Freudenberg

Too bad. I was hoping he was committed to working on his game and getting better. He just looked slow and mechanical here. I guess our record of recruiting European shooters who can't play remains intact. Good luck to him he seemed like a good kid.

In light of Freudenberg's departure, I am concluding that the staff feels very confident about landing a big man who can contribute immediately. Imagine going into the season with the current/remaining front court. Hope the staff is correct.

Same front court as end of this year with Clark replacing Williams. Freudenberg never played and Amar's still here for now. Can only get better if we add anyone decent. Backcourt is better with more experienced Lovett and Ponds and Simon replacing Ellison.

And does anyone care about the time, money and energy that goes into recruiting kids who don't pan out and/or stay just one year? I can't blame him for leaving. But this revolving door does leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I think RF gave up on himself too soon. I think he had the skills to grow into a BE player. It was a big step up and he lost his confidence.

I wish him well.

I suspect that RF was probably way more realistic about his skill sets and his lack of athleticism, as it relates to being a high D1 basketball player, than many of the posters on this board. Maybe he would have developed in to a serviceable player at some point, but that's a big "maybe". Best of luck RF, thanks for being a Johnny.

Perhaps he did but sadly not with condition of our program

I'm starting to think Mullin has a better eye for talent than Matt. Maybe Mully should be making all the trips a la Lavin and let Matt focus on only transfers and JC kids.

Disappointed. I looked at him as another 2017 recruit. Figured he contributed nothing in '16 but figured if Mullin had high hopes for him.perhaps he would have upside.

He didn't transfer to Iona. He went back to Germany to play professional basketball.

Wasn't questioning why he left or the justification...just disappointed because I thought he had some ability

Oh well, we'll always have those two big corner threes he hit against cuse in the first half to remember him by. :)

With RF (and presumably AliB) gone, that leaves us with just 8 schollie players (not counting Holyfield). And still thin up front. I assume we will need to bring in at least 2 bigs for this year to have a full complement. Opens up a lot more flexibility in the next few recruiting classes.

Joins a long list of great white hopes that were signed by St. John's that fizzled more than sizzled.
Marc Antoine Bourgault, Max Hooper, Amar Alibegovic, Matt Brust, Fred Lyson.......

Matt Burst was a solid three year player for us. Not a superstar but solid. Not sure how much hope there was in Lyson who started some games and then had to quit because of a degenerative disk issue in his back. Brust was definitely more hyped as he and Shelton Jones were the top two players on Long Island their seinior year (Kenny Atkinson the Nets coach was also from that Long Island class).

But since you brought it up, do you want to add Orvis, Wolfinger, Doyle and Cavataio..

I had posted something early in the season that except for the most heralded Euro players, most have a more difficult adjustment. What I got back from posters was that if he were here, he would have been graded a 4 star recruit. Some mentioned Detlef Shrempf as comparison, which was only slightly crazy.

I think he could have developed into a rotation player, but too many here expected him to be an impact player. HE likely came to SJU based on the thinness of the roster the previous year, hoping he could log serious D1 minutes and return to Europe eventually as a seasoned player accustomed to the more physical, uptempo US style basketball. He probably saw that daylight here at any point was not a sure thing, so looked for other options. Wish him the best. Like most of the players who come here, he seemed like a really good kid.

Good Luck to Richard. He seemed over his head at this level , contributed very little and didn't seem to have much upside going forward that was observable.. If Ellison and Williams transferred over PT next year, it was very doubtful Richard would have received much either. Don't regard his leaving as a Negative , more as a positive evolution that better Players are coming to our Roster... Simon and Clark, I believe were Top 100 players , when originally recruited by Arizona and Mich State respectively.. I think the transfer market for underclassmen, is driven by how much playing time they will get when they become eligible. On the other hand, I think the 5th year Transfer looks to play from Day 1 and be a focal part of the Starting team ..

Interestingly enough, Doyle ended up being a serviceable player at Northwestern and was part of their regular rotation. Since he graduated, he has been on the Big Ten Network, both in the studio and as a a game analyst.

I was thinking more the great European hope like Sergio Luyk or Phil Wait ;)
