Gtown rematch game thread...

I know after we win many on the board are ready for The Dance and when we lose "Let's show Lavin the door" becomes the emotion of the moment. The bottom line is it is about the players. We got out-rebounded, yes, by 6. Both teams had 15 offensive rebounds. The difference is GT finished. Lubick scored on his offensive putbacks, we didn't. Greene and Harrison shot 5 for 25. They took almost half our shots and shot 2o%, enough said. Having said that, we are just not there yet, we are a middle of the road BE team, which I think is real, genuine progress. As fans we tend to overrate our players and think every loss is reversible if only the coach did this or that. But we we need more players, more depth, more versatility, more experience. Experience not just in years, but in chemistry, in handing down program goals, expectations, practice habits, etc. We are a young program, not necessarily a young team.
Two ancillary comments, my high school coach used to always get really pissed by after game confrontations; you want to show you're tough, knock someone down in the game. We don't have any players willing to play that physical, so spare me the after game nonsense; it means nothing. Finally, Branch's injury was a shame but part of the game, there was nothing dirty about it.
Actually, one last comment, I really wish we would stop with the "white boy" comments every time one has a good game against us. The best player ever to don an SJU uniform happened to be white the last time I looked. Were I to come on here commenting about "black" players as stereotypes (which I would never do) I could only imagine the backlash. The truth is, Jerry West, Rick Barry, Larry Bird, Chris Mullin, etc. were all white and could play with anyone. Yes, blacks dominate the sport but whites can play too. Racism works both ways and I for one am offended by the allowance of the comments on the board.

I agree with all your comments except the "racism" card you want to inject. You are much too experienced a poster to misinterpret the reference to the movie "White Men Can't Jump" with Woody Harrelson. Next time we play the Hoyas, I think Lavin will impress on our players that they should not underestimate that player......the way the street ballers underestimated Woody Harrelson in the movie. Other than you and a couple of altar boys here, I do not think anyone was looking to reference "reverse" discrimination.
I would be more worried about Marco getting the ball in open situations if you are going to reference every white player that comes to mind in your reference above. That he scored 12 points in 13 minutes was the only reason this game was not a 20+ point loss.

Stop with your nonsense; I am not talking about an isolated reference to a movie; the same comments were made after the point guard from Frisco chewed us up. And made at least once by someone every time it happens. I am far from an altar boy but i find it offensive that's all, just like I would find it offensive if it were reversed. And don't tell me I wouldn't hear it if I said we have a low basketball IQ because we are primarily black, which is not true at all. There are plenty of smart unathletic black players and plenty of dumb athletic white ones, I just don't like steroeotypes period. Leave that to the knuckleheads at ESPN.

I for one fail to understand how you can start a team of "tiny tots" against a Georgetown team that is clearly abusing you with a rugged and large frontcourt. Obepka played 21 minutes of this game. He is the leading shot-blocker in the nation. If that isn't a complete failure to recognize your predicament, then I don't know what is. Meanwhile, Garrett is useless on the court in Big East games. He is TOO SMALL to play a front court position against the large bodies we are encountering. He has no shot...and his offense is uni-dimensional.

We lose ten points a game on sheer elemental "box out" issues. I'm seeing guys crashing the boards with no one even aware that they're coming. Surely, even in the CYO, they teach kids to get a body in front of perimeter crashers.

Coach Lavin was very fortunate that the team wasn't seriously hurt during the five successive victories with this idiotic starting line-up...and now he uses it like Coach Lou used to wear sweaters...pure superstition, no common sense. Georgetown won this game on the boards...Lavin played 11 minutes with a team that was way too small. C'mon Coach...Wake up! We want to have confidence in you, but you're making it hard.

UConn should be a win. AT MSG. Uconn tired. They are playing in OT at home against USF. Second OT game in a row for them. They will be tired, we need to be hungry.

I really don't understand all the braggadocio and almost cockiness coming into the game vs. UConn. If we beat UConn, it's easily our 3rd best win behind only ranked ND and ranked Cincy. They beat #14 Michigan State, #17 ND both away from home, took Marquette to OT away before losing, and lost to NC State by 4. It's not a stretch to suggest they might be ranked by year's end. It's very possible they can go 7-3 down the stretch beating SJ, Hall, Nova, Cincy (once), DePaul, USF, Prov. I wouldn't even be confident against Providence let alone UConn.

I'm black and I agree with Logen. Why are we always referring to "white boys" beating us. A player is a player, irrespective of race. The reason basketball in the US is dominated by black kids is because, living in inner cities, we have more access to basketball courts than football and baseball fields. There are many factors, besides genetics, that cause basketball to be dominated by black players.

You really think that? Environmental factors cannot explain the fact that the NBA is 83% black when blacks are only 14% of the entire country. It's probably 80% genetic 20% cultural (growing up with basketball as "the sport" to play). In the suburbs there are plenty of white kids with their own basketball hoops. I was one of those kids and I would work on my shot all the time. I always practiced 3 pointers and rarely practiced mid range, so even to this day I stay behind the line when shooting around. Though I could shoot pretty well, my ball handling was bad. I also can't dunk on a standard hoop. I worked in a school and saw a black kid exactly the same height as me (about 5'10) EFFORTLESSLY dunk it. When I say effortlessly I mean his head was above the rim. That was my "aha!" moment. No one can speak in absolutes because of course some white guys can match that, but in GENERAL there is a clear genetic advantage for blacks athletically at least in terms of basketball skill. It may be controversial to suggest races have different genetic advantages and disadvantages, but it's fairly obvious if you have an open mind, look at statistics, and observe.

I am sure it was unintended but you managed to loop into your response every offensive stereotype you could think of and in doing so, have made this discussion a distasteful one. Your reference to low basketball IQ and black players, even though mentioned as an example, has never been mentioned by anyone on this message board, other than you to this point. Funny how the subconscious of ones' mind works.
Perhaps, subconsciously, you are more upset that in games we have lost, some opposing player, who does not fit the profile as a scoring threat, has managed to have a career game and then become a mere mortal in all the games that followed, after playing us........if, so, then I agree.

Actually, we do not "always refer to white boys beatings us". In the UNC Ashville game I attended a guy named Atkinson scored 31 points to beat us. In fact, of all our losses this season, the only occasions one could even make that statement was when Baylor's Heslip scored 29 to beat us and when Arcidiacono scored a 32 for Nova to beat us. I am pretty sure all our other losses had something to do with black players beating us but since this is basketball we are talking about, the "rarity" of a white player beating us is as much "news" as Jeremy Lin making the front pages of the national media and the constant refrence to nis being "Chinese" did not seem to upset even the most ardent defenders of equal opportunity in the world of sports.
You see, if you are going to jump on somebody's bandwagon, you should at least have facts to back you up.
I am sure when you made reference to Sylvan and said a getting a "second rate education would have served him well" you did not mean attending St. John's would have been a second rate education but that you meant it as a response to his dad selecting Virginia because Sylvan would get a better education there and then could not keep up with UVA's rigorous academics.
I am sure some others would have taken your comment out of context but not I Simplyred.
