Ed Pinckney and Mitch Richmond joining staff?

no offense to MR and EP, but I would much prefer a veteran ex-head coach sitting beside Chris while he learns the nuances of being a head coach

Oft repeated but Frank McGuire once said something along the lines of, "You coach and I'll get the players, and I'll beat you every time." Jimmies and Joes before X's and O's.

On the topic of game experience, John Wooden often said that most of coaching occurs in practice. He maintained that timeouts "are a sign of weakness".

If you follow the Wooden theorem, there may be no one better suited to run a practice than Mullin.

Having an experienced coach next to him on the bench may be more for our comfort than his.

Bill Self and Roy Williams to name a few. Far from stars on the Xs and Os front. Both have won a title
Self has Norm to get things right.

coaching comes into play if 2 teams are equal in talent the moves a coach may make at critical times in a game will influence the outcome Common sense the more talented teams wins most of the time. Give me talent over coaching every time Also when teams are equal luck and calls come into play. Look coach has been around in BB for 30 yrs he is not going to have a problem coaching. All successful corp executives have bright mind under them that feed them info same god with coaching Many making too much of coaching experience

Exactly -- in-game bench coaching is overrated in today's college game. Mullin will do fine in that regard -- we need elite recruiters, and we're getting those.

Isn't that what cost our last coach his job? Or at least was a very strong contributing factor...

Ask Kentucky if having the better players always translates into wins. I think they are both about equal. You could be the greatest coach ever, but if you really just don't have the talent, you may struggle. And having all the talent in the world isn't the only thing. As a coach, you still need to be able to coach and manage that talent, which may not always be the easiest of things, which is why Cal won coach of the year.

St. Johns 2013-14 season tells otherwise

Even though I would love to have him Ed Pinckney is a reach. He's an NBA assistant coach who has interviewed for NBA head coaching jobs. Coming to a college program would be a step down. Slice has been named "Associate" head coach so Pinckney would be the second assistant on the staff? I do not see it happening. A big pay cut and a "status" cut would have to mean he is looking for a major lifestyle change or Mullin has some incriminating pictures of him. Richmond would seem to make more sense. What about Terrence?

My suspicion is, having missed out on his NBA HC targets, Pinckney is looking to become a college coach. My guess is after 2-3 years getting acclimated to the various aspects of the college game, he bolts for a university HC position and Mitch Richmond slides over from dobo into the asst coach spot.

Easy Ed would be getting re-acclimated to the various aspects of the college game as he was already served as an Assistant Coach at this level with Nova for four years before heading to the NBA as an Assistant.

In any event, don't look for him to be here too long if he comes. A guy that recently interviewed for NBA head coaching gigs isn't looking for a career as a college asst. Hopefully Mullin is a good X&Os coach (we'll soon know) and when Pinckney bolts, will have himself become acclimated enough to no longer need a great tactical guy beside him.

BTW, is there any basis for this rumor or are people just throwing names around? Haven't seen any media people "in the know" chime in online

We did have a great team last year w a lot of depth. Sanchez, Sampson et el. Roster management, psychological management and player development are important. We do need a big man coach.

That would be Slice who spent 5 years as HC at Manhattan.

Based on his results there he either isn't a good X and O's guy or isn't a good recruiter. We all have been told he's an uber recruiter so . . .

Holy Cow fellas, we need to stop with the talk that Coach Mullin needs a "x's and o's" guy with head coaching experience sitting next to him. Slice was a head coach and I am sure Matt A has a really good basketball IQ and you guys are selling Coach Mullin really short. He is going to be fine, yes there may be some early hiccups but that will happen with any new coach as he gets his footing. We are talking about a great player who all of his old coaches say he was the smartest player they ever coached. Can we put an end to all the chatter about the necessity of an ex HC sitting next to him because last time I checked Slice filled all that criteria.

My response was to the comment of having "a veteran ex-head coach sitting beside Chris while he learns the nuances of being a head coach", hence my response that Slice was an ex-head Coach. Hence he fit that criteria. X's and O's or recruiting prowess was not mentioned in the criteria nor my response.

When can we expect an announcement regarding Richmond if he is joining team Mullin?

Sorry, but in that case which nuances do we think the OP was referring to, serious question.

Thanks Dave. I suspect Chris will be fine.

That works for me. Get Ed working with Obekpa, Sima, Amar, Williams (and hopefully Diallo). Give us a good couple of years and then move on. Mitch moves up and could also potentially be a head coach somewhere (here?) one day.

Time for us to start developing not only our players but our assistants so that when Chris is ready to move on after restoring our program we will have someone good ready to take over.

Why are you saying Chris is going to move on? Look at Jay Wright, he turned down Kentucky and didn't even humor Texas with a conversation this year. Granted Jay didn't go to Villanova or play there the way Chris did at SJU, but Jay is at his dream job, he is committed to Villanova. How do you know Chris doesn't feel the same way? He might be in this for the long haul.

YOU DON'T MESS WITH HAPPY!

Whoa...I think you may be jumping the gun a little about starting to develop assistant coaches to take over. Mullin has been HC for 2 weeks!
