Georgetown- Game 2

Headed to a nearby pub to watch the last 10 minutes with a buddy. Been celebrating for the past 7 hours. Few things bring me as much joy as a win over G'town.

Congrats and thanks to our seniors. Great day for our SJU family.

Looking forward to the tournament. I'd book flights tonight if I knew where we are headed!

We are...

Best SJU game in years. So much fun from start to finish. Great experience being there.

After 4 years of being maligned this kid showed us he was a man today and won the game for us.
Congratulations Phil!!

the funny thing about all those stats is that last year we thought we needed Hooper and zone busters but they were here all along. just move the ball to the open man.

St John's is also undefeated when scoring more points than its opponent!

Went to the game, watching it again on dvr... Is there anyone better than Marv Albert? Phil Green for three... YES! Nobody better .

The bad

I was stuck at work yesterday, so I had to follow the game on my phone. Didn't get to see the game until last night.

The (expected) bouts of acephaly. The flagrant fouls which give our opponents unearned opportunities. The technicals which do the same, as well as give another personal to our already undermanned team. Things like these tend to be your undoing in a one-and-done situation. And there seems to be no end to this behavior in sight.

Top Gun can't be taking in-game sabbaticals. To be fair though, there's nobody I trust more out on the court when he's in foul trouble.

Jamal's injury. He's done a great job stabilizing the team this year. He's come up big for us when we needed him. I expected it to be caused by him driving down the lane and getting hammered. Instead, it looks like he stepped kind of funny mid-stride. Frustrating and infuriating, it's like there is no feast without the famine.

The good

I was stuck at work yesterday, so I had to follow the game on my phone. Redmen.com was key in that capacity - thanks guys!

Sharing the scoring burden. Can't just focus on D'Lo any more.

When PG gets the ball ready to shoot, he has been Fantastic IV this year, and it was on full display yesterday.

Controlling the Tempo. In the first half, it was great seeing one blue shirt backpedaling at full speed, with three or four white jerseys bearing down on him. In the second half, slowing down the game seemed to enable us to maintain our lead without allowing the Hoyas to go on a run.

We got an early lead and maintained it. Down the stretch, we hit our free throws.

And how good was Smith-Rivera yesterday? He was deadly inside the mid court line. It's easier to appreciate an opponent after a victory.

For all those who viewed Hooper with milk-white colored glasses, and think he'd have a role on this year's squad, consider this: one of the keys to our half court offense success this year is ball movement. Hooper was one of those black holes last year. He never saw a pass he liked. If he got the ball, he was firing it up. IF you don't believe me, look at the paucity of assists he has this year - almost zero. So, while he would conceivably be the beneficiary of great ball movement this year, he'd also be the impediment to such, because he just doesn't pass well. There's a reason his college career is a failure. He's a one trick pony who only shoots well and nothing else.

Two quick thoughts;

In last two key contests we gained first half edge winning turnover disparity. Having two nice lads going into second half is nice.

Secondly, contrary to when we were in a rut earlier in season, we actually had the edge in foul differential. Getting into bonus earlier than opponents, despite being undersized, is remarkable.

Two thing to your second point: attack the basket, push the ball in transition both lead to fouls. Discipline on defense and being in position, reaching less and far away from the ball leads to committing less fouls. Does anyone really believe that nothing is happening in practice?
