Guards

I guess you're not interested in joining the Mussini fan club any time soon.

I have nothing against him personally, I just find his complete lack of athleticism and basketball skills off putting.

He is not a big part of the team going forward so no need to keep bashing him but I have no idea what people are watching regarding his defense. It is actually pretty comical. Watching him play always kind of reminds me of the Rudy scenes where he gets pummeled for 2 years in practice by better, bigger, more athletic guys.

Most people realize he just can't guard anyone & gets manhandled consistently. Some folks like him & are apt to ignore it a bit. Each to their own I guess.

Agree, but both Mussini and Ellison can contribute. It's the job of the staff to put players in situations that play to their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Mussini was asked to carry a huge load playing out of position last year and did it to the best of his ability with tremendous character, I thought. It's unfortunate that he is still getting stuck in roles that don't play to his strengths. I understand you can only hide defense to a point, but on balance I would happily give him Ahmed's minutes because IMHO it would be a net plus for the team.

Was hoping Mussini could play a role like Brady Heslip (a better player) did at Baylor. Unfortunately BU had better players by far than this team & could craft a complementary role more easily IMO.

What about predominately playing Ahmed at PF, which may cut down on wild drives from perimiter & help with rebounding? Getting desperate. :)

If I were coaching this team I would start Owens Yakwe and Ellison up front, Ponds and Lovett at guard. I would press and trap for 40 minutes, maybe mix in a little zone for a change of pace here or there. I would get minutes off the bench for Williams, Ahmed, Mussini, and probably Holifield (I have never understood not using Williams for what he can do, which is rebound run the floor and get in passing lanes).

Ahmed would go in for Ellison btw and yes I would use them both at a forward spot where they don't handle the ball, just receive and score or rebound and score.

And when the press/trap doesn't result in open court baskets, you need the Hoosiers rule and pass the ball at least 3 times before somebody shoots.

Do you really want me to stop bashing him? Because slander is just about my best feature. I suppose I could try a sonnet. My Missini's eyes are nothing like the sun. Shall I compare thee to a Scottie May? I Being born a Roman and Depressed. Stick with what you know I say.

No was referring to myself actually as I think I have been harder on him than you.

Agreed. In fact, while watching the Penn game, I got the feeling early on, even when SJU was winning, that our players were not sure if they should shoot, or pass. They seemed very tentative. Maybe ball sharing has been stressed a little too much? We have got to get RF more involved. Where is that great long distance shooting he is so talented at?

For good reason I sense.

Should we all collectively say: "for the Love(tt) of Pete." If so, is China calling or another university?

ugh really hope nobody leaves. but i would rather keep ponds over lovett

anyone that transfers out can also refer to rawdog's post in the Next Coach thread.

Some of these guys play defense like they have no balls. Might as well lose the rest of the package.

If one of the two guards leave that is all she wrote on the Mullin era as coach. Not saying he should be fired but you have to build on those two if one leaves he will not be able to recover. Not sure he will turn it around with both guys but no shot w/o one.

I'm not an expert, and that's pretty poor as I sit next to monte and Paultzman at many games, but even I can see the poor defense is mostly on our guards. And I'm not seeing moose or Ellison as the main culprits.

Our big men can't be too pleased when they constantly get burned by penetrating guards dishing off to a man when they had to cover the guy our guards failed to guard.

Forget about Ponds and Lovett shooting 75% of the field goal attempts. How about getting in their faces over their failures to guard their man?

Unfortunately guards such as Ponds and Lovett didn't have to play much defense in high school, taking chances by stealing passes.

Have a hard time seeing Lovett transfer after already sitting a year. Maybe leave for a paycheck. Maybe Mussini leaves.

I disagree. Lovett is an excellent scorer, but having 2 undersized guards playing 30 plus minutes together can create problems on the defensive end way too often. If he leaves after this year, we will have a more balanced back court in terms of size. I hope he stays, but, as Branch Rickey told Ralph Kiner, "We finished last with you, we can finish last without you".
