ESPN Insider had a story about Charlotte officially eliminating Dunlap and a number of others from contention for the Charlotte job and how that was a good thing for STJ. FWIW Charlotte's final 3 are Jerry Sloan, Brian Shaw and Quin Snyder (Huh ???).

If you're coaching Charlotte, are you really coaching an NBA team?

CHARLOTTE OBSERVER EXCLUSIVE: St. John’s assistant Mike Dunlap has been has accepted the head coach of the Charlotte #Bobcats. (cont.)

Hate losing him but congrats to coach Dunlap. He did a great job last year with an short roster. Very deserving of this opportunity.

Got to think Lavin had a plan for this just in case it happened. Curious to see what his move is.

Great for Coach Dunlap. Tough to lose him at this point though. Lavin will make the right hire I'm sure.

He might go after a similiar type of coach.... A no-nonsense guy who does well with the chalk in his hands. I'm sure we'll probably still use many of the same principles.

Wanted: X's and O's bench coach and disciplinarian who can play bad cop to Lav's good cop.

 Moe Hicks gets promoted

From DOBO to Associate HC? I think Hicks will stay where he is. Lavin will not just move all his assistants up. He'll want another X's and O's guru as his Associate HC methinks.

Agreed. Congrats to Coach Dunlap and much success to him.

Sorry to lose him but this will serve to show potential recruits the caliber of the staff that Coach Lavin brings in.

Hugh loss! He explained his coaching system of assigning points to each player to the press in Tampa and left them in awe.The "Professor" is going to get results in Charlotte.

I'm gonna miss Coach Dunlap. Brilliant mind.

But this is HUGE for recruiting. Simply HUGE.

An assistant college head coach getting an NBA head coaching job?

He beat out the likes of Jerry Sloan, Nate McMillan, Brian Shaw, Patrick Ewing.

I don't care how much negative feedback the Dunlap hire gets from NBA fans but for St. John's, this is huge!

Expect Lavin to levereage this just like he leveraged Moe declaring early.

St. John's has just taken a big leap in terms of perennial basketball powerhouses.

Freshman Rookie Of the Year..check
Freshman 1st round draft pick in the NBA..check
Assistant Head Coach leaps to the NBA..check

This will get many college coaches attention, trust me. And more importantly, recruits cannot even question the merits of the coaching staff.

Things are looking up in a big way!

Not with that current roster, he's not. NBA is about the players, much more so then the college game. He'll help, but don't look for immediate dividends. Plus, with Jordan running the show, I wonder if the Bobcats can ever be good.

I am 100% confidant in Lavin's ability to bring in someone of similar/equal ability to fill the void. I confess to not having a clue who that might be, but he will find someone. Mark my words.
