“@Kieran_Lynch: "Kids that didn't get in are redshirting." Lavin. Elaborated that Lipscomb, Balamou redshirting. Jones up in the air. #sjubb”

Lipscomb?? Is 2014 recruiting that effed up?
Got back from the "game" and I use the word very liberally. This was a total waste of 40 minutes IMO. It appears Humboldt was missing its best players and we basically played a good high school-level team. Not a good game to prepare for a nationally ranked team. Karr was MIA again but then again, he had better competition in prep school.
Yes, Hoop can shoot the three and Gift scored around 24 points with the ball going inside a bit more. Hope it gets fed to Chris upon his return.
Mike Rice was at the game as was the Maven.
Small crowd to witness this embarrassing mismatch.
Sorry for the post here but some mod must have also been embarrassed by this game and locked the thread.
That is all one needs to know about how some felt after the buzzer.

Damned if they do damned if they don't. This same team lost to Cal by 23 a few nights ago. They did what they were supposed to do. Took care of business. What were you wanting from this game? I'm confused. Just seems to me you find something negative in anything positive.

I am not sure if you actually were at the game but the score is very misleading. The second half was mostly walk-ons and Hoop, Pointer and Marco. The first team----the team that will be tested big time on Friday gained zero from this game----zero! It is like Alabama preparing for a big SEC game by playing Fordham.
Bewteen the two games I have no idea of how good we are.
I am happy for our team and a win but this was not even close to competitive ball.

We probably didn't gain anything from the game, but then again the score isn't always indicative of what was or could be learned from the game.

You were ticked about the game from Saturday by saying it was too close, and now you're claiming they didn't gained anything from the game because it wasn't competitive ball. You can't have it both ways, '72.

Just relax, and allow the season the play out, man. The season is 4 months long.... Not one game; two games; one week; one month; two months. 4 months.

Let's enjoy it!

Dink, I was not upset with game being close against SFSTATE. I was upset because we downright sucked in offensive execution and on defense. The only player not familiar with our D and O was Jordan since he was in high school last year. The other guys that played all practiced last year and it appeared as if they forgot anything that should have been learned over the past season and in Europe. What I saw was low basketball IQ and poor execution.
I would rather we win by one after playing great ball than winning by 70 and leaving us still puzzled by the chemistry of our first six players.
Jakarr needed to play the entire 2nd half to get him untracked but I guess Lav decided him sitting watching walk-ons was more beneficial.

I don't know about this learned nothing stuff, but I will say that as a fan we have a long tradition of playing down to inferior competition in both good and bad years with both good and bad coaches. Cruising through a game and watching the players execute offense like it were practice might actually be beneficial but for my ulcer it was a nice break.

Sadly we are not the only team that does that. Par for the course more often than not.

I thought you were upset about Saturday's outcome. I stand corrected.

I understand your concern about the execution on Saturday, but I think a lot of it had to do with more tinkering than anything. Nevertheless, they should've executed better.

I probably would've played Sampson a few minutes in the second half, but he certainly wouldn't have played the entire 2nd half. He probably needed to sit and learn that he'll be planted on the bench if continues to take rushed and poor shots. Besides, no need to take a chance on a possible freak injury, either.

Jakarr picked up a quick 3rd foul and went to sit for GGift.
What if he came back and broke his leg? You would be saying how Lavin is crazy for playing a kid when team is up 50.
Give it a rest with Jakarr. He certainly knows how to ball and him "clicking" with the walk ons would not help much.

Thank you!! I was actually surprised that that Pointer and Hooper were still playing at the end of the game.

When you are winning by such a large margin, you sit all your good players period. You don't want to be that coach that has one of his starters get hurt goofing off on an dunk when you are winning by 50. This is true across all sports and it has been proven time and time again. Call it Karma, if you dont sit your starters when you are blowing out a team, someone will get hurt.

Word directly from Felix is that he is still recovering from his ankle injury and he said he isn't fully recovered so he may sit out this year.

PS. Lavin also decided the player that needed to get on track the most.....Sampson, did not need any minutes in the 2nd half. Karr learned nothing from this game and it could bite us down the road.

And if Karr had been put back in the game and gotten injured causing him to miss games you would have been all over Lavin for putting him back in the game.

Humboldt was missing six players including three starters who are injured and out for the season.

Not sure what "liquid" you drink but stick to water!
Stop with all this BS "he could get injured" crap! He could get injured in practice!
He sat because of foul trouble?? How moronic an observation when SJ was up by 50 points! Lord almighty, if he fouled out we may have won by only 30!
He was benched because of poor decision-making. You sit him down for a few and "instruct" him. Then put him in against a vastly inferior opponent and see if he got the message.
We will find out on Friday night since any way we slice it, last nights game was a non-event.

I did think it was strange, that Sampson was removed early in the 2nd half when he picked up his 3rd foul. He was clearly off his game and could have used a little more playing time. Obvioulsy foul trouble was not an issue last night

He was originally sat because he had three fouls, early in the second half, just like he would have been in a regular season game if the situation was the same (might have been different if we were struggling and down). He did not come back in or played sparingly afterwards because the coach felt he wanted to see other players, period.

Although I don't know for sure, I doubt that Kar's confidence is suffering now. He's had bad games before and bounced back.

And exactly what will you find out on Friday night? Will you be able to make a direct correlation that his lack of minutes on Monday night will have an affect on him Friday night if he shots well or not.

No matter who we played in our exhibition game, the opponent was not going to be as tough as what we will see come Friday night. What Friday night will provide us a glimpse of what kind of team we have at this moment in time. It is a big chance to hit the ground running and get everyone to take notice right off the back that St. John's is here and we aren't going back to where we were.

What we will find out Friday night

I think it would be a huge mistake to redshirt Christian Jones.

Jakarr does not have a high basketball IQ (nowhere near Sanchez) and he has a penchant for sulking and taking himself mentally out of games when he either struggles early on or picks up quick fouls.

Obekpa can't be counted on for offense.

Biggest reason to me is fouls. I suspect that there will be more than a couple of games this season that will be foul festivals. Depending upon how the game is called we see how quickly Jakarr can get in foul trouble and Obekpa's game is always on a fine line. A bad call or two and he's down. Regardless of that even under normal circumstances our biggest guy is 6'9" and the only guy on the team who looks like he's trying to establish himself as a physical presence is Gift. We need the bodies and 5 extra fouls from the 4/5 may be crucial this season. Wisconsin could be exactly the type of team where fouls factor in.

I dont think it would be a huge mistake, but it would be nice to have the fouls and have a kid that has some offensive skill. Sampson just has to realize that his ticket to the NBA will be punched by dominating down low and going from there.

Sampson?

The coaching staff are the ones who design the offensive sets and plays. If Jakarr is floating along the perimeter or parked in the corner, that's where the staff put him.

There's a reason why we are near the top of the NCAAs annually in worst % shots taken (long twos).

The kid is long and bouncy yet we have him tossing the ball around the perimeter.

I almost fell off my couch when Tarik said that we actually spend practice time passing the ball around the perimeter without dribbling. Seriously?

He went to sit after his 3rd foul because the foul was very foolish and lazy. After that you can see Lavin chewing his ear off and showing him set his body to defend.
I no it's not BS that "he can be injured" YES, he can get injured in practice or getting up off his bed. BUT, pulling him out in a 50+ game lead is just one way to eliminate his chance to get injured.

Why did you almost fall out of your chair? I knew exactly what Turner meant when he stated it.

The reason for doing it is for players to break the habit of dribbling or over-dribbling. They are trying to teach the team to make snap/quick passes, so the open man can be identified with an open look.

Swinging the ball.

It would be a huge mistake not to. There's no minutes for Jones and Lavin like to go 3 guards most of the time. Sanchez and God are seniors and who knows what happens with Sampson so it'll be nice to have a more developed Jones waiting in the wings

If they are not running set plays, there is plenty of flexibility and discretion for the players. For example, nobody is telling a particular player to take a shot at any given point.

Also, passing the ball without dribbling is a very common drill. I think I saw two or three skip passes all season, which is absurd considering the amount of zone defense we faced.
