Frank Allocco - De La Salle High CA

When Lavin bumped into him last week he jokingly told Allocco that the job again was open, never thinking that Allocco was now open to seriously considering such a career change. Allocco, who was already scheduled to come East this past weekend to visit his parents, dined with Lavin Saturday night at New York hotspot Aurora. That's when interest really heated up.

Doesn't have the NBA experience that I think recruits look for, but no doubt this guy is impressive. Seems like a great mind.

A guy that knows basketball, knows basketball. He can help and Lavin can sell it. We have Rico on staff who has nba experience, and now with Dunlap in the NBA, there are ties there. This guy sounds like he really knows the game and is a great communicator. Lavin can bring in the talent. It was never Dunlap bringing in the talent. Kids want to know they can be developed, and Lavin's track record of sending kids to the NBA is proof of that.

I wish this coach had some NBA experience or even high level college experience.

But I can't deny from looking at those videos that he is an incredible teacher. He'll get the players more fundamentally sound. You need a guy like that to break old habits.

I'm not excited about this choice but I'm not mad either.

I'd still prefer Jim Boylen but this guy seems okay.

I'm torn.

Sounds like Lavin is going to get his master tactician. I think after 400-something wins in HS ball, he's ready to make a salary that will dwarf high school ball and earn his stripes at the next level. If Lavin covets this guy, there's a reason for it.

if hurley wanted to leave st anthony's to come here...would we kill the choice?

allocco appears to be the west coast version.

Lavin has really taken this program to entirely different level. You can feel the buzz being generated. I believe that we will be a top ten program within 5 years!

Im also a little concerned that he never was a college coach, but I trust Lavin on this one. I too, think we will be a top program in the future. Everytime I read the Cincy boards and they would say how much better then us they are,,I thaught that they will be better then us next year, but starting the year after, we are going to leave them in the dust.

I'm sorry, but this is not Bobby Hurley.

I don't think anyone really has a huge problem if he indeed is the choice. But most of us would have liked a guy with some sort of high-level experience.

I have no idea of the level of competition he was coaching against so although his record is incredible, it just leaves a question mark.

He seems like a great teacher. But he has no experience coaching some of these AAU divas that are in D-1 basketball right now. Easy to coach up a kid who's never had a following as opposed to a McDonald's AA who thinks the world of himself.

Dunlap was a no-nonsense guy. Cracked the whip. Didn't care who he pissed off. Played the bad cop to Lavin's good cop.

I hope this guy isn't just happy to be here.

And I hope I'm totally wrong about my impressions of him.

Generally, coaches who have been around the game for a long time are of the "no-nonsense" type. The old school mentality is embedded in them due to their age, and being around and involved with the game for a very, long time. Not to mention, the ones who have had some success. I'm talking from experience of being around those types.

There are a couple of other candidates that I personally have pegged ahead of Allocco, but I have a feeling he won't be a pushover. Allocco will also more than likely be of aide for the west coast kids.

Isnt Lavin the one with West Coast Ties? IMO, I think we need someone with NY ties.

Lavin does have west coast ties. It sure won't hurt having a long time, well-respected and connected guy like Allocco. We have two guys with NY ties in Chiles and Hicks.

Once again, NY isn't producing the same type of talent as it was several years ago. The talent they are producing we have gotten the best it has to offer (ie, Harkless and Obekpa). We're also be amongst the finalists for guys like McCullough and Whitehead in the '14 class. We'll get our share of talent in NY. I wanna continue to tap into the rich talent out in Cali and the west coast in general.

Do you know anything about this guy other than some you tube clips of his practices? Where are your impressions coming from?

That and the articles posted of him of his background and previous unwillingness to relocate.

Am I supposed to go on something else as if I've ever heard of him before?

How about we trust the judgment of a coach who has done nothing but do positive things for this program thus far? If Lavin wants him, I do. He isn't going to replace Dunlap with someone who he doesn't believe is an excellent candidate.
