Hurley Brothers

about 2 guys that have yet to accomplish anything at the highest level of college basketball is, ....

"Bobby Hurley was a point guard at Duke University from 1989-93, a 1st Team All American in '93, he led the Blue Devils to four consecutive Final Fours, and won two National Championships. He was the 7th pick in the 1993 NBA draft."

Excellent point as usual. Tell me, in your mind who qualifies as having accomplished something at the highest levels of college basketball besides Wooden and Walton? Does Dean Smith make the cut?

Come on, Desco. You know he was talking about coaching. You don't have to have been a great player to be a great coach. In fact, most of them weren't.

I went to the A10 Tournament on Friday. I really thought Danny was going to get ejected from the game. He was going nuts on the sideline. Think he got one Tech (announcer only said it was issued to RI bench). He has recruited some nice players to RI.

Bulletin: URI and Danny lost to Dayton.
This board would have complained about the players he recruited since most were 2 and 3 star players except for ED Mathews and Biruta, the biggest reason for his success at URI fell into his lap from the Rutgers shakeup. He could possibly recruit better on the bigger stage. Time will tell.

Yes, SJU fans will always find something to complain about. Jared Terrell is also a nice player for RI. Glad they lost today. I really enjoy watching the Dayton team play. IMO, Dayton would be a great place to catch a game someday.

Its not like we haven't been given much to complain about over the 15 years or so.
Exactly. Kudos to Dan Hurley for getting Rhody on positive track. came up short to another well coached team, but prospects are great for next season with another solid class coming in. If Matthews stays, they should dance in 16. To idiots who jump on folks praising another coach, relax. This has nothing to do with Steve Lavin.

Bobby also did a solid job obviously, Sons of good coaches like the Millers & Hurleys are well schooled & most often succeed.

Paultzman, you are a great source of breaking media chatter regarding St. John's but let's be crystal about something and that is that those "idiots" praising other coaches here on a St. John's fan forum are doing it to stick it to Steve Lavin and to those that try to stay positive and objective about his past and future. IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH STEVE LAVIN. By calling them idiots you are taking a page out of the Maven's playbook and you are above that.
URI and the Hurley boys in particular have zero to do with St. John's and the Big East. They have zero connection to St. John's. So why any interest in them if not to speculate if in their "rise" to fame, as defined by a few discontented St. John's fans, they could replace Steve Lavin as coach? Their meteoric rise is coming in their 40's. In contrast Steve Lavin was 32 when he was hired as head coach at the most storied program in college basketball history and by age 38 had taken his teams to 5 sweet 16's including a final 8. In short, in 10 years of full time coaching at the highest level, not URI not Buffalo, he will have taken his teams to 7 NCAA tourneys.
Not meaning to put you in the category of Baldi/Barksdale/Gonzo/Maven etc but it is selection Sunday and to have a thread here on a St. John's fan forum about 2 guys that have yet to accomplish anything at the highest level of college basketball is, in your wirds, idiotic.
Smart of you to recognize I am an independent thinker. I know you strive to be contrarian lately & get off with your attempt at humor photos, but frankly I will post how & when I want. I started thread yesterday knowing today is "sacred" because I found article potentially interesting to folks. You are right on my "idiots" reference, so I stand corrected on that. Not interested in a back & forth on this shit either.

I find the Hurley topic quite interesting and I wouldn't put myself in the Anti-Lavin at any cost camp.

But I find Bobby's rise even more impressive than Danny's and there is no other player in basketball that I hated more than Bobby. But I do think he is on the fast track and his age is no hindrance because he hasn't even been coaching long.

Ideally I'd like to win one this week and advance and even more importantly is for Lavin so salvage this recruiting class. He does that and I don't mind if he gets extension. But I still find the Hurley's interesting as far as coaching in general

I was referring to COACHING! COACHING, COACHING!
GOT IT!!!!!!!!

Lavin, no matter the spin, adulteration, or other embellishments took 7 out of 10 teams he has coached to the NCAAs. So far a combination of Hurleys has gone to one in 5 years combined.
When you want to make a stupid non-related point here at least understand what you are arguing against before mixing apples and oranges.

Bobby Hurley was one of the headiest ballplayers to ever lace up sneakers. He was a very good ballplayer in a great system headed by arguably the greatest college coach of all time. His Dad, who he played for, is one of the greatest high school coaches of all time. Certainly he's learned a thing or two under the tutelage of those two. In 2 years of coaching Buffalo, his teams have finished in first place both years and he has a winning % of .689. He has taken this year's Buffalo team to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, and as a 12 seed. Granted its a small coaching sample size, but its a successful one. Additionally he's local guy who I have no doubt would immediately make inroads with local high school and AAU coaches, especially those in NJ. Taking all of this in to account, I think he would make for a wonderful hire for this program in spite of his limited head coaching experience.

I agree.

My concern is that we will need to move fast and I am not sure we are capable of that. The program needs a complete makeover, meaning the following.......

1. Inform Lavin there will be no extension
2. Work on negotiating a buyout
3. Release the Athletic Director
4. Negotiate and sign Hurley
5. Hire a new Athletic Director

I feel like Hurley will have other offers. Hopefully our new Prez can be decisive and swift.

Hurley will be a hot commodity regardless of what he does in the tourney, but should he win a game or two he will become red-hot. Now that's not to say he'll jump at any offer. He's got most of his team back next year so his stock will continue to rise IMO if he sticks around for another year. Having said that, I think he would jump at the opportunity to coach at SJU.

Ewwww, the Hurley brothers.

If we are going to spend that kind of money again, go for Ben Howland. The team will be good next year even with so-so talent. But I am pretty confident he will get some players here too.

Not a good point and nothing whatsoever to do with projecting coaching success. ZERO!
Some of you are too consumed by anger today over Chris Obekpa to be cogent about anything regarding SJU.
Walton? He coached where??? With your line of "logic" coach K should have been a failure. Brad Stevens, fuggeta about it! Bill Self? He was a star where??
Finally, when did Bobby Hurley become a better candidate than Danny? Just because Buffalo is a 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament?
St. John's is a 9 seed so a group of kids undermanned and slated for the NIT by most here get crapped on by some because Lavin imposed discipline at an inopportune time?
Grow up old men!

Could you please explain why ?
The guy had great success at all 3 division 1 teams he coached.

I am aware of three division 1 teams he coached at and he had great success at each stop. I don't get it ????

I just watched the 30 for 30 I hate Christian Laettner. I hated him and Hurley was probably next. However what he has done at Buffalo has impressed me. If we decide to hire a new coach, I would not be disappointed if we hired him. I prefer him to his brother because he was the better player and think would be more successful at St. John's. Just a hunch.

I guess it's too much to ask for us to hold this off for a week and enjoy would be our first tournament win this century? Or at least support the seniors who deserve that and more?

We're all upset, but Obekpa's decision was personal, selfish, and it had nothing to do with Lavin no matter how hard you want to try to make that connection. The irony is you guys want to replace Lavin now with a guy who had a drinking/drug problem as a player.

Don't lump us all together. Not everyone wants to hire Bobby H.

I want the guy who just finished 9-23 at South Florida.
