Extend Lavin - Yes or No?

In lieu of the "Fire Lavin!" thread--there’s virtually zero chance that is going to happen—the more pressing issue facing SJU is whether Lavin should be extended. With the new president coming in July 1, this will probably get settled soon one way or the other.

One of the main arguments in favor of extending Lavin is that he can’t recruit effectively without an extension. I believe he deserves to be stripped of that luxury, based on (a) his inability to make the NCAA Tourney this year, despite having a loaded roster and (b) his inexplicable decision to pass on the 2014 class -- while the Seton Halls, G’towns, Providences, Xaviers of the world were all hustling to bring in top-rated recruits. As Vaccaro at the NY Post put it:

“Lavin’s first four years certainly have earned him two more, to see if he has the goods to get this straightened out. But eight? Based on a smile and a promise? That’s absurd, and terrible business. Lavin has won the right to disassemble the disarray. Nothing else."

Put me in the “No” camp.

Color me surprised at that one....btw, there IS a thread that discusses whether to extend him or not. .

It's tough but he's got 2 years left which isn't bad and he's not a lame duck at this point. If we surprise next year, then we can address it then. As of now I think he has to do a better job earning it. I don't think he's earned it on the court.

Like I have said before, great recruiter - lousy bench coach. I say NO. Unless he can hire a great assistant to be bench coach, and actually listen to him.

IMO, St. John's would be foolish to extend his contract.

(a) His team underachieved all season
(b) A lot of his players are leaving, which is a very poor reflection on him
(c) Unless an unforeseen miracle happens, the 2014 recruiting class will be very underwhelming

If he wants a longer contract, go out and win this year

I feel very strongly about removing the coach immediately. Therefore, a contract extension is not a thought for me.

There are so, so many problems with Lavin. Even those who want him back are acknowledging that he's not really a good coach. We need to expect more.

The fact that he inexplicably ignored the 2014 recruiting class is, on it's own, grounds for removal. I don't know what he could have been thinking, except, positioning himself for an extention.

I am a supporter of Lavin but would not offer until ; the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes have performed at a high level. Perhaps an assistant or two need to be re-evaluated prior

It's business....if you deliver on mutual expectations, then you may get an extension. If not, we move on. The ball right now is still in Lavin's court. Finish the job!

And you know "The fact that he inexplicably ignored the 2014 recruiting class" how?

4 year extension added on to current contract. 1st year vests if we make the ncaa next year.

2nd yr vests if we land top 10 recruiting class for 2015

Heck, I should be asking you for proof that he DID recruit. Let's go over this again. With at least eighty to ninety of the top one hundred 2014 recruits unsigned, Lavin knew he would have 3 open scholarship (Sanchez, Gift, and Marco). Outside of Whitehead, no one seems to recall a 2014 recruit even taking a visit. So, either the almighty Steve Lavin is not the Super Recruiter everyone says he is, or he simply mailed it in on 2014 (probably to build leverage for a contract extension).

I understand the Lavin Kool Aid prevents some folks from seeing his coaching ineptitude, but this should be obvious..

Name the recruits we have had on campus for official visits this year.

Also, not for nothing fuschia, but a few days ago you mentioned that you supported coach because he treated all his players with dignity and respect. And first off I don't think being a "nice guy" or ethical is enough to keep his job. That should be the starting point.
But more importantly, I think Amir Garrett would disagree with your assessment of how he treats his players. Garett was pushed aside when we had no open scholarships and coach wanted to bring in Jordan.
That's the breaks in big time college athletics I guess you could say.
But then you can't give Lavin credit for being above the fray and supposedly doing things the right way.

No. Why do we have to get constant updates on where he is every day and who he is after. Should
have been doing recruiting for this fall last year.

I think he waits to see how the player's senior year shakes out before he offers and then only goes after the best prospects.

Most of the best prospects are long signed before their senior year starts.
