An inside source has just told me Heron is done for the year, apparently due to ankle injury.

Oh well ...

Spotted on campus wearing a boot today

I dont think he ever healed from his ankle injury, explaining his disappointing performance this year.

When it rains, it pours.

Already struggling to find wins in the Big East, St. John’s will now be without senior guard Mustapha Heron for “likely” the rest of the season, the school told The Post in a statement.

Heron, the Johnnies’ second-leading scorer at 13.8 points per game, re-aggravated a pre-existing right ankle injury and is in a walking boot. He will not play Wednesday night against Providence at Carnesecca Arena and may have played his last college game.

“A timetable for Heron’s return has not been set, but it is likely he will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season,” the school said in a statement.

Heron initially injured his right ankle Dec. 10 against Brown and missed the next three games, returning in a road loss to Xavier on Jan. 5. He struggled in Big East play, averaging 12.4 points on 36.1 percent shooting. He started coming off the bench two games ago, replaced by sophomore Greg Williams Jr.

Now it appears St. John’s, which is 13-11 and 2-9 in the league, may have to finish out the season without one of its most talented players.

We've been in a 20 year monsoon. #cursed

Very tough break for Mustapha, horrible way to have to end his college career. Wish him the best.

Really feel for Mustapha Heron. Kid came to St. John's to be close to his ill mother and has dealt with nothing but injuries for two years. #sjubb

We've been in a 20 year monsoon. #cursed[/quote] Maybe a good thing in the long term. It's obvious now that this was impacting his performance, and it will give someone who is a part of this team's future, a chance to play more minutes. If we were 5-6 in the league, this would be a lot more crushing, IMO.

It doesn't matter for this year because we already stink. It's just the point that literally anything that can go wrong with this program will go wrong. It's really unbelievable at this point.

Awful news. really feel bad for the kid. He came here for one coach, stayed for a 2nd. And was never right the whole season.

If I'm him I'd sit the rest of the season to get healthy for the NBA draft process. Hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of his former teammates (Ponds, Simon and Owens) and get an opportunity to chase his NBA dream.

If I'm CMA, the rest of the season is now about developing Greg Williams as much as possible. I'll be disappointed if he's not among the team leaders in minutes the rest of the year.

Heart goes out for the kid, his struggles never effected his effort. Thanks for choosing sju Mustapha and good luck to you in your basketball future!

Could be no final decision is made. Schools are also hesitant to go into too many details on players health issues before the player talks about it publicly due to potential HIPPA violations.

All the best to you Mustapha!
Good luck in the classroom and with all your future endeavors. And thank you for all of your efforts at St. John’s.
Blessings :)

Because he wasn't asked about it, maybe?

There was a play early in the season where Mustapha and Greg were trapping someone in the backcourt, deflected a pass and Mustapha went up with little momentum and had a nasty slam.

I thought, man, he's back, 100 percent, this is the guy we waited a season for. I really thought he could've been all BE this year.

And then his puzzling play once BE started. Now we have an answer.

Still, he played his rear off. Great citizen. Great rep for the school. Very bright future no matter where his bball career goes.

Man I feel for the kid. I remember following his recruitment and hoping he chose sju. Good luck and thank you for representing the university and yourself so well!

I have to agree with SJU 61982 that this is not a disaster for SJU. Terrible for Heron but it allows the SJU staff to play and evaluate the players slated to return next year. It will also give these players much needed experience.
Heron never seemed to be the player he should have been all season and the ankle is probably part of the reason.
