Talk about the sky is falling, take a look at a thread posted on Holy Land of Hoops by a so called St. John's fan (goes by the name of SJHooper) after today's game, talk about a guy ready to jump of the bridge lol. His 2nd & 3rd posts are even better

Did Joe3 find a new home after getting banned from here??

I was thinking the same thing. The same guy has already started a "Fire Lavin" type thread.

Back the game, I know it wasn't a thing of beauty but come on. We crushed them last year (I know they had injuries) & that didn't mean much in the grand scheme of things in the end.

I agree. Minnesota game will tell us what to expect from the season.

First off I want to thank the fan that gave me and my son tickets in the second row. The President showed up with his wife in the first row late in the second half. I don't think he was too impressed with the size of the crowd.

I was impressed with Obekpa in the warmups. He is stronger and in better shape than last year and has a nice touch on his free throws. Despite the competition, he looked like a man playing with boys. He played the entire first half without a break and was well conditioned. He played incredible defense and offense.

Harrison played well but he seems to lack decision making at times. He also needs to knock down more open shots. He should score 35-40 points against this competition.

Happy to see Greene on the bench most of the game. His shot looked off.

Jones is a horrible defender. Guys were taking him to the hole with ease. He also can't rebound inn a man to man defense. He has a little bit of offensive ability.

Amar's defense was bad also. However he is a much more experienced basketball player than Jones as well as taller. I would have liked to have seen him take more than one shot as I think he can score.

Balamou is not a bad athlete but needs to play more so that we can really see what he can do. He is also very small. Smaller than Pointer and Jordan.

Jordan was just horrific in the first half. He scored one point and fouled and turned it over. The coaching staff did a great job with him in the second half.

Branch was very good controlling the offense.

The coaching staff needs to strictly outline Pointer's role. At least he did score fifteen points.

The coaching staff did a good job getting out of the man to man for parts of the second half. They went to a two-three zone with Branch and Harrison up front and Jordan, Obekpa and either Pointer, Amar or Jones in the back. This worked because Branch an Harrison know how to play guard while Jordan is more of a small forward. He is a good rebounder and basketball player but everyone that said he is a good point guard have not been correct to this point. He also was extremely effective playing the third guard(small forward on offense) in the second half. He scored eighteen points. Branch had five assists. Jordan is Pointer with skill.

At this point. I a m comfortable with Branch, Jordan(as an off guard), Harrison and Obekpa. Between Pointer, Amar, Balamou, Jones and Greene we need to pray. I am still hopeful as this may be the last season that I can watch this team if recruiting goes as I expect.

This is the best post in this thread. Good job.

I'm almost certain it's him. I believe he's a fan of those teams he mentioned in the thread. All the talk about rankings, as well, as a sense of entitlement, per "his" teams. The same neurotic behavior. In some ways, I kinda feel sorry for that dude.

I also saw the whack Hoya guy on there, too.

Just hope our new President does mistake the small turnout for a lack of any interest in the program and treats it as an after thought like our last president seemed to. Hopefully he sees potential and will do whatever he can to help the program be successful.

He was seated just west of the visitor's bench and had that whole section to himself with absolutely no one around him - kind of a curious thing since he is the President. He has already shown himself to be very concerned about containing and reducing costs across the board. It's a pretty good bet that this guy will take a good, hard look at the status of the basketball program before renewing Lavin at $2 million plus.

That would really set us back. I mean if he fires LAVIN based on the false impression that the basketball program doesn't warrant significant financial support due to poor student turnouts.
Then we could forget about any significant investment to improve.
Wiser heads would prevail before that I would hope.

Sorry but I agree with Beast 100percent but perhaps you are interpreting it incorrectly. Another way of saying it is the school is getting little return on the $2 million investment. In this age of declining enrolment and applications perhaps the school could get an equal return at a million $ less per annum.
If we win the seats will be full if we play mediocre ball as we have done the last few years the players will play to an empty arena unless our marketing department has some brilliant ideas.
The bottom line is the coach must find a way to dance with the players he has or this will go down as the most disappointing class in Sju history.

Student support is irrelevant (at least short term). What matters are the donors.

I did interpret it differently. I read it initially as a cost conscious President potentially firing the expensive Coach to save money, because he could discount the support and value add the basketball program brings.
I concur we are not getting the return we need and on the value of donors (my euphemism was "wiser heads"). In sum, the Executive should achieve greater ROI, not by using student apathy or Lavin futility as the rationale for decreasing the investment, but by commiting to greater outcomes, with Lavin or without him.

I wasn't at the open practice, but it is an actual drill that is often practiced, based on my previous basketball experience (which isn't much). Basically throwing the ball up on the backboard while you jump and continue doing so. It's just a drill to get you accustomed to the backboard and a good drill to work on hands and reactions.

He clearly did it to boost our TEAM rebounding numbers. I mean everyone here complains about being bad on the boards. They think he's selfish but meanwhile he's doing it for the team.

Lucky he did it, otherwise Humboldt St would have outrebounded us. As it turned out the stat was 42-42.

People really expected a big turnout for an exhibition game in pretty bad weather?
Case in point for lack of interest.

I don't think so. This was an exhibition against a team we beat by 60 points last year, getting 1500 people was respectable IMO.

I went to the game yesterday and, while I would have liked to have seen them destroy a D-2 team, I know this is just their first pre-season game and I do think there were positives that can be built upon.

Positives:
-Obekpa's play on both ends of the court and in transition
-Team free throw shooting
-Sir Dom's taking the ball to the basket in half court set and mid range jump shot-I feel he
can be really be good in the half court offense if he doesn't get to far from the hoop and only needs
one dribble to power to a shot at the rim
-Jones' backside help to block a shot and ability to be part of the offense
-Rysheed's second-half play
-D'lo's ability to score in a variety of ways and his work on the boards

Negatives:
-Amar's looking at loose balls instead of running to them
-On the ball defense by all our guards-they were consistently able to beat us and blow by us on the dribble
-Reappearance of D'lo's tendency to get to into it with the opposing players instead of just playing
the game which he became so good at last year

All in all, I was happy that the team won its first "game" and know that there is plenty of room for improvement.

I truly believe that they will improve and that the season will be a successful one.

I hope that more fans show-up for the next game to support the team in person.

Lastly, I wonder whether the coaches held back anything from this game they may want the team to do in the regular season so as to have the element of surprise in the regular season.

FWIW (maybe nothing), there were over 6000 fans at the UCONN women's exhibition today which they won 115-26.

I'll tell you. It's not only an SJU problem, but our marketing is completely boring. A few days ago some kid at a college game hit a layup, a FT, a 3 point shot, and then a half court shot, and walked off with $1,000. The odds of anyone doing that are pretty astronomical without practice, yet the kid walked off with $1,000 measly bucks. How about SJU gives a student a shot at winning $10,000 reduction off tuition, or !5k or 20K? How about opening the doors for free for students to walk into games at halftime. It wouldn't be a deterrent for anyone to pay, but could bring in a few hundred kids who don't have the cash to get in, and doesn't cost a dime. Game seats aren't worth a dime when they are unsold, so why not do stuff to increase attendance among students when it doesn't really cost you anything once the game starts.
