Lavin said in interviews yesterday that he's going on a recruiting trip Thursday. Maybe he understands that this was going to be a tough year anyway so he's putting his energy into recruiting the 5 or 6 players he wants to bring in for next year. I don't know, I'm not tied into the program like some others on this board but I hope that's what he's doing. If that's the case, this might be a blessing in disguise. These players really miss his intensity and motivation on the sidelines during these games.

Aren't there contact periods for coaches as far as when they can and can not contact and speak to recruits? Maybe this is the contact period so he taking advantage of it and he will return to the sidelines after the contact period is over? Just guessing.

I was just about to write the same thing. I believe he sees how important it is to build on last years class and with no LOI's signed for next year and only one verbal who has maintained his commitment (Wood) he must believe he is of more value to the program out recruiting at this time. Because, believe me, I travel every week for work and getting on a plane 2+ times per week does not build strength!

Look I love coach Lavin and believe him when he says he cannot coach games or do full practice sessions right now but if the posters with the opinion that he is basically writing off this season and thinks recruiting is more impt are right-is this really fair to the kids currently playing this season and for that matter the fans too. As I said I believe in coach and what he says so to me it is a hypothetical question but am just curious if the other opinion were true what are peoples opinion about that.

It's a good question Bama. I feel like our fans have been avoiding this question for a month now. Everyone is quick to say "don't question coach's health decisions", but if he could be doing one or the other, and is choosing to recruit instead of actively coach?

I do think there's a problem with that. He made a commitment to the guys on this team and the University as a whole. There are no GM's in college basketball. If he can coach, he should be.

But, with that said, I don't doubt what he's telling us. If he says he can't coach right now, I'm sure he can't. So I have no problem with him recruiting if he feels that is what he is physically capable of doing right now.

Do people really think that if Lavin was on the sidelines for the majority of these games that they would've won?? It's not like the coaching staff can't handle these guys. These guys are playing with their heart on their sleeves, its just an insurmountable hill most nights that they have to climb no matter who their head coach is. They are going to win some and lose some this year whether or not Lav is on the sidelines. Its not like these players are all seniors and they leave after this year, they have 3 years ahead of them (for most). I'd rather him get us the players we need to compete next year and so on, then have him on the sidelines and us still losing games, yet not having any players of worth come in next year. the last few comments on this thread are just pure ignorant....

It's ignorant to think that when he's healthy enough our Head Coach should be on the sidelines coaching?
If he's not up to it, so be it. But your line of thinking; that if he can do one or the other, Lav should spend his time out recruiting, is asinine.

When a coach is hired in a rebuilding situation sure it may be more beneficial to be out recruiting than attending games, but they never actually chose to do that. You are the head coach, the most prominent figure in the program, and sometimes the entire university. Your job first and foremost is to be on the sidelines during games.
And no, I don't think we would win any more with Lavin on the sideline, but that's entirely beside the point. If he's able, he should coach.

With all of that said however, I stand by what I've been saying all along; I believe what coach is telling us, and when he's able to he will return to the sidelines. Not make the ridiculous decision to continue recruiting and not attend games, like some have asserted he is doing/ will do.

Again I believe what coach is telling us. As to my hypothetical question and your viewpoints-Coach was hired as a head coach and head coaches coach their team during games-they may have assistants out on the recruiting trail during games. If this is a legitimate strategy to be out recruiting during games why aren't any other coaches doing it. The current players signed up to play for Lavin not Dunlop so if you are refering to my post and the succeding post as ignorant I propose that you check yourself pal.

If the administration and players don't have a problem with it, why should you?? Obviously they know what's best for the program, not you guys....I'll stick with whatever they feel is best. If that is Lavin out on the recruiting trail whether healthy enough or not to coach, I'm down with that. Personally I watch the games for the players on the court, not the coach on the sidelines. So if he is out getting better players, yeah I like that. This year is rebuilding, deal with it. I love watching these kids playing hard and til the last second every night. If I'm a recruit and I see Steve Lavin watching me in some high school gym, and some assistant from another team watching me (who you probably wouldnt recognize) ummmm i'd remember lav. wutev, to each his own

It has been reported that coaching has a more debilitating effect than recruiting. Keep in mind, he could just have easily elected to sit the year out and do nothing. He is doing what he can -- and frankly what is most valuable to the long term prospects of the team.
