how many scholarships left?

@ Steve - The priority was to get a team on the floor for next year. They have done that for the most part, with maybe (hopefully) at least 1, maybe 2 more) good additions. And, they have one guy that will sit out a year and be eligible for next year. The roster will balance out, and next year's will be more balanced than this year's. There will be more to do for next year, and they should be starting on 2017 as well. A lot to do.

who is @steve?

The scholarship situation is really one of the last things we should be concerned with. If we ever do have to worry about it, it's a great problem to have, one we haven't dealt with much in the last 20 years.

But 3 weeks ago we were worried about fielding a team for next year. Regardless of how many scholarships were formally taken, we really only played 6 guys last year, 4 of whom have graduated. The math may make it look like we are jammed up, but practically we are not even close to it.

It will work itself out, for next year and certainly the year after. If it becomes a problem beyond that, it means the program will be in incredible shape.

It's my guess that at least one (maybe two) of these players will not be on scholarship next year:

Doughty
Barnes-Thompkins
Jones

Personally, I am not sold on Doughty being ready to contribute during the conference portion of the schedule next year. Would like to see a transfer guard with a good handle.

Doughty would be our 2nd or 3rd (at worst) scoring option and probably a starter based on today's roster makeup. We need to keep him and add more scorers in the worst way.

You're right, we do still need more scoring for next year. I am just not blown away by Doughty.

I think, all said and done, we will have better.

Look at Doughty STATS HE IS A BIG TIME SCORER

So now we have this All-Star recruiting team and they filled a bunch of holes in the roster. Great! Uh-oh...For the 2016-17 year, which is effectively next year's recruiting season, we have only three scholarships available, and that assumes we don't use another one this year.

Sounds like Chris will be doing some roster 'management', otherwise the All-Star recruiting team will be sitting around doing nothing.

I don't see a problem with having three ships available in a class.

I agree. Doughty looks like a high end foundation kid. Programs need kids like him. They help keep your program competitive and avoid drastic rebuilding projects.

Thanks. They really should state who is scholarship and who is not on the official roster.

Why, if they are on the team they are on the team regardless of scholarship or not.

Because it would make Sean's life a lot easier if he didn't have to remember who was a walk on and who had a scholarship on what we can only assume is his favorite college basketball team. Just kidding Sean, kind of.

Anything that makes my life easier I am all for!

Even though they were walk ons, they were not seniors. I am curious as to why they are not expected to be on team next year. Even though they will be extremely unlikely to have any impact on games directly, the impact of having them available during practices helps all the other players on the team, especially since they have prior experience in Div 1 college practices.

Coach Mullin (yep, the name "Coach Mullin" has a good ring to it) is playing the hand that was dealt to him.

It will take Coach Mullin and his hard working staff a recruiting cycle or so to improve the situation that he inherited.

I agree that it may take 2-3 recruiting cycles for the staff to get their own elite players in order for us to get to the next level (winning NCAA tourney games) but Chris has already improved the situation by getting 3 guys 6 8 and taller to commit so fast.

Also the situation he inherited doesn't look so bad anymore either. With Sheed and Obekpa back and a possible recommit from Sampson we could be pretty good next year. The following year is where we may need patience but with all these transfers and the way the staff works, you never know.

I can definitely envision us playing with 10 this season, especially if the staff lands two more quality players who'll have to sit out next season. I can see a big press on Cunningham after this weekend if he is receptive. Can also see the Belgian kid from Miami landing here.

I was always of the opinion that the first order of business for the new staff would be getting Rysheed and Obekpa to to recommit and Sampson to keep his commitment. 2/3 of the way there. I wasn't sure that this was possible so I'm impressed.

Originally I was thinking that if Diallo and Samspon committed there would only be one ride available for next class but there would have to be at least one transfer/decommit to make room this year so there would really be at least 2 rides available for the class of 2016, Obekpa's and Felix's. Also, JJ's scholarship distribution table assumes JDR get's a schollie next year which would also become available for the class of 2016, and I've never even seen it confirmed that he is eligible.

Stewart's and Henderson's parents may have been able to stomach paying for St. John's for one season while looking at the big picture. But now the picture has changed, and both should be able to land low-/mid-major scholarships should our new staff seek to go in a different direction.

I'm sure they are welcome to stay as walk-ons, though.

We were lucky to get Sheed back this year but I wouldn't count on him staying for his senior year (there's another ship). Diallo (if he comes) could be a 1 and done so there's another spot.

Also, assuming we have a current player or commit leave, we could fill that opening with a grad transfer like Collins who would only be here a year.

I don't think we should really be too concerned about not having enough ships. Although the way the staff is offering players, you never know. That could become a nice problem for us to have real soon.
