Freudenberg

Not writing off RF by any stretch of the imagination, and granted the sample size is very small, but so far he has shown very little to indicate that he'll be successful at this level. As has been mentioned before, the game seems to be moving to fast for him. As for his shooting ability, which was supposed to be his strength, hasn't impressed. I'm less concerned with the results and much more concerned with the fact that he doesn't have very good form. He's supposed to be a stretch 4 but IMO he'd be more effective playing closer to the basket. Maybe he hits the weight room in the off season and comes back next year as the PF that we're sorely in need of.

You must be joking a bit. There is no way RF will play power forward at ny time during his stay here. At most he is a 3, and if he plays a 2 and can take advantage of his height against shorter guards, he can cause fits as a 2. If he is just going to hang on the perimeter than he may as well be 6'3 instead of 6'8 (Amar?). If he has any high value it will be as a 2 or 3 who can make outside shots regularly and occasionally be a height mismatch for a much shorter defender.

There is not a 2 guard in any country that he would be able to defend

I think many on here said the same about Mussini, who worked his ass off and showed he was a much better defender and quicker than he was given credit for.

Unless you're hitting the sauce early today, not sure why you would think I'm joking about him moving to the 4. Read this on Wagner coming out of High School if you care to:

Sounds an awful lot like RF.

Add to the fact that there is a big difference between today's four and a traditional PF.

However, I do prefer traditional PF's.

He might be able to keep up with Giddy Potts in a foot race, but I suppose getting mowed over or shot over wouldn't be consider good defense.

Another reason to become a proficient Zone defense team.

Mussini can't defend anyone either. But at least he can hit an open shot

I may be in the minority but I actually think Mussini has improved a lot in defending and is quick and annoying enough like a mosquito to throw off the offense. Older guys need to just understand that defense is not stressed anymore like it use to be and now college players are having to learn some basic fundamentals on defending.

With respect to Freudenberg, I do not see him contributing much unless he hits the courts 5 hours a day in the off season, he is sloppy on catching passes and once he gets the ball is not quick enough to make up his mind if he will dribble or take a shot which he usually misses. Even if he gains some size he still lacks D1 skills right now. I am not sure how he was recruited to play at this level.

Defense may not be stressed by all but South Carolina, West Virginia and even to some extant Xavier played beyond their talent in the dance because their defenses are pretty scary so maybe it should be stressed.

I wish our guys would learn that a steal or a block doesn't mean you are playing good defense. WVU caused hell by not letting you get the ball where you wanted to and forcing bad passes/shots.

Great points. Frank Martin coach at South Carolina commenting about his team playing great defense simply said "We didn't let people get by us". On the other hand our guys play a lot of matador defense and shout Ole' as guys go by them.

Is their any news on Freudenberg? This topic turned to defense.

Yes, he may or may not turn into the next Mo Wagner, either way it will be no help should STJ face Oregon next year.

Got to give him more time. Some guys produce right away, some need some experience first. RF in particular needs to gain some strength, with that his confidence will improve. If your writing him off already that's just foolish.

Would be shocked if this works out. I have been shocked before but usually the wrong way when it comes to ST John's. David Cain and Pointer off top of head were the only real pleasant shockers I can think of. And it took both of them 4 years.

Respect that. Certainly not a lock he is a contributor down the road, especially if his shot does not improve.

I thought he was going to be special, He was recruited I think to be much more than a contributor and seems to have ability to be more but he has truly been a disappointment If he does not improve to the point he starts I think his ship has sailed Hope he has a big turn around early
