DR Game #1 - Dominican U22 National Team - 4 PM

Some of the (over)reactions would be comical if they weren't so typical. Today was a scrimmage and who coach wanted to play was up to him. There were pluses and minuses but two huge pluses were Posh & Soriano who figure to be 2 of our top 4 players. I'm still not 100% sold on Curbelo but time will tell.

Well said NC & I agree with your AC comment. Hopefully he shakes the rust off in due time and gets used to the new landscape.

My 2 cents

1) 1st game - so, as expected, lots to work on
2) A lot of alphas trying to assert themselves - leading to many forced shots - roles will need to be defined
3) Soriano has put in the work and looks much improved…high energy effort level (unfair to have him switching on perimeter)
4) Jones is a stud - but needs to find is niche (see #2) and avoid dribbling in traffic and settling for 3s
5) Storr is built like a man…not sure why the limited PT
6) King - aside from last 3 minutes, kid looked like anything but a freshman
7) Posh is Posh (we lose this game w/o him…and Soriano)
8) Curbelo - see #2
9) Nywie - have liked him from get go…
10) Stanley - does what it takes
11) Pinzon - like him and hoping for him to be 1 of top 7…but he will have to knock down open shots in order to get consistent time
12) Mathis - say what u want but he has settled into his role, has reduced 3s and plays hard

DR U22 looked like a good mid-major, just missing a post presence to be good high major

Perfect observation. This is a glorified scrimmage game. I wouldn’t read too much into anything. I didn’t see the game but my guess every healthy body played. The Coach tries to put some players in positions or situations they probably will not be asked to in the Regular season. There is like three months to work on things. I think this is a team bonding exercise, nothing more.

I didn’t get to watch the game or hear anything about it. So I read the game thread from start to finish without skipping ahead to see results. I must say. Thank you to all for commenting. Appreciate the insights to the scrimmage/game. Whatever you want to call it. And I also thank you for the comedy of the Jekyll and Hyde posts of how bad and how good we look.

So lucky that we “won” in the end because I can only imagine the fire coach posts would have followed.

Anyway. Thanks for the “entertaining” commentary to all!!!

Nothing too much to draw from imo. But it was good to see some guys step up. Will be a different guy every night, as far as supportive roles go.

A lot of guys are feeling their way out, give it time. Wusu isn’t even playing, Montez is about 70%, and guys are trying to impress rather than do what they have been doing.

I’m not gonna be too critical, just happy we have the games. Next game will be better now that we got that out of the way.

If Mathis is about 70% why is he playing in a meaningless game in august? I couldn’t tell anything was up with him physically

This is foolishness. Will play a huge role this season.
I was critical of 2 players; which did you mean or both? Regardless, what does playing a “huge role” on a mediocre team mean?

I’m judging these guys based on 1 game. Yes, extreme. But I’m being objective.

On the positive side:
Storr - really liked what I saw. Size, athleticism, couple of strong finishes. Bricked one 3 attempt early but pretty sure he can stroke

Posh - obviously 3 point shot looked better. I don’t think he’ll ever be a “good” 3 point shooter but he needs to be serviceable at 35%

Soriano - definitely moving better. Would’ve like to see him come up with some more loose balls and realize he doesnt need to try to dunk every attempt. Hoping he doesn’t fall in love with shooting jumpers but can live with wide-open shots

Stanley - this kid plays his tail off and seems to always impact positively. And-1 was not a pretty move but it went in… hey we’ll take it

Defensively, would like to see these guys fight through more screens. The switching drives me nuts when you can easily go under a screen on a non-shooter.
