Ed Pinckney and Mitch Richmond joining staff?

As far as which assistant is next? Who cares?! We got one two of the best recruiters in the game. I'm more than satisfied with what we have already. The rest is gravy.

Home run post MCN! If NCAA passed a rule we could only have Chris, Slice & Matt I'm quite fine. :)

no offense to MR and EP, but I would much prefer a veteran ex-head coach sitting beside Chris while he learns the nuances of being a head coach

That would be Slice who spent 5 years as HC at Manhattan.

Based on his results there he either isn't a good X and O's guy or isn't a good recruiter. We all have been told he's an uber recruiter so . . .

My response was to the comment of having "a veteran ex-head coach sitting beside Chris while he learns the nuances of being a head coach", hence my response that Slice was an ex-head Coach. Hence he fit that criteria. X's and O's or recruiting prowess was not mentioned in the criteria nor my response.

Sorry, but in that case which nuances do we think the OP was referring to, serious question.

There is more to coaching than Xs and Os. He could have been talking about clock management, motivation, handling the refs. Slice has HC experience, why did it not go well at Manhattan for him, I don't know, nor do I know why it didn't work out formTorre and Belichelk both of whom had losing records prior to becoming the Skipper and HC of the Yankees and the Patriots respectively.

I am in agreement with DJRamps.

That's one of the great things about Mullin. He isn't going to leave SJU for another college coaching job. I think he will be w us for a long time. I'll say one thing about this staff. They are not leaving a stone unturned recruiting wise.

Agreed, either it's that or he hates college coaching and returns to the NBA after a few years.

Mullin is such a great family guy with strong relationship with his siblings, that I think being back in NYC is just a great thing for him. He said his biggest decision to move here was how it would affect his wife and kids. If he has success here, and I believe he will, he will be here till he retires 15 - 20 years from now.

Oft repeated but Frank McGuire once said something along the lines of, "You coach and I'll get the players, and I'll beat you every time." Jimmies and Joes before X's and O's.

On the topic of game experience, John Wooden often said that most of coaching occurs in practice. He maintained that timeouts "are a sign of weakness".

If you follow the Wooden theorem, there may be no one better suited to run a practice than Mullin.

Having an experienced coach next to him on the bench may be more for our comfort than his.

Besides maybe you, no one on this board is more confident than me that Chris is the right man for the job and will be highly successful here. I couldn't be more excited. However Chris has never coached at any level and his first HC job is at the highest level of college basketball. I could be wrong, but I expect there will be a bit of a learning curve for him, mostly with having to make snap in-game decisions(example of a nuance). IMO having someone next to him who has been through the wars before as a HC could prove to invaluable, especially early on in his tenure as HC

You could be right about that, and you are of course correct that his ability to game coach is unproven. I sense in how Mullin has approached taking the reigns that if he has the slightest doubt that he needs help in this regard then he will go out and make a hire like that. One thing that I wasn't sure of was whether he has the personna to lead - but he's erased those doubts pretty quickly.

Goes without saying, Mark that you are a terrific Johnnies fan.

I hope two or three years from now Chris and his staff are rolling along and Williams/NC , Boeheim/Syr , Pitino/Lou and CoachK/Duke are all contemplating retirement or at least their age will be a negative in the recruiting wars.

Been discussing this with a bunch of big college sports fans I know. Mullin is coming in at the perfect time to become the next generation of elite coach when those guys all ride off into the sunset (if he doesn't do it before they ride off).

Not that he cant join their ranks now but the effect will be that much more dramatic when they are gone.

As far as which assistant is next? Who cares?! We got one two of the best recruiters in the game. I'm more than satisfied with what we have already. The rest is gravy.

Home run post MCN! If NCAA passed a rule we could only have Chris, Slice & Matt I'm quite fine. :)

True Dat as Choz would say. But personally I think it would be pretty cool if we were the only college team in the country with 2 Basketball Hall of Fame players on the staff :)

It would be even cooler if we had a couple of future HOF players on our roster :)

It's important who we round out the staff with. Especially for a first time head coach. I'm thrilled we got Sima but that doesn't mean I don't also want Diallo. We've got the makings of a great staff but need to complement the recruiters with more game coaching experience.

Agree Russ, I simply don't get the "lets be happy with what we got" mentality of some of the posters here. It'll be those same posters who, the first time Chris gets out-coached in a game(and it will happen), will question why he didn't hire an x an o asst.

Have any of you ever watched Chris play? Did you ever see a situation you thought he was confused? Did they not say he was like having a coach on the floor? I really do not think game coaching and x and o s will be his problem. I he has one it will be he takes some things for granted that he thinks the kid should know and they don't or have not absorbed it. If he can teach and communicate to the kids in ways they can absorb, the in-game will be fine.

Not only did I watch Chris play, I attended St. Johns with Chris and saw almost every single home game that he played in. He has no bigger fan than me. Having said that, there's a HUGE difference between being a coach on the floor, and actually being a HC. I don't see the downside to having someone with HC experience sitting next to Chris early on in his tenure. I think that's the smart and safe move, we'll see what Chris decides.

Got good recruiters, good Offensive minded HC. Need defensive minded AC-Ron Artest maybe.

Ugh, I'm going to pray you were just kidding with the Artest suggestion.

Whats Bobby Cremins doing nowadays???LOL

We could have used him this past season. I remember Cremins never using his bench, so he would have been right at home here.

I wonder how close Mullins is to Don Nelson these days, maybe hire him as same position as Keady. I think Mullin will run the same offense as Nelsons. Mullin had his best years under Nelson.
Imagine 2 NBA player HOF'ers and a HOF'er as a coach. Sick.
Nelson would help him with everything that Mullin needs to know

Right. Like Lavin last year Cremins usually didn't have a bench which was by design. He liked to have 6 players but all very talented so playing time wouldn't be an issue.
