As one of the final homers standing, allow me to make one final plea to those of you that have made these boards very difficult to read with your constant negativity.

First, I am also unhappy with both the current situation and the recruiting results in 2014. Just because I don't choose to post about it over and over, doesn't mean I am not scared to death of our front court, team defense, and depth. I am also not happy that we are entering this pivotal season without a capable 6'7 to 6'9 PF. That is all on Lavin, and we simply should not be in this position. Nobody disagrees with that. However, there is nothing any of us can do between now and the end of the season to change the 2014 class or the makeup of the roster.

Next, the kids we do have on this roster chose St. John's and stuck with St. John's. They deserve our support. Harrison was suspended and was presumably contacted by numerous programs with better chances to win, but he decided to finish his career with St. John's. I know I won't ever forget that. It doesn't matter who is wrong or right about whatever topic come the end of the season, we all come here because we love St. John's basketball. The success of the program and the school should be #1 for all of us. This negativity needs to stop. It's not constructive anymore...it is completely destructive.

Third, we are 3-0 and if you are not hellbent on searching for negativity behind every door, the season offers plenty of hope. Defensively, the team is nowhere near where I would like them to be. Rebounding....it's going to be ugly all year. Depth will surely be a problem. But if someone would have told any of us in the depths of the despair that were the Norm Roberts years that the board would be falling apart because of disappointment over a 20-win season, and the biggest question mark was whether a 6'6 senior who was the #35 RSCI ranked recruit and a 6'10 junior center who was the #69 RSCI ranked recruit could be enough to hold down a thin front court for a back court that has three players ranked in the RSCI top 52 in their respective years....who wouldn't have taken that?

Finally, you can whine and moan about Lavin, the situation and the old days or you can choose to get behind a talented team that deserves a supportive fan base. Jordan and Harrison are two of the most exciting players we've ever had. Jordan's ceiling alone should be enough to quell the negativity. There is no telling how dominant that kid can be by March. Plus, those two kids bring it harder than anyone since the Postell teams. Also, when was the last time we had a center like what Obekpa is showing us thus far? The biggest question mark just went for 18, 8, and 6 yesterday. We might be 3-2 next week, but we haven't lost a single game yet. You'd think we were 0-3 already with the tone of this board. Lavin's teams, for better or worse, have played exponentially better come February. Even if we start slow, let's not run for the ledge right away.

Why do you and others continue to assume that venting our frustration over the coaching staff/state of the program and rooting like hell for the kids are mutually exclusive?

Spot on, Marillac!

I have concerns. I leave games feeling somewhat disappointed---even after a win. I just can't imagine coming on this board everyday to say the same negative things about a coach that has brought drastic improvements over where we were before he got here, albeit not as much as I would like. I could never come on this board and tear down players (as opposed to honest critiquing) because they are getting more minutes over a player that I like more. This place is getting ridiculous.

My only 100 percent expectation is that Otis will make his Lavin/halftime adjustments post in every game thread. It's annoying already, but my expectation is that it will increase in annoyance exponentially.

Agree, but how could Lavin not be an improvement over where we were?

Marillac, you are truly a great fan. I remember last year when even I gave up on the team after the DePaul loss, and you were probably the only one who said we could get back on the bubble. I can dig up the thread, you were defending the teams chances against literally every other poster. Sure enough we went on a crazy run and got back on the bubble and almost made it.

Your optimism is something that I share when it comes to this season. I think we have a chance at the tournament, and was arguing with posters about our chances before the season started. I think with our special backcourt and obekpa and also an improved pointer we can make a run at a tournament bid.

While I remain optimistic on the season, I come here and enjoy discussing the positive and negatives of the team we have seen in the first 3 games. While I think the pros include pointer playing well, Jordan having a much more consistent mid range j, DLo playing well, ball movement better, there have been negatives as well. These include, poor defense on 3s, poor rebounding, poor ball control at times, and I haven't been a fan of the rotation thus far.

For me, I am open to discussing all these things and enjoy doing so. I think some posters, because of the recent run of bad news with Thomas, Briscoe, etc. have put blinders on and have certainly seemed to focus on the bad things of this team rather then the good.

You can't blame some of the posters for being overly negative, but I agree it can get out of hand. It is a weird situation though for many, it's hard to support Lavin when you want him out at the same time. I am fully supporting Lavin and hope we can keep winning, but again discussing the weaknesses of this team isn't being overly negative.

Some posters are letting their frustrations about the recruiting trail leak into their posts about the season, which is annoying I agree. But for the most part a lot of posters are just giving their honest assessment of what's on the floor. Incredible posters like paultzman, desco, and SJUalum98 are great fans, but don't like what they see. I don't think they are negative for the sake of being negative, I think they are just reacting honestly and fairly to what they've seen on the floor. As always, some posters want the team to fail and have their own agendas, but please know pretty much everyone on here is whole heartedly rooting for this team to succeed. You aren't alone. Go Redmen!

One poster hates the coach because he "pushed" Amir out. C'mon, really? Some because Lavin hasn't shown enough respect for their HS coach buddies. Others because their favorite player doesn't get enough minutes. Others because, simply, they are miserable bastards. Look, we can all criticize a lot of things that Lavin does. We all unanimously agree that heis not a great X's and O's coach. But to regurgitate the same crap over and over again is tiring. It makes this board a miserable place to come to, rarher than a place to come and discuss St. John's basketball. Besides the repetitive posts, the worst thing is the personal attacks on the staff. I don't know any of these people and none of them has ever done anything to me. I have no reason to have personal animus against any of them. Same goes for the players and other posters.

Apparently LJSA did not noticed that "Lav" did In fact make adjustments during the half times of the FP and LIU games and those adjustments improved play during the second halves.

You choose Marillac to cry to when he criticizes our players more than anyone (see his love affair with JaKarr as an example, not to mention Sanchez and his addition by subtraction mantra).

Harrison I s one of my favorites ever and of course It would be great to see the team make the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament but realistically speaking, Lavin has been a colossal failure in all aspects of running the program and I have ZERO faith in him leading this team this season and any point after that. We lost a lot up front from last year and we have no replacements for them. His in game coaching as we all know is a disaster. I. Won't comment on the absent recruits for the future since the original post is just about this season but based on what we have seen the first three games plus Lavin's in game coaching (always puts SJU AT A DISADVANTAGE) plus our lack of size is the recipe for another mediocre season where we will hover around .500.

Btw I know it was only one game but after watching creighton beat Oklahoma on Wednesday, do you guys thinks we are better than them? To me that's a team that will put a clinic on when they play us because Lavin preaches undisciplined basketball and McDermott will coach circles around him.

At this point, in the League the following will be better than us:

Nova
Gt
Xavier
PC
Creighton

seton hall SJU and Marquette will be 6-8

DePaul and butler 9-10 and butler may surprise.

Bottom line is that while the league isn't the big east of old it's still competitive top to bottom and too many things have to break right for SJU which never happens for it to be a successful season

We have struggled already playing a very easy schedule so far what are we gonna do Wednesday when the opponent won't be so forgiving? Also Georgia in the consolation game will not be an automatic win either.

I think there's a better chance of us finishing in the bottom 4 instead of the top 4. Lack of size plus bad coaching will haunt us all year.

To maintain a fig leaf of staying on topic. my expectation is that Creighton will be much better than St. Johns. I watched the Oklahoma game as well. Creighton plays beautiful basketball. And the contrast between the way they play and the way we play is why I have such low expectations for this season, and for any future season under existing regime.

I really think we are better than we have showed thus far. I recall us playing terrible against some mid majors last year, and it discouraged us all. Then we came out and went toe to toe with the #2 team in the country and probably should have won.

I know, woulda, coulda, shoulda, but my point is I think we are gonna show up better than we have so far in the season on Wednesday.

You had a good post until the last sentence of this paragraph. It should read "Then we proceeded to massively underachieve, missed the NCAA Tournament and got blown out in the first round of the NIT by Robert Morris."

Basketball is often a game of habits and the "slow starts" or "flat play", which are the coach-speak for what should be called unmotivated starts, were indicative of failures when we played real teams. When you consistently don't come out ready to play, you can't just turn the light switch on and off all the time. We turned the switch on a couple of time last year, but with the 0-5 start, the overall weak effort in a must-win vs. Providence in the Big East Tourny and the total and complete no-show against Robert Morris, those bad habits built up against the "lower level competition" reared its head.

Regrettably I just don't see this team playing smart & executing well against better competition. Prove me wrong next week guys. Hopefully this opinion will not be viewed as heresy or treason by Marillac. :)

what "#2" team in the country are you referencing?

the same one that lost a round of 32 game to dayton which was basically a home game for them?

Very fair point Jack. But that speaks to SJU playing up and down to their competition, which is not a good thing and has become a trend for us. You end up making things more interesting against lesser teams than it should be (which is fine) and playing well but not getting over the hump against better teams (which is not). That was our season in a nutshell last year minus the month of February.

At some point if we want to be better than that (and what better time than with a group of seniors) we have to separate ourselves from this. I'd love to see SJU dictate SJU's play consistently, not the level of competition. That is how and where you build habits and discipline that help you turn close losses into wins against better teams. Hoping that starts Wednesday for this particular squad!

Uhh yea. What the fact that they got eliminated by a team that went to the elite 8 makes them bad all of the sudden? Lol, you guys can really spin anything into a bad loss. And you missed the point of my post. Just forget it

not spinning it into a bad loss, but lets be real they were not the second best team in college bb last year.

they were #2 when we played them in the beginning of the season but you have to take the early season rankings with a grain of salt.

so you can also say that if we went "toe to toe" with the #2 team in the country we also crapped the bed vs depaul penn state and robert morris amongst others; so we are a team who plays at the level of their competition which is a sign of inconsistency which is not good.
