Greatest regular season win ever?

Okay, this sounds like a reach but hear me out.

Since the advent of conference play, only one similar game stands out for me with the regular season conference championship on the line. I think you can guess.

In 1985 we had every reason to be sky high when we went down to Landover, ran up a double digit lead (14 points) with our newest addition who was Berry Berry good. A furious comeback fell short and when Georgetown and St Johns met again, in a college basketball sense it was Frazier vs Ali - yes THAT big on a national level and even bigger in Queens.

Of course we could beat them at home, right? First place in the Big East on the line. #1 national ranking on the line. Every reason to believe it was the precursor of the National Championship. For us it was all three.

Except for us it was a crushing defeat. We were pummeled. Bloodied so badly, we would lose twice more to Georgetown without even a puncher's chance.

That loss in the sweater game was the forebearer of many disappointments in big moments. It seems that with very few exceptions over the past 40 years with the chips on the line, whether an ncaa or NIT bid, or a place in the standings, we failed.

Yesterday meant a TON. Win and we strengthen our grip on first place to 2, 2.5, and 3.5 games. Lose and Creighton ties us for first, but also wins the first tie breaker in head to head. First place would be a lot less likely since we'd have a lot of ground to make up. If Creighton went 3-2 down the stretch, we'd have to go 4-1. Impossible? No. Much more difficult, definitely.

Instead we reverted to our grind it out success with a ton of big plays. If we go 3-2, a trailing team would have to go 5-0 with at worst the head to heads knotted.

Gigantic win in a big test for our guys. They came through. Biggest regular season win ever in conference play so far? Maybe, but Im sure ESPKEN will go to work

Happy as hell with this one.

Big regular season wins, didn’t we beat Duke twice in 1978 if I remember correctly? I was only 12yrs old but I remember playing North Carolina also that year or it might have been 1979. Kevin Williams made some big plays at the end. I have to look it up.

The Duke games were in Dec 78 and March 79. Black Sunday on Tobacco Road. UNC and Duke both got NCAA games in Greensboro. Penn beat UNC and we beat Duke. Carolina wom was Nov 82. My favorite big time win is still beating Tennessee with Grunfeld and King.

All preconference and without the same significance. One win vs Duke was in consolation game of holiday Festival

Biggest win in my lifetime was Lapchicks last team beating number one Michigan in the Holiday Festival. I’ve seen nothing quite like it since.
Saw that group as well, In semis it was Bill Bradley v Cazzie Russell in magical game. Bradley fouled out after an awesome game & Prjnceton folded. I never thought we had a chance in championship, Jerry Houston led Johnnies won!

Huge win for sure yesterday. One of the best in a long time. This team would have to make it to San Antonio for this to be considered best regular season conference game. Before that we would have to win the Big East outright. Something we have only done once (1985). We did share the regular season title four other times (1980, 1983, 1986, and 1992).

For me, the 1985 game in Landover stands alone. Although it was a battle of No.3 vs No.1, the Hoyas were favored by 10 points. Defending champs and riding a 29 game winning streak. National TV with Brent Musburger and Billy Packer on the call for CBS.

Dominating the first 35 minutes and hanging on for dear life the rest of the way. Just like that, 29 game winning streak snapped and a No.1 ranking for 5 weeks. A Sports Illustrated cover to celebrate the victory. Ironically the last Hoyas loss was to St. John’s at the Cap Centre the prior season.

Back to the current team which has been special to date. 3 wins away from breaking the school record for Big East regular season victories. Held by, yes the 1984-85 team. Here’s hoping to revisit if yesterday can indeed be in the discussion for the greatest regular season win in conference play.

Johnnies trailed by 16 in that one with under 10 minutes left. Wish I could find the box score to that game; doesn't seem to exist on the web anymore.

Biggest Regular Season win in my fandom going back to 87 will be March 1 2025 when with a near sellout we beat Seton Hall at MSG to win the Big East Conference play outright if we haven't clinched it before.

On Senior Day we can give seniors who had nothing to do with St Johns a year ago and a bunch of other great kids and staff and Rick F'ing Pitino a proper tribute and thank you for changing what seems like our eternal damnation in basketball hell for 20+ years and making us feel like something as fans again

I've only been a fan since 2012, but the best wins for me were from this season, particularly the past few weeks. @ #19 UConn, #11 Marquette, PC (final shot), #24 Creighton, etc. Sure over the past decade we've pulled off some major upsets, such as vs. #4 Duke and @ #1 Villanova, but the fact those were coming off an 11 game losing streak really made them irrelevant outside of those couple weeks. Even at the time those Giant Slayers shirts were a complete joke.

The win at Syracuse in Lavin's final season, which got us ranked for a few weeks, was awesome at the time. The sold out game at MSG vs. #13 Villanova in Mullin's final season was special, I was in attendance for that one, but we were only fighting for bubble placement. It just feels totally different now battling for a HIGH seed and top 10 AP placement. We're relevant nationally now with high odds to go deep in the Tournament, whereas since 2012 we were never once seen as a serious Tournament threat.

1985 beating Georgetown to go to #1 was biggest for me.

Other memorable honorable mention in-conference games all involve Syracuse.

1986 at Garden win vs. Cuse to put them into position to capture regular season title. Week before Ron Rowan game

1985 Berry forces overtime in last seconds at Garden to preserve #1 ranking

1999 at Carrier Dome getting killed by Cuse and abused by Ethan Thomas. Artest takes it upon himself to play center and shut him down and lead impressive comeback that propelled that team.

Four of my personal favorites but not the most significant regular season wins:

1989 beating #4 Syracuse at Garden on game winning shot by Matt Brust. Jayson Williams was a beast that day and you saw the glimpses from Freshman Malik Sealy that he was going to be a star.

1986 in Pittsburgh. Down 16 at Fitzgerald Field House, The Truth goes crazy in 2nd half to lead ferocious comeback win.

1990 Boo Harvey hits game winner at Capital Centre against Georgetown team with Mourning, Mutombo, and Jaren Jackson

2012 Dwight Hardy leads win against Villanova at Wells Fargo Center during Lavin’s first year.

In my lifetime beating duke at duke is by far number 1. Especially since I was there in person.
Me as well. We were so excited we stayed there another night. At the hotel bar afterwards, Antonio Freeman (of the Packers), a friend of Bottsy's was there with his entourage. One of those guys was living it up on Freeman's credit card with all kinds of exotic drinks and mucho food.

I remember it being unnaturally warm for February and the place was hot inside, especially sitting behind the bench..The rows there literally seemed to be undivided benches and to get in and out of your seat, you had to walk on the floor.

Another wrinkle; this game was right after a mini scandal involving Barkley's car swap and Coach K. told the Crazies to lay off of him since they were known to rattle car keys whenever something like that popped up. Now, with NIL, college players probably drive even nicer cars than the trust fund Duke students. Besides, they'd only have fobs to shake so that would not work out as well.

But as Beast pointed out, Sunday's win was probably more important conference wise in the context of where we have been lately. In that circa 2000 era, we had pretty good teams who were coached by a father and son. :)
