Humboldt St

People really expected a big turnout for an exhibition game in pretty bad weather?
Case in point for lack of interest.

I don't think so. This was an exhibition against a team we beat by 60 points last year, getting 1500 people was respectable IMO.

FWIW (maybe nothing), there were over 6000 fans at the UCONN women's exhibition today which they won 115-26.

UConn is like the Kentucky of women's basketball. They just won 2 NCAA titles in a row, they're in the final four or elite 8 almost every year. They're an extraordinary case.

The UConn women's game has a great turnout for the same reason the Kentucky men's game (on the air now on ESPN) has. These are programs that have been winning big for many years & they are the only show in town. There are too many other things to do in NYC, so when you have a program like St. John's that has had only 1 NCAA in the last 10 plus years, plus it's an exhibition game & lousy weather, no one should be surprised at the turnout that we had. The diehards will show up but there are too many St. John's fans that have the "what have you done for me lately" attitude. Whether that is right or wrong is another issue but it's an issue that we have to deal with.

I went to see our women play UConn about ten years ago at CA. There were about 3100 people at the game. 3,000 UConn fans and one hundred of us. The average age of the UConn fan was probably 75. I think they give out season passes to seniors and bus them from the old folks homes.

I wasn't at the open practice, but it is an actual drill that is often practiced, based on my previous basketball experience (which isn't much). Basically throwing the ball up on the backboard while you jump and continue doing so. It's just a drill to get you accustomed to the backboard and a good drill to work on hands and reactions.

He clearly did it to boost our TEAM rebounding numbers. I mean everyone here complains about being bad on the boards. They think he's selfish but meanwhile he's doing it for the team.

Lucky he did it, otherwise Humboldt St would have outrebounded us. As it turned out the stat was 42-42.

And they killed us on the offensive glass. Just like last year, we are intent on blocking shots, which results in being out of position for 'bounds. it seems that boxing out is a lost art form on this team. If a small team can pound the glass like that imagine what'll happen when we face the big boys.

FWIW:

@franfraschilla: UConn wins 70-62 over D-2's No.2 ranked Southern Connecticut. Stayed for 35 minutes and it was dog fight. Teachable moment for Huskies.

Point taken. Nothing personal but the difference is Uconn is coming off a NC and we are coming of crapping the bed at home in first round of NIT. We need to establish a mind set that we are coming hard at all times.

Talk about the sky is falling, take a look at a thread posted on Holy Land of Hoops by a so called St. John's fan (goes by the name of SJHooper) after today's game, talk about a guy ready to jump off the bridge lol. His 2nd & 3rd posts are even better

Bumping this post because the thread continued on holy land and shots were taken at redmen.com and btw SJhooper is clearly joe3 because he goes on about how he got banned.

These things happen to good teams. Posters don't realize how good some of these top D-2 teams really are. Most of the kids are only playing there because a lack of size or athletic ability. They are usually pretty smart and skilled players. You get the right mix of skill players with some undersized athletes and you have a tough team to beat. They tend to be ready faster than high athletic/low IQ D-1 teams like SJU, and this is their Super Bowl.
