 2012

I guess it's too much to ask for us to hold this off for a week and enjoy would be our first tournament win this century? Or at least support the seniors who deserve that and more?

We're all upset, but Obekpa's decision was personal, selfish, and it had nothing to do with Lavin no matter how hard you want to try to make that connection. The irony is you guys want to replace Lavin now with a guy who had a drinking/drug problem as a player.

Marillac, I agree with you on this. We are all pissed at Obekpa right now. And a lot of us (including myself) are pissed at Lavin for basically letting the inmates run the asylum during his tenure here. But at the end of the day, St. John's is in the tournament and by the looks of it, this is going to be it for awhile. So let's try to enjoy the week and maybe pull off a nice win against a good San Diego St. team.

I've heard some posters say the coach will be gone at year's end. I've heard some posters say the coach will be given an extension at year's end. I have no clue what to believe anymore, so I'm not even going to bother. That's a decision that Monasch (maybe?) and Gempesaw will probably make in the next 2 weeks or so. So let's focus on this year's group of seniors and hope they notch a win in the tourney.

about 2 guys that have yet to accomplish anything at the highest level of college basketball is, ....

"Bobby Hurley was a point guard at Duke University from 1989-93, a 1st Team All American in '93, he led the Blue Devils to four consecutive Final Fours, and won two National Championships. He was the 7th pick in the 1993 NBA draft."

Excellent point as usual. Tell me, in your mind who qualifies as having accomplished something at the highest levels of college basketball besides Wooden and Walton? Does Dean Smith make the cut?

Not a good point and nothing whatsoever to do with projecting coaching success. ZERO!
Some of you are too consumed by anger today over Chris Obekpa to be cogent about anything regarding SJU.
Walton? He coached where??? With your line of "logic" coach K should have been a failure. Brad Stevens, fuggeta about it! Bill Self? He was a star where??
Finally, when did Bobby Hurley become a better candidate than Danny? Just because Buffalo is a 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament?
St. John's is a 9 seed so a group of kids undermanned and slated for the NIT by most here get crapped on by some because Lavin imposed discipline at an inopportune time?
Grow up old men!

I haven't been on the forum since earlier today, and this is the first page I clicked on. Your last quote should ring like someone blasted a shotgun within earshot. But it'll fall on deaf ears.

I believe some of y'all truly dislike and even hate a man personally, and y'all don't even know him on that level. There is too much vitriol, asininity, causticity, and moving of the goal posts to believe some of y'all just dislike Lavin as a coach.

I truly wonder about the maturity of some on here.

Two weeks ago many of us were willing to table the coach talk and just focus most of the theads on the team's play in the court.
Honestly, I know I had every intention of that.

But you guys need to admit that these dramatic headlines basically write thrmselves, blown out by nova, embarrassed in the big east tourny, starting center in elidgible for the ncaas.
It's not all the coach's fault, but since he was on the proverbial "hot seat" beforehand, surely you can understand why people are having a tough time not talking about the coach?

I really wanted to just enjoy the post season, but you can't make this up.

Nah, you can't make this stuff up. But if you wanna use the "dark cloud" over the program to steal your enjoyment for the NCAA tournament, then allow it. If not, then enjoy it. Maher is on the "dark side," but decided to make the trip to Charlotte this week. Anything is blown out of proportion, if it even remotely paints Lavin in a bad light to some of y'all. Of course, he deserves blame with several things, but some of this stuff mentioned on here and stated ad nauseam is quite comical and kinda sad, as well.

It's gonna be interesting when or if there is a new coach before some folks either quickly turn on the new guy or use Lavin as a crutch 4 or 5 years down the road. I'll bet it'll be the same one's who ridicule other posters when they use Norm's shortcomings when it comes to Lavin's mishaps. I know who y'all are, too.

As noted frequently, have not been Lavin fan for a long time. That said, my focus is on winning the next one. After we are eliminated, hopefully sensible decision makers will make the contract choice they feel is appropriate. Life will go on & I will support it. After all, going back to Tony Jackson days as a kid, I am clearly addicted to my Johnnies. Beat SD State!

I meant to say that I had no intention of talking about the coaching staff, or the extension or any of that once we got close to the postseason. But then all these things come up, and it's hard not to. Like I said, you can't make this stuff up haha. A series of ridiculous events

You're absolutely right about enjoying these seniors though.

Alabama fired Anthony Grant before their NIT game. At least we are not that crass.
I think the sides are negotiating as we speak. I don't think the problem is that St. John's wants to fire Lavin as much as Lavin's camp making unrealistic demands. St. John's may be forced to take a position quickly as a result. Rumors of 5 years including next year have been heard but the conditions may force St. John's hand.

As much as I want to put all the crap aside and revel in our first NCAA appearance in 5 years, I'm having a really hard time blocking out the last two blow out losses-when the seniors seemed to have mailed it in-and the CO debacle. Heading down to AC for weekend on Thursday. Hopefully I'll have sufficiently medicated myself by Friday so that I can just kick back and enjoy the game(s?).

If it was me I'd meet unrealistic demands with " ok go coach your final year and then lets see " because as of right now unless he salvages the recruiting class then any leverage is going to go out the window with what could happen on the court next year.

Time for some realism on both sides of the contract

Except for buy out costs St. John's is in the driver's seat imo.
Agree about the recruiting side of the equation and had he closed out a couple of more players even with verbals things would be different but he is behind the 8 ball. Since last year I've felt his recruiting would dictate his future and I love playing devils advocate but if we are down two years in a row in recruiting he will have an uphill job....keeping his job.
The new president is an economist and will demand a bigger return than Lavin's side can promise without some staff cuts.

Funny thing is you should have seen how angry I was yesterday on my Facebook.

I pretty much swore off all things st johns as soon as I heard the news. A couple of friends of mine throw a huge ncaa party at this place near my house every year for the entire 1st day of the tournament. So my friend texts me today so see what time I'm going to come thursday and I tell him I can only go for an hour or 2 because I have to get ready to leave for charlotte.

he says to me " i saw your post on Facebook yesterday and thought you gave up on sju ? "

I told him I did. For 5 hours :)

It's not all the coach's fault, but since he was on the proverbial "hot seat" beforehand, surely you can understand why people are having a tough time not talking about the coach?

I really wanted to just enjoy the post season, but you can't make this up.

Then, enjoy it!

Nah, you can't make this stuff up. But if you wanna use the "dark cloud" over the program to steal your enjoyment for the NCAA tournament, then allow it. If not, then enjoy it. Maher is on the "dark side," but decided to make the trip to Charlotte this week..

Most of us have the same addiction. As much as we knock the crap out of each other here this forum serves as support group for long suffering fans. Perhaps the members should contribute a few hundred dollars each to Paul to hire a redmen.com forum psychologist to ease the psychological effects of being aSt. John's fan.

Two weeks ago many of us were willing to table the coach talk and just focus most of the theads on the team's play in the court.
