Felipe Lopez / ESPN 30 for 30

He's a nice guy and a very good basketball player. I have met him times through my son's godmother (her husband), who is very close with him. Was invited to a viewing party for the debut as well. Can't imagine there would be anything but good publicity for us, a long commercial so to speak. Let's go Johnnies.

I was lucky to sit next to his family up in Glens Falls twice. When I told them I was a St. John’s fan they brought him right over to meet me. Every single one of them was extremely nice.

Got to know Felipe during the three years we crossed when I was doing student work in athletic dept. Was so friendly and humble.
I recall how hard he practiced on his own. Always running laps while dribbling around lower level of Alumni Hall.

Really looking forward to this documentary.

You will thus identify with a training regimen the documentary covers.

Hopefully all of us "fans" will also be reminded that college players are basically kids who are deeply affected by the things said and written about them.

Actually, for us SJU fans, we've never quite seen contiguous footage of just how big Felipe was, and what a huge following he had from both the Dominican community and basketball fans in general. I was absolutely amazed to see this presented as it was, since back then I'm pretty sure I had never even seen footage of him play as a high schooler, no less the enormous following he had.

It would be interesting to hear from any of you who saw him play as a high schooler, or went to HS with him, etc.

I thought I was watching a young Michael Jordan when he was at Rice.

He could do everything and with such ease and grace.

I saw a handful of his games, mostly playoffs. It was quite a scene. His family was really loud, and people would be playing the drums. Plus as MainMan said, the ease and grace were amazing. He looked like a gazelle out there against high schoolers. St. Ray's definitely had the best way of stopping him. They might have beat him twice his senior year. Definitely once that I know of. Once he beat them in the playoffs though there was no way at all the PSAL champ was beating Rice for the fed.

In his era, Rice was near the bottom of the PSAL until he arrived. Dean Meminger did go there a generation before if I'm not mistaken?

Thanks your recollections

CHSAA Beast

Rice was a CHSAA powerhouse in the mid 1960s to at least the early 1970s. Dean Meminger and Charlie Yelverton played on the same great Rice team from around 1966-1968. My high school was in their league and they always destroyed us.

Seeing those lists reminded me of what a rich tradition Brother Rice had accumulated, as a CHSAA power. I didn't notice Billy Campion's name. He was a Rice grad who went on to play at Manhattan. He was on a team we played a few times at MSG.
