Huge win for sure yesterday. One of the best in a long time. This team would have to make it to San Antonio for this to be considered best regular season conference game. Before that we would have to win the Big East outright. Something we have only done once (1985). We did share the regular season title four other times (1980, 1983, 1986, and 1992).
For me, the 1985 game in Landover stands alone. Although it was a battle of No.3 vs No.1, the Hoyas were favored by 10 points. Defending champs and riding a 29 game winning streak. National TV with Brent Musburger and Billy Packer on the call for CBS.
Dominating the first 35 minutes and hanging on for dear life the rest of the way. Just like that, 29 game winning streak snapped and a No.1 ranking for 5 weeks. A Sports Illustrated cover to celebrate the victory. Ironically the last Hoyas loss was to St. John’s at the Cap Centre the prior season.
