Frank Allocco - De La Salle High CA

My only issue is how the players would react or relate to him. It's one thing to have Dunlap in your grill, he's been a coach on the highest levels (NBA). He's got credentials that a 18 year old kid can't argue with. But Allocco only has success on the high school level.

But at the end of the day if the players know he cares and is helping them get better, it can work. There is no doubt based on the videos I've seen, he will stress fundamentals and can strategize.

if hurley wanted to leave st anthony's to come here...would we kill the choice?

allocco appears to be the west coast version.

I'm sorry, but this is not Bobby Hurley.

I don't think anyone really has a huge problem if he indeed is the choice. But most of us would have liked a guy with some sort of high-level experience.

I have no idea of the level of competition he was coaching against so although his record is incredible, it just leaves a question mark.

He seems like a great teacher. But he has no experience coaching some of these AAU divas that are in D-1 basketball right now. Easy to coach up a kid who's never had a following as opposed to a McDonald's AA who thinks the world of himself.

Dunlap was a no-nonsense guy. Cracked the whip. Didn't care who he pissed off. Played the bad cop to Lavin's good cop.

I hope this guy isn't just happy to be here.

And I hope I'm totally wrong about my impressions of him.

You're right, this isn't Bobby Hurley. But then again, no one is. But Allocco is a very good coach, especially with defense.

The competition varies up there, some years are better than others, but I know they play some of the tougher teams around in the non-conference portion of the schedule. They also go far every year, and play well against teams with superior talent, so he's doing something right.

As for coaching divas, it definitely seems like Lavin targets his kids carefully. We haven't had many divas yet. But I'm pretty confident that he'd know how to handle one. I personally don't want any diva kids here. I'd pass on the No. 1 player in the country if he acted like a jerk.

I agree and am hoping for the best.

Just concerned that if Lavin had to miss a game or two, would this guy be able to man the sidelines since he's never done it before. That's all.

I know very little about him and he'd be put into situations that his resume' clearly suggest he's never experienced before.

This job is not about just coming into some 500-seat arena. Could he stand the sidelines at MSG and lead a team if he had to.

It's a legitimate concern. Not sure why none of us should question it.

So do you think lavin has thought about that being a possibility? I trust coach knows what he is bringing in, and has confidence in that person if he was to miss a game. Who would you choose as coach dunlaps successor?

Not sure it's done yet but... Coach wanted him when he was hired and wasn't able to convince him to come back east. Allocco is great mind and someone of impeccable character

I like the hire of Frank Allocco as Lav has NY covered with other staff members. @ESPNAndyKatz

re: Frank---Class act, tremendous coach, KNOWS NY. Get him$$$

... calling west coaster, The Honorable cr green for his knowledge regarding Coach Allocco.

I am going to trust Lavin. I am sure we could all nitpick little things that haven't gone smoothly since his arrival, but the direction of the program has been exceptional since his arrival. My only question is will any local coaches feel snubbed by Lavin taking a west coast coach over them. I am sure coach has thought about this but I have no clue as to the answer.

Anybody know if there was any truth to that rumor that Dunlap hired Mo Hicks on his staff in Charlotte?
Haven't heard anything since that original tweet.

Allocco played football at ND (sport that is tough), he is Italian (nuff said) and by the clip and the looks of this guy he is a no nonsense type so no worries about any of that stuff IMHO.

It's definitely good for us that Cimmino likes Allocco. They coached against each other at one of the Jordan Classics.

Don't some of these quotes say it all? People question whether he could coach a game with Lavin out... Really? It's basketball! He's won almost 500 games, regardless of what level. He knows what it takes to win games and I have zero doubt that if Lavin covets him as our AHC, there is a big reason for it. Seems he very well respected in bball community just from the little I've read already.

I completely trust Lavin
Its a good move to get a guy who has coached 500 games in High School bring him up a level to help with X and O's.
The guy must know his stuff with that record.
I am glad we are not going for a big name

2013 #73 player in the country is 6'5 SG Elliot Pitts from De La Salle. We would be eligible to sign him since Allocco would be a coach and not a DOBO.

So that rule only applies to non-coaching staff? Didn't know that.

Yeah because teams were hiring video coordinators and towel/water boys and all these other glorified BS positions just to pick players. DOBO was where the line was drawn so you had to be among the 3 coaches. Also remember DOBO's can't actively recruit.

Makes sense, but it still allows you to add an assistant coach to your staff for a year or two just to get that prized recruit. Although I guess the feeling is you wouldn't give away a position as important as one of the three ACs.

It's better than no rule though.

I think the central question has to be if, God forbid, anything happened to Steve Lavin would this guy be considered
adequate to replace him giving us the continuity of the staff in place instead of forcing a complete turnover...ARRRRGH
My admittedly uninformed answer would have to be no at this point. I know it's a pretty mercenary way to look at it but we've built up something pretty good here and I'd hate to see it torn down. I would have thought one of the criteria for the new guy would be that he would be fit to step into the top job. Before I get killed here I'd just say we all know that coaches come and go for many reasons and planning ahead is a good idea. Especially for us. Just food for thought....

Sorry if I missed it, but is the Allocco appointment official yet? Or when is an appointment expected, if Allocco or another candidate? Thanks.

I doubt Allocco would get the job if something happened to Lavin, so don't worry. Hopefully you are a Danny Hurley fan, though.
