So a kid like this, for example, can transfer now, sit out the spring semester, sit out the fall semester, and then play as a second semester junior with new team.
Or
He could play out the whole year, transfer to a new school, sit out a year, and then have a full two years to play.

Transferring mid season loses kids a full year.

Unless my math is wrong, from a basketball perspective he losses the first semester of his junior year. Which doesn't really amount to a whole lot if a kid wants out. So instead of having 2 years of eligibility remaining, he has a 1 1/2 years. But he doesn't have to sit out an entire year of ball.

First semester his junior year plus this semester coming up for his sophomore year. So it s 1 1/2 compared to 2 1/12

Yeah, however the guys that transfer mid year do it for a reason that usually precludes them being a happy and productive member of the team the second semester. And there is a third option, if the kid just doesn't want to stay for the 2nd semester he can still keep 2 full years of eligibility by sitting out the rest of the year and the entire next year at his new school. However, there does really need to be some penalty for leaving your team mid season.

Yup, there is definitely that side to it.

How about 30 days confinement and a $1,500 fine?

$1,500 fine isn't much. At Kentucky it is a week's pay for the player.

Its basically up to the player and the school he transfers into.

Matt Brust transferred after 1st semester at UNC. Sitting out a year, he would have been eligible the second semester of his sophomore year, giving him 2 1/2 years. Instead, he sat out 1 1/2 and had three full years to play here.

Jamal Branch transferred after 1st semester at Texas A&M. He stat out 1 year and played 2 1/2 years.

Yes but dont really see that route taken these days. Too bad becaue It would be nice to have Jamal on this years team.

Agreed.

Different situation, but Bootsy Thornton came here from Juco mid year. He was eligible to play immediately once he transfered in, but would have only have been able to play the second semester that year and the one full year. By sitting out that 1/2 year, he gave us two fantastic years.

Mike Mennefield did just the opposite.

This could be the first time in my history of being a St Johns fan where I'd say we don't need Goodluck knowing all we get is bad luck

BUT I'm cool with what we have going forward. I want to make sure we have room in 2017 because I think that's when we start going on a monster roll recruiting wise ( and I will be ecstatic with the 16 kids that have been mentioned)
