Frank Allocco - De La Salle High CA

Allocco played football at ND (sport that is tough), he is Italian (nuff said) and by the clip and the looks of this guy he is a no nonsense type so no worries about any of that stuff IMHO.

I think the central question has to be if, God forbid, anything happened to Steve Lavin would this guy be considered
adequate to replace him giving us the continuity of the staff in place instead of forcing a complete turnover...ARRRRGH
My admittedly uninformed answer would have to be no at this point. I know it's a pretty mercenary way to look at it but we've built up something pretty good here and I'd hate to see it torn down. I would have thought one of the criteria for the new guy would be that he would be fit to step into the top job. Before I get killed here I'd just say we all know that coaches come and go for many reasons and planning ahead is a good idea. Especially for us. Just food for thought....

I doubt Allocco would get the job if something happened to Lavin, so don't worry. Hopefully you are a Danny Hurley fan, though.

I'd rather go Masiello.

I read a great book about Bob Hurley Sr. called The Miracle of St. Anthony's. I am sure some of you have as well. Followed him during one of his seasons a few years back (may have been 03-04). Anyway, in the book they discuss Jarvis getting canned and the speculation on WFAN that day by Russo and Francessa about how Hurley should be the lead candidate for the job. Both Danny -- then a coach at St. Benedict's, I believe - and Bobby wanted him to take it, and there were a lot of reasons why (close to home, tradition, Catholic school etc). At this point, I don't ever believe that Hurley Sr. will grace the sidelines of anywhere but St. Anthony's. But my understanding is that the Hurley's like St. John's, and I don't think it is out of the question that at some point in the years to come, one of the Hurley brothers is involved in our program.

I was actually going to list him, but wasn't sure if Pitino would tell him to turn it down. I have to imagine those two guys would be the top choices if we needed a new coach three seasons from now.

Went to endee, from a foreign country and played football.
Let's go with anybody else.

Coach Allocco has been going back to New Providence HS for 2 1/2 weeks every August to run the Excel Basketball camp. He is scheduled to be back again this summer.

I was responding to a post questioning whether he was tough enough. Could you please elaborate on your post, thanks?

Could you elaborate on why you think Italians are any tougher than other races?

Can we NOT go down that road please?

Agree with Moose completely.
Lets halt that discussion before it starts.

Are you trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

He would have changed it into a hanging slider.

2013 #73 player in the country is 6'5 SG Elliot Pitts from De La Salle. We would be eligible to sign him since Allocco would be a coach and not a DOBO.

Third player featured. From just the small clip it looks like he has a good handle and could play some point.

Rothstein reporting that details are being worked out for Frank Allocco to join SJU staff.

As far as Pitts goes, I'd take him in a heartbeat to eventually replace D'Angelo. Looks like a real good shooter and Savy player.

Im also a little concerned that he never was a college coach, but I trust Lavin on this one. I too, think we will be a top program in the future. Everytime I read the Cincy boards and they would say how much better then us they are,,I thaught that they will be better then us next year, but starting the year after, we are going to leave them in the dust.

It's a valid concern, but my gut reaction is this would be a very strong hire. As the people on this board have mentioned, Lavin is not trying to bring in another assistant with recruiting ties. Between Chiles and Hines, he doesn't need anymore assistants on the HS sidelines. But what he does need is someone who knows the game inside out. Similar to Hurley, Allocco seems to be a coaches coach in every sense of the word. His full-time job will be to take these young kids and transform them into the best basketball players they are capable of being.

Do any of you remember George Glymph? Prior to him coming to the NBA, he was a longtime HS coach here in South Carolina at Eau Claire HS. Many of his Eau Claire team's competed on a national level. His teams, albeit had some talent, but they were usually fundamentally sound. Glymph was somewhat of a pioneer with the Player Development coaching slot that he was given when he was hired by the Portland Trailblazers in 1996. It was the same year when the 'Blazers drafted a high school kid, Jermaine O'Neal, from Eau Claire HS. Glymph was given the position as Portland's management felt Glymph could help O'Neal with his transition to the NBA.

I recently heard Glymph mention how Alton Lister, who (at the time) had been in the NBA for 16 years, once saw him doing a footwork drill with O'Neal, and wanted to know "what was Glymph doing." Lister asked did Glymph did he do those drills while coaching in HS, and Glymph replied that all of his players went through the same drills while he was coaching. Lister eventually got in on those drills.

Speaking about Glymph brings to me to this.... Some folks just have the "it" factor, regardless where you put 'em. I have a feeling Allocco will have a good grasp on things, if he ends up getting the job. If you know the game, then you know the game. Some folks also are forgetting that we have a coach, and his name is Steve Lavin. It seems like some posters believe we need a head coach when, in actuality, we already have one. I'm sure Lavin has input on what we'll be implementing. Allocco will just enhance it. Not to mention, he'll probably help us with high schooler's out in Cali.

Allocco wasn't my first (or, even second choice), but I don't have a problem, if he lands the job with our Johnnies. I'm sure Lavin views him being able to bring plenty to the table. I'm guessing it also won't hurt with us with the Pitts kid, either. ;)

So Allocco never coached college, neither did Lou Carnesecca before he joined Lapchick's staff. That's how you get college experience. Lavin knows who and what he needs for his talented athletes.

Did Carnesecca join Lapchick staff as top assistant or did he work his way up?

I think part of trusting our Coach is to allow him to pick his assistants and anything else he thinks he needs to make us as competitive as possible. As far as I am concerned he has done a knockout job since taking over as our head coach. If he thinks Alloco is the man to do the job then I hope he gets his man.

The fact that Lavin tried getting him before Dunlap says alot. I'm gonna trust coaches judgement on this one

I think Allocco will work wonders for Pointer's halfcourt game.

Not saying that Dom will ever be a consistent scoring threat. But sound fundamentals will definitely make him more than just a defensive stopper.

Dom had a decent offensive game coming out of QE.

Seems like he wasn't confident at all as a freshman in the halfcourt offense.
