(EXHIBITION) Michigan (MSG), Sat., Oct. 25, 7p, Big Ten+

Good points about KR . Only difference was KR was coming to SJ as a returning BE All Star with 4 full years of College Ball in his quiver .
Our 2 prized Soph Recruits have 1 year of College Ball experience .
KR had the experience and skill to adapt to a different role with Pitino and did it well .
True , he wasn’t lights out early but , was still nursing a injury sustained previously . He was not in game shape , as a result .
At year end , he was arguably our MVP . Refs neutered him in the Arkansas game . Tough .

I didn't see the game so I could be very naive in my comments, but reading the board and looking at the box score there seems to be some positives and negatives that are fine in a game that doesn't count for anything other than learning and finding flaws.

Losing is never a positive, but in a game that doesn't count, we lost by 2 in overtime to a legitimate top 10 team. That is easier to swallow considering that two of our top three guards (Ian and Sellers) combined for 2 points and were 0 for 5 from three. Also, while having a good game stat wise, Sanon was limited to 14 minutes of play because of foul problems. You have to think that if Joson wasn't in foul trouble and / or either Ian or Sellers played like you would expect then this is likely a win.

On the negative side, this team is shooting ugly out of the gate, and Ian and Sellers are not putting up numbers. For those two in particular does it have to do with learning curves or is this a sign of something more severe? Is the lack of a true PG going to be a downfall for this team? I sure hope not, but the first two exhibition games don't make me feel good about it.

Again, these are just exhibition games, and the coaches and players will learn a lot more from a 2-point loss to top 10 Michigan than they will from a blowout victory against the Harlem Globetrotters. Kudos to Rick for scheduling these two games to hopefully go a long way to fixing the issues sooner than later.

I liked the way darling battled. Seems like a good kid

I just echo the sentiment some others have mentioned, perfect energy guy off the bench, but the minutes he was asked to play tonight? It’s far too much. Will be interesting to see how the backcourt minutes get handled this season, it’s the big question mark we have. Because the front court is locked and loaded with Zuby, Hopkins, Mitchell and Prey.
Unfortunately for us college games are won by their backcourt.

70/30 SJU at worst.

Their Lets Go Blue didn’t come out clearly until very end.

Michigan fans are like Gtown to me. They just show up. They don’t get too loud
Yea I’d say 80/20 or 70/30 worst.

What was hilarious was the first time I heard a Let’s Go Blue in any loud way, it was OT when they went up 8. Then it quickly stopped because lefty drilled a 3, and then hit another lol.

Let Sellers play off the ball where he belongs and utilize his strength, perimeter shooting. He also will struggle guarding swift PGs imo.

Jackson’s is imo one those guys we tend out of gate to anoint an elite player. He was very up and down at Carolina and is adapting to a more systematic approach under RP at both ends of the court.

I suspect Rick bought into him being a difference maker out of gate and likely recruited him w the PG lure. I hear once he got to know his game in practice and workouts, he realized he was strictly an off the ball guy w work to do. In that context Ian has to make shots. He runs court well and can score on breaks, but any off guard on this team better be able to hit jumpers. He needs to evidence that sooner or later or lose time.

Marillac astutely pointed out Hopkins was driving w head down into traffic a lot. If our perimeter guys hit shots that will open things for interior guys. I believe Sellers and Sanon can do that well and hopefully Ian shows he can.

Excited about this group & expect we may take a few hits in tough OOC games, but Pitino will enter conference play w right combinations. The irony could be we will have a less stellar coverall record, but finish well in BE play and have momentum to finish the Dance much better than in 2025.
One comment on Sanon as a 3 point shooter; looked game by game last year for him because straight up season %’s can be misleading. Anyway, he had 5 or 6 really good games shooting 3’s, one or two against less than quality opponents but shot about 25% in the rest of the games. He strikes me more as a scorer than a shooter, which is certainly not horrible.
I ignore Marillac, but his comment you shared on Hopkins is so on the money in general, but specifically how Eijofor didn’t get the ball on the last regulation possession was horrible IMO. Situation begged for a time out and that setup but didn’t happen obviously.

He had a bad (shoulder? Someone correct me if I’m wrong) injury right before conference play. There is a large difference in his percentages before and after.

I wasn’t at the game nor , did I watch . But , if you read our voluminous posts on this game like a Newspaper , you get the idea of what happened.

First , this wasn’t a Exhibition game , It was . in name only . It was a early clash between 2 alleged top 10teams . Not meaningless at all .

Saying it doesn’t count or matter is ridiculous .

The Game was on our Home Court , MSG , the Mecca of College BB. As such , home court advantage usually counts for up to 4 points .
It didn’t help us win .

The posts on the Guard play should cause serious concern from the fan base . Most , if not all accounts saw it as horrific .
Which leads to a question on Recruiting . Why didn’t Pitino , etc go all in on getting , either Lee or Boogie , at any price ? True point guards of a high caliber .
Missing out on 1 or the other, is a bad miss . Excuses not necessary .

Our shooting ? From 3 points , if it continues will lose us more games than we want . What was it ? 4-27 ?
That’s 12 points in a OT game . If we shot 7-27 we win this game easy
Maybe getting rid of Wilcher and Brady , for spot up shooting wasn’t a good decision .
Wilcher , playing in his 3 rd season under Rick , could not possibly be as bad as the group last night .

From all accounts , the vaunted Pitino press was totally ineffective all game .

I was wondering why there was no mention in all these posts , of Hopkins or Zuby down the stretch of the game contributing important baskets ?
Did they not get the Ball enough ? Were our guards incapable of getting them the ball ?

Lastly , a overwhelming number of posters , at the game or watching at home , were screaming their heads off for Pitino to take the Press off .
Apparently , he didn’t .

As I said , at the beginning , this Game was a Exhibition game in name only .
Tossing it off as such is a error . A 2 point loss to another powerhouse team , is still a loss , whether it be October or March .
And , anyone thinking these 2 Coaches , didn’t want to win this game is mistaken .

I’m just editing info from the posts from the site and , putting them all into Context to summarize the game as seen by those who watched .
I have to agree w you regarding the pg. Ideally Darling would be a very nice back up. He now looks like the starter and no one at this time looks like a good back up. To put in context this applies if you are looking for a final four run.

I was in 107 too, Row 19! Maybe you were one of the ones I was hearing or maybe you were hearing me too:):)!!
I am in 107 also row 20, these seats are horrible compared to my seats in Row 13 last year! When I made my pick I had no idea that the row 20 seats are horribly cramped to the point that I am going to see if I can move! My knees were up against the seat in front and the seats were a lot narrower!

No reason to be upset, I frankly prefer to lose so Rick & the team feel more motivated to clean things up. I’m very excited for the defensive potential of this team.

I really hope tonight was a shooting aberration & they shoot more.

Not convinced Darling is a 20 minute big east guy. Especially on defense. We desperately need a guy to step up as that primary ball handler
I would give Lefty the opportunity

If RP's complaints about guards not rebounding are directed in any way at Ian he's just going to put himself in an early grave stressing over it. Don't think Ian has it in him. Sanon should absolutely be able to grab us some boards though.
