I enjoyed being at the arena today.
It seems clear that this group is a work in progress and that the purpose of this game was to get minutes distribution and everyone some floor time. To that end it was a success because everyone (except Maker who was a DNP) played at least nine minutes and no one played more than 24 minutes. Also all twelve players who played scored. My sense is that at this point the defense is way ahead of the offense, but we have some players who will put up points for us but we also will win some games mostly by pure defensive will. Overall it was a good afternoon to start to become more familiar with this team.
Despite his lack of rebounding, I thought Vince showed off some good things today (soft touch around the basket and decent rim protection) and I have an increased belief that he can be a serviceable backup for Zuby. Luis showed off both the best of him and the worst of him. He is a unique talent, but has lapses that are maddening at times. In the end, I believe that Kadary will be our most important piece. If he ever developed a shot he would be a very good pro. However, on this level he has a very diverse and high level skillset and he will be a force for us. Personally I was happy to see Lefteris get some minutes and think he will be a really nice piece for us eventually.
Some negative things to note:
1) Except for Dunlap (2 for 3) and Scott (3 for 4) the three point shooting was non-existent (0 for 15).
2} Missing on 9 of 26 free throws is something that needs to be worked on before it costs us games. Specifically, I can't understand why Brady struggles from the line so much, but believe it can be corrected and that the coaches need to work on fixing that ASAP.
Looking forward to Fordham to keep monitoring our forward motion.
