Yes Scientific Mapp was the point guard. I can’t believe I forgot that name.
Older brother of Majestic who went to St. Ray's and UVa. Majestic was the better player but knee injuries in college and several surgeries curtailed his career. He currently teaches at the Knox School in St. James LI where he is also the Head Basketball coach.

Gary Saunders who played at Georgia Tech and then Seton Hall was a solid college player. I believe he was the next best player but I can’t remember much from back then.

Saw Bootsy on the bench in that game against Detroit in full warm up gear. Why didn't he play on that team?
Was barkley already red shirting that year?
Thornton graduated from JUCO in December of that particular season, and Fraschilla didn't want Thornton to waste a half a season, and only have him for 1 1/2 seasons. So, he redshirted Thornton, as he'd have two full seasons. Unfortunately, for Fraschilla's sake, he never had the chance to coach Thornton, and Bootsy (like basically most of the roster) became a treasure for Jarvis.

Barkley never redshirted. Barkley was spending a prep season at MCI (Maine Central Institute), and came in as a freshman the following season (1998-1999 season).
With Barkley not going to be academically eligible, Fran tried to steal Speedy Claxton, who had committed to Hofstra. To his credit, Claxton stuck to his commitment, but he would have made a big difference when Felipe was a senior. The documentary sort of skipped over his junior year, Fran's first year.
The documentary was really nostalgic and well done. One thing that seemed unfair is why, even when we are the higher seed, we still have to play, essentially, a road game. We were seven seed, Detroit, 10 seed, and we play in Chicago. With the Hardy - Kennedy team, we were sixth seed, Gonzaga an 11 seed, and we have to play in Denver, with a huge Gonzaga home crowd advantage.

Actually, Fraschilla's move to "steal" Claxton isn't related or tied to Erick Barkley (Barkley was actually supposed to be in the '97 class, but ended up in the '98 class after prepping an extra year) at all. Fraschilla wanted Claxton (wh was a '96 HS grad) because I sense he wasn't sold on Turner as the lead guard. We ended up with Collin Charles, who was actually (believe it or not) a top 100 player.

Always loved Felipe as a player and a person but after watching the doc about his life I have even more respect than ever for him. Except for not living up to the ridiculously high expectations put on him as a basketball player he has lived a very fulfilling and exemplary life. Far from being a bust one would be hard pressed to find a negative thing to say about him especially as a human being. World needs tons more people in it like Felipe Lopez.

Did the 2 Syracuse kids that went to Tollintine around the same time? Reese and Autry? Can’t remember if they were Lopez years or Sealy.

Great post Bamafan. As you and RedStormNC have said in different ways, Felipe makes many of us feel a little guilty about not doing more to make this world a better place. One of the best things you can say about someone imho.

Autry went to Syracuse. Reese went to UNC. They were both two years behind Sealy.

The St. Ray's backcourt though was off the charts with Kareem Reid and Charlton Clarke, who would end up playing for Cal at UMass.

They also had Gary Harris that went to Minnesota who had a good college career.
Eric Harris.

Going on just memory here, but did Claxton and Barkley play together at Christ the King ? Wasn't there a two year span between Barkley leaving CK and finally enrolling at SJU? Collin Charles was a Mahoney recruit, but played two years with Fran, then transferred.

Claxton and Barkley did play together at CTK. I'm rather certain Barkley was supposed to be in the '97 class, but reclassified to the '98 class.

You're correct in reference to Collin Charles being a Mahoney recruit (along with Postell). Charles actually played one season under Jarvis before transferring.

I think he averaged double digit assists as a high school senior. RMN would know more, but I don't think Canadian high schools had nearly the talent back then that they do now. Charles also played at what I think was the "it" basketball school back then, Eastern Commerce.

One last question. When did Fran recruit Chudney Gray?

What had gotten our hopes up with Colin Charles was his high school teammate C. Jamal Magliore. Thought we had a chance with him. Ended up going to Kentucky and had a 10+ year NBA career.

What I really enjoyed about the documentary is how Felipe, Zendon, Tariq and Ty turned out so well.

Our program has been in turmoil since Lou left. Think about it: Tyrone Grant played for 3 coaches in 4 years: Mahoney, Fran, Jarvis.

But despite the craziness, those dudes turned out to be really solid citizens.

Gray committed to Fraschilla when Fran was still at Manhattan. Fraschilla brought Gray with him when he made the move to St. John's.

I don't know the other two, but keep in touch with Zendon. HE's a good guy trying to carve out a career coaching now in the NBA G league. I wouldn't mind SJU finding a place for him here - we have a lot of solid guys who have played bball here, and we really have to do a better job of honoring our tradition. Our athletic department guys are really working hard at that.

Was Zendon on staff a few years ago? Maybe as dobo at one point?
