Florida Gulf Coast

I keep searching for our breakout performance where we are clicking on all cylinders keeping our opponents 3 pt % below 35%

Only one team has shot over 35% from 3-point range against us.

Oh petty facts

While acknowledging the import of aggregate percentages, there is no getting around that the volume of unbelievably open threes allowed and made vs. Detroit, Murray St., and Baylor are a problem...whether they shot it at 30% or 40%. When you're giving up an average of double-digit 3s (as we did in those 3 games), the difference in the percentage clip made against us becomes negligible in comparison to the sheer volume made against us (within a reasonable percentage). Out of our zone, when assignments aren't tight and we are constantly scrambling to get to shooters that also contributes to our other big issue thus far, which is controlling the defensive backboard.

We were better in both areas against Holy Cross, and both will continue to get better. But there is little covering up - by way of percentage or otherwise - the way we defended the 3 and rebounded in Charleston.

They are going to get the shots off somehow. The percentages increase the closer you go. Maybe I'm nuts but I'd rather let them bomb away from 3. Whats the old saying? Live by the 3, die by the 3. I'm happy we learned that and don't take nearly as many as we used to.

Don't think we ever shot many 3s

Nice win against a team that I think will upset someone if they make it to tournament. Until we get Sanchez or Gift, Obepka needs to play more minutes he's devastating on defense. His offense game is more polished than I thought also. Him getting a quick two fouls in the first half definitly contributed to us falling behind the way we did. The team gets energy from his defensive play.

We cannot afford to lose Obepka on fouls, especially without Sanchez or G.G. We're small enough with only Sampson and company.

Felix was a better find than Jones IMO and it's not even close. He is very motivated and stays with his man defensively, he blocks shots, he is fast, he can jump up and get rebounds, he can shoot, he can dunk, he can handle the ball, etc. I'm not going to lie I thought he would be nothing special...boy am I happy to eat crow :) one heaping portion for me please.

The staff recruited Obekpa for at least a year. Probably saw him for much more than that because they were involved with one of his teammates in the prior year.

That means they saw Felix just as much. Heck, when I saw OSNA play, Felix clearly stood out on the court. Felix was even OSNA's leading scorer. And Felix was being heavily recruited by UConn.

Jones was out of state. Probably talked about by Harrison and Branch from seeing him in Texas and possibly word of mouth from Phil Greene. Also may have gotten wind from Harkless or Nate Blue while they were training at IMG getting ready for the Draft Combine. Jones recruitment looks like it was the perfect storm and one of the true benefits of having a national recruiting base.

Explain how Felix was a better find when the staff clearly saw more of him?

Pretty simple, Felix is the much better all around player and it's not really that close. Felix shoots better, blocks better (and like 4 inches shorter than Jones), defends better, handles better, rebounds better, etc. What are you seeing that makes you think Jones is better? Felix is way better than most people thought and Jones is ok not great.

Is this a joke? Balamou and Jones are 6 games into their collegiate career. Why don't we give them a half a season or better yet a full season before we declare them "ok not great".

I actually really like what I'm seeing from both players. They are athletic and aggressive out there. With the right coaching, they are going to be big time contributors for the team.

When you think about it we could have really used these two last year.

Jesus Christ here we go again...a mid major up 10-2 right away nailing every 3 as if they are Duke

Just one game can we dominate?

Please cut down on using Jesus' name; not necessary.

 You just used his name. Does it really hurt you that much? What if I say "Jeez....us"? ^5

I believe he means using his name in vain. At least that's how I took it.

It's people like you who make me so glad SJ is very secular now. Do you also want nuns to start teaching college courses and slap students with rulers? Yuck...it's 2012 guys.

For all those bitching and moaning about beating FGCU by only 11, how do you think CRGreen feels about UCLA losing to Cal Poly at the new Pauly? Kyle Anderson=1 point! All-American Tony Parker=0 points, 3 minutes. Good bye national ranking!

How many glad that Anderson did not commit to us??

#15 Michigan State struggled to win by three against Louisiana-Lafayette, while Illinois (who won the Maui) needed a last second 3-pointer to beat Gardner-Webb by one.

State is beset with a bunch of injuries I thought I saw.

Who did Illinois beat to win the Maui? That kind of surprised me seeing that.

They beat Southern Cal, Chaminade, and Butler. They didn't exactly go through muderer's row to win the Maui (although, I believe Butler will be okay), but they spanked (winning by an average of 23 points) every team they played on their way to win the Maui.

Yeah they did luck out with Chaminade and then Butler knocking off UNC.

While we're talking about national rankings noticed that UConn fell back out of the top 25. I suggest that they won't return, struggling with one bad team around a loss to a good mid major is bad enough (quinnipiac in 2OT, really?) but they were also losing to Stony Brook with 12 minutes to go before pulling away. However to give Joe3 some credit UConn will be exactly who many of us thought they would be, a team that struggles to get to .500 in BE play but DePaul is not, and look like the DePaul of the last how ever many years despite the two strong upper classmen. So UConn will likely be better than DePaul this year.
