As one of the final homers standing, allow me to make one final plea to those of you that have made these boards very difficult to read with your constant negativity.
First, I am also unhappy with both the current situation and the recruiting results in 2014. Just because I don't choose to post about it over and over, doesn't mean I am not scared to death of our front court, team defense, and depth. I am also not happy that we are entering this pivotal season without a capable 6'7 to 6'9 PF. That is all on Lavin, and we simply should not be in this position. Nobody disagrees with that. However, there is nothing any of us can do between now and the end of the season to change the 2014 class or the makeup of the roster.
Next, the kids we do have on this roster chose St. John's and stuck with St. John's. They deserve our support. Harrison was suspended and was presumably contacted by numerous programs with better chances to win, but he decided to finish his career with St. John's. I know I won't ever forget that. It doesn't matter who is wrong or right about whatever topic come the end of the season, we all come here because we love St. John's basketball. The success of the program and the school should be #1 for all of us. This negativity needs to stop. It's not constructive anymore...it is completely destructive.
Third, we are 3-0 and if you are not hellbent on searching for negativity behind every door, the season offers plenty of hope. Defensively, the team is nowhere near where I would like them to be. Rebounding....it's going to be ugly all year. Depth will surely be a problem. But if someone would have told any of us in the depths of the despair that were the Norm Roberts years that the board would be falling apart because of disappointment over a 20-win season, and the biggest question mark was whether a 6'6 senior who was the #35 RSCI ranked recruit and a 6'10 junior center who was the #69 RSCI ranked recruit could be enough to hold down a thin front court for a back court that has three players ranked in the RSCI top 52 in their respective years....who wouldn't have taken that?
Finally, you can whine and moan about Lavin, the situation and the old days or you can choose to get behind a talented team that deserves a supportive fan base. Jordan and Harrison are two of the most exciting players we've ever had. Jordan's ceiling alone should be enough to quell the negativity. There is no telling how dominant that kid can be by March. Plus, those two kids bring it harder than anyone since the Postell teams. Also, when was the last time we had a center like what Obekpa is showing us thus far? The biggest question mark just went for 18, 8, and 6 yesterday. We might be 3-2 next week, but we haven't lost a single game yet. You'd think we were 0-3 already with the tone of this board. Lavin's teams, for better or worse, have played exponentially better come February. Even if we start slow, let's not run for the ledge right away.
